It needs water, food that needs no cooking, first aid, essential medicines, a way to get weather alerts, light with spare batteries, sturdy clothing, and supplies for every person and pet in the household. The kit does not make floodwater safe. When flooding is imminent or a warning is issued, go to higher ground, and never drive or walk through floodwater.
What goes in the household kit
The list below draws on National Weather Service (NWS) offices in Tucson, Phoenix and Pittsburgh. Their checklists are undated pages, so treat the quantities as agency checklist figures and adjust them for your household and local guidance.

Water
- NWS Tucson says to keep three gallons of water in clean, closed containers for each person and pet (NWS Tucson, Monsoon Safety).
- NWS Pittsburgh’s flood checklist specifies a three-day supply at one gallon per person per day (NWS Pittsburgh, Floods).
The two figures differ, so the larger one is the safer target for a hot, dry monsoon region. In hot weather, or with pets and nursing or ill family members, plan for more.
Food
Stock food that needs no cooking or refrigeration. If you rely on canned goods, add a manual can opener (NWS Tucson).

First aid and medicine
Pack a first aid kit and any prescription or essential medication (NWS Tucson and NWS Pittsburgh). Keep enough of your regular medicines that you can take them with you if you leave quickly.
Alerts and light
- A NOAA Weather/All Hazards radio or another battery-operated radio, plus flashlights and extra batteries (NWS Tucson).
- NWS Phoenix also lists an AM/FM radio or a cell phone that can browse the web as ways to get weather information (NWS Phoenix, Monsoon Safety). A phone is useful, but power and communications outages are possible, so a battery radio is the backup.
Clothing and bedding
Keep sturdy or extra clothing. NWS Pittsburgh recommends a change of clothing and footwear and a blanket or sleeping bag for each person. Heat stays dangerous during monsoon conditions, so rain gear alone is not enough.

How to store and carry it
- Use sturdy, easy-to-carry containers so the kit can leave with the family.
- Keep important documents in a waterproof container.
- Keep a smaller disaster kit in the vehicle.
- If your home is flood-prone, plan evacuation routes and know where safe higher ground is (NWS Pittsburgh; NWS Albuquerque).
The practical difference between the two kits is portability. The household kit holds the full three days of supplies. The vehicle kit is a lighter version for being stranded or leaving fast.
Hazards the kit should anticipate
Monsoon season brings flash floods, lightning, strong winds, dust storms, wildfire, tornadoes and heat, along with possible power and communications outages (NWS Tucson, NWS Phoenix). If you spend time outdoors, NWS Flagstaff advises: “Pack a safety kit for use if there is a weather emergency.” Also know how alerts will reach you, locate shelter, and plan how to reach higher ground (NWS Flagstaff).

When to leave the kit behind
A kit is not a reason to wait. NWS Albuquerque states: “A Flood Warning means take action! A Flood Warning is issued when flooding is currently happening or about to happen” (NWS Albuquerque, Monsoon Awareness). A flash-flood warning signals life-threatening rapid flooding, so move to higher ground at once and do not go back for belongings. Do not drive or walk through floodwater, do not drive around barricades, and avoid washes and low-water crossings during heavy rain.
