What to Keep in a Home Emergency Kit for Severe Weather

A practical severe-weather home kit starts with several days of water and food, then adds communication, power, medical, accessibility and hazard-specific supplies.

Build a home emergency kit around FEMA’s several-day supply guidance, then adapt it to your local hazards and the needs of everyone in your household. Start with water, food, light, first aid, sanitation, communications and basic tools; add weather-specific and personal supplies. Keep the kit easy to reach, and make a smaller portable version if evacuation is possible.

Start with water, food and basic supplies

FEMA’s Basic Emergency Supply Kit checklist recommends one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation, and at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food. These are baseline guidance quantities, not a guarantee that every household will have enough. Scale them to household size, pets and individual circumstances; plan for a longer period if local conditions could leave you isolated. FEMA’s newer checklist uses the broader phrase “several days.” FEMA’s basic kit checklist and Ready.gov’s emergency supply guidance provide starting points.

  • Drinking water and non-perishable food that your household can use.
  • A manual can opener if your food supply includes canned goods.
  • A flashlight and spare batteries.
  • A first aid kit and a whistle for signaling for help.
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.
  • A dust mask, plastic sheeting and duct tape.
  • A wrench or pliers for utility shutoffs, plus local maps.

Only operate utility shutoffs when directed by utility or emergency officials. Keep supplies together in an accessible place, and make sure household members know where they are.

Plan for information and power outages

Include a battery-powered or hand-crank radio that can receive NOAA Weather Radio tone alerts, along with extra batteries. Keep phones charged when severe weather is expected and store an extra battery or charger. Pair radio access with local official alerts rather than relying on one information source. FEMA identifies portable chargers as useful outage supplies. Ready.gov’s kit guidance covers radios and charging supplies.

Add supplies for your household

A general checklist cannot account for every person’s needs. Add the items that household members rely on, and consider how they can be used during an outage or evacuation.
