But a Nintendo Life review published on August 24, 2026, reported serious bugs, crashes and performance problems on Switch 2. The game’s breadth is appealing; whether it is worth buying now depends on how much risk you are willing to accept around its technical condition, which the available sources do not establish for the current October 2026 build.
What you do on Starsand Island
Nintendo describes Starsand Island as a coastal life simulation built around farming, fishing, raising animals, customizing a home, exploring and meeting islanders. Its listing also advertises ruins, caverns, resources, combat and online cooperative play. Those are advertised features, not a guarantee of how smoothly every activity works on Switch 2. In her Switch 2 review, Michelle See-Tho of Nintendo Life describes five professions: Crafting, Farming, Fishing, Ranching and Exploration. Their appeal lies partly in how they feed into one another. Mining can provide ore for crafting, while ranching quests can provide rabbits that help protect crops. See-Tho says the game starts slowly, with its loop becoming more engaging as professions develop. She found the story basic and the characters interchangeable—subjective criticisms rather than specifications. Nintendo Life’s August 24, 2026 review
How the Switch 2 version performed in review
Nintendo Life published its European Switch 2 review on August 24, 2026, awarding the game 6/10. See-Tho praised the pleasant gameplay loop, the amount to do and helpful menus, but also reported stutter, slow or unresponsive selections, quest hand-in and persistence bugs, and loading screens that exceeded a minute. She said a boss respawned after she had collected its loot, and that the game crashed repeatedly: “And I lost count of how many times the game crashed – even post-patch.” The quotation and problems describe her review experience, not independently reproduced testing.
#1 Best Overall
- Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
- Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
- Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
- Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
- Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam
See-Tho noted that a patch arrived during her review session, but problems remained. The available sources do not establish whether later Switch 2 updates fixed these issues, so the August review should not be treated as a verified account of the October build. Her recommendation at publication was to wait for fixes or consider another platform if the art style and gameplay loop appealed; it is a dated recommendation, not a current patch assessment.
Who should consider buying it?
- Consider it if the interlocking professions and range of island activities are the main draw, and you can tolerate the possibility of bugs or delays while playing.
- Wait if crashes, lengthy loads or unreliable quest progress would make a long-term life sim frustrating. Check for recent Switch 2 patch information before purchasing; the cited review does not verify later fixes.
- Do not assume another platform is better. The available sources do not provide a current, same-build performance comparison across Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox.
