The dash VIN and the VIN on the driver-side door-area certification label should match character for character. The dash VIN identifies the vehicle; the certification label repeats it and adds manufacturing, weight-rating, and compliance information. A nearby tire-and-loading placard is a separate label with tire and load guidance, not a second certification label.
What the dash VIN tells you
A vehicle identification number (VIN) is a 17-character identifier under the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) guidance. A visible VIN is commonly located at the base of the windshield, on the dashboard. Placement and visibility can vary, so consult the owner’s manual if you cannot find it. NHTSA describes VINs and its lookup tool at VIN Decoder.

What the door jamb sticker tells you
The door-area label is generally called the certification label, certification tag, or federal compliance label. For most vehicles other than motorcycles and trailers, NHTSA describes its location as the hinge pillar, door latch post, or door edge next to the driver’s seating position. Exact placement and label design can vary by vehicle.
Under NHTSA’s summary of federal certification-label requirements, the label identifies the manufacturer and vehicle type, gives the month and year of manufacture, lists the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and gross axle weight ratings (GAWR), and includes the VIN. It also carries the manufacturer’s certification that the vehicle conforms to applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards in effect on its manufacture date. NHTSA describes the required information and wording in its Part 567 interpretation.

Certification label vs. tire-and-loading placard
These can be adjacent in the driver’s door opening, but they serve different purposes. The certification label identifies and certifies the vehicle; the tire-and-loading placard gives vehicle-specific seating, occupant-and-cargo capacity, tire-size, and cold-pressure information. A Toyota recall instruction hosted by NHTSA shows this distinction for a particular model-year example; it is not evidence that every vehicle uses the same layout. See the Toyota placard instructions.
Use the actual placard and owner’s manual for your vehicle’s tire pressures and loading limits. Do not substitute figures from another vehicle or generic online guidance.

How to check whether the two VINs match
- Locate the visible VIN at the base of the windshield and the VIN on the driver-side certification label. If either location is unclear, check the owner’s manual; locations vary by vehicle.
- Compare all 17 characters in order. Check carefully for easily confused characters and make sure no character was skipped. Avoid posting the complete VIN publicly.
- If you are checking a recall notice or vehicle paperwork, compare its VIN with the vehicle’s VIN too. In its specific recall instructions, Toyota tells recipients to verify that the notice VIN matches the vehicle before applying a replacement placard.
- If a VIN differs, do not guess which one is correct or rely on an online decoder as proof of the physical vehicle’s identity. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer and ask them to investigate.
- If the certification label is missing, damaged, or unreadable, contact the manufacturer. NHTSA also advises contacting the manufacturer about a missing label; do not buy or apply a generic replacement.
What an online VIN decoder can—and cannot—confirm
NHTSA’s decoder can return information encoded in a VIN, including plant and country in the documented workflow. NHTSA states on its VIN Decoder page: “The information displayed through the VIN decoder is reported by the manufacturer.” The lookup can help you interpret a VIN, but it does not replace checking the physical labels or resolve every question about a particular vehicle. NHTSA directs users with questions about the data to the manufacturer.

When to contact the manufacturer or dealer
- The dash VIN and certification-label VIN do not match.
- The certification label is missing, damaged, or cannot be read.
- A recall notice or document lists a VIN different from the vehicle’s physical VIN.
- You need help confirming vehicle-specific label placement or investigating an identity discrepancy.
The cited requirements and label-placement guidance concern U.S. vehicles. NHTSA’s material does not establish a population-wide rate for VIN mismatches, so a mismatch should be treated as a vehicle-specific issue rather than judged by an assumed frequency.
