With a box service, you try the delivered items and decide what to keep; an in-home styling appointment is a different format. Before signing up, check the styling fee, clothing prices, delivery schedule, return terms and service area.
How an online styling service works
The process varies by provider. Stitch Fix offers one example: clients create a style profile covering preferences, size and budget, are matched with a human stylist, and receive a curated Fix at home. Clients can also leave a request note for each shipment. These are Stitch Fix’s described features, not an industry-wide guarantee. Stitch Fix explains its process.

After trying the clothing, you decide what to keep and return the rest according to that provider’s rules. Stitch Fix says shipping and returns are free, but its cited support information does not establish a return deadline or every condition. Check the current instructions for your order before removing tags or sending items back.

Separate the styling fee from clothing prices
Stitch Fix lists a $20 styling fee per Fix after the first shipment and says the fee is credited toward items bought from that Fix. A credit toward a purchase does not make the clothing free: you pay for the items you keep, subject to the applicable prices and checkout terms. Check Stitch Fix’s current pricing information before placing an order.

Set a realistic clothing budget
Stitch Fix publishes approximate item-price ranges and lets clients choose price ranges by category. Those figures apply to that service and can change; they are not a standard price for online styling. Enter a budget you would actually spend and review the prices shown for the specific items before checkout.
Are deliveries recurring?
Stitch Fix says clients can choose scheduled deliveries or order a Fix when they want one, and that a subscription is not required. Do not assume another provider works the same way: check its delivery cadence, whether charges recur automatically, and how to pause or cancel before enrolling. Stitch Fix’s pricing page describes its available ordering choices.

How to compare styling services
Compare the actual service mechanics, not just the promise of personalized recommendations. These questions help reveal what you are paying for and what commitment comes with it.
- Format and convenience: Is clothing delivered for an at-home try-on, or is the service a remote consultation or an appointment in your home?
- Fees and commitment: Is there an upfront or per-session fee? Is it credited toward purchases? Are deliveries or charges recurring, and how can you pause or cancel?
- Clothing budget: What do items cost by category, and can you set limits that reflect your budget?
- Personalization: What does the intake ask about style, sizes and fit? Is a human stylist involved, and can you send requests or feedback?
- Returns: Who pays return shipping, what is the try-on window, and what conditions apply? Verify the current terms rather than inferring them from a free-shipping claim.
- Availability: Where does the provider deliver, or how far from a location does an in-person service operate?
How a box differs from an in-home appointment
Nordstrom to You illustrates a different option from a delivered clothing box. Nordstrom describes its in-home service as available within 15 miles of select locations. Its published fees are $50 for a one-hour styling appointment and $300 for a three-hour closet audit; the fee is covered by a Nordstrom gift card usable for Nordstrom purchases or alterations. This is a geographically limited service, not a nationwide online box. See Nordstrom’s service details and availability.
For a box, the main decision is whether the curated selection and try-on process suit you. For an appointment, consider whether the direct, in-home interaction is worth the fee and whether you are within the provider’s service area. Compare the fee’s use, clothing costs and return or follow-up terms before deciding.
