What to Evaluate Before Buying an Identity Security Add-On

A practical checklist for evaluating identity security add-ons against your identities, applications, security tools, licensing, and rollout needs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying an identity security add-on, check that it covers the identities and applications you actually use, detects risks through signals available in your environment, and can take actions your team is prepared to manage. Then verify MFA and recovery, licensing and integrations, and test policies in a limited, monitored rollout before enforcing them.

Start with the identities and access paths in scope

Write down which people, workloads, and applications the add-on is expected to protect. “Identity coverage” can mean different things across products, so ask vendors to map coverage to your environment rather than relying on a broad feature label.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • People: employees, contractors, customers, privileged users, and administrators, as applicable.
  • Non-human identities: service accounts, service principals, and other workloads that authenticate to applications or APIs.
  • Applications and access paths: cloud and on-premises apps, authentication flows, and any identity-provider tenants in scope.

This distinction matters operationally. Microsoft says Conditional Access policies scoped to users do not block calls made by service principals; its workload-identity policies address service principals. That is a Microsoft-specific example, so verify how each shortlisted product handles the non-human identities in your estate. Microsoft Entra ID Protection deployment guidance

Compare the signals it can use and the actions it can take

Ask vendors to trace each advertised detection from its source signal to the action, including supported identity types, prerequisites, audit trail, and known limitations. Confirm which signals are actually available through your identity provider, endpoint or security tools, and SIEM; a capability description does not establish that a product will detect a particular threat reliably in your environment.

#1 Best Overall

  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

Compare response options and how quickly they can be applied. Microsoft describes risk-based policies that can require MFA, block access, or require a secure password change. Okta describes ongoing assessment of user and session context, with responses that include an on-demand MFA challenge or session termination. These are vendor-described examples, not independent comparative findings; confirm availability for the proposed plan and tenant. Also establish who reviews alerts, investigates activity, approves exceptions, and responds when an automated action interrupts legitimate work. Logging and response features are useful only if your team can see, interpret, and act on them.

Assess MFA, enrollment, recovery, and user impact

Evaluate which MFA methods the add-on supports, how they fit the identity provider already in place, and what happens when a user loses a device or cannot complete enrollment. CISA says, “Businesses should aim to use a phishing-resistant MFA method,” and lists physical security keys among its strongest options. A FIDO security key is one physical option to compare, but check compatibility, enrollment support, and recovery arrangements before choosing a model. CISA: Require Multifactor Authentication

For context, Microsoft’s current Entra identity-security guidance, accessed in 2026, reports more than 600 million identity attacks daily. This is a Microsoft-reported figure, not an independently established industry-wide count. Microsoft identity infrastructure security operations checklist

Verify integrations, licensing, and operating requirements

List your identity provider and tenant or plan, current MFA methods, device and context sources, SIEM, and other security tools. Then ask the vendor to demonstrate the integrations you need and explain what data flows between systems, what actions can be triggered, and where the resulting audit records appear.

Confirm entitlements and commercial terms in the proposed bill of materials and contract: required license tiers or add-ons, prerequisites, minimum commitments, support level, data retention, and regional constraints. Microsoft’s deployment plan, for example, specifies an Entra ID P2 tenant or trial and notes that some detections require Microsoft 365 E5 or Enterprise Mobility + Security E5. These are Microsoft-specific requirements, not a general licensing rule for identity add-ons. Microsoft Entra ID Protection deployment plan

Pilot policies before enforcing them

  1. Map the baseline. Inventory identities, apps, authentication flows, privileged roles, service accounts, and service principals. Record existing risk reports, MFA enrollment, alert volume, false positives, and help-desk demand.
  2. Choose a limited test group. Start with a test user or small group and use report-only evaluation or the product’s equivalent monitoring mode before enforcement. Review existing alerts as Microsoft recommends. Microsoft Entra ID Protection deployment guidance
  3. Exercise recovery and exceptions. Test break-glass access, service-account behavior, user recovery, and incident response. Preserve an emergency-admin recovery path and decide how exceptions are approved and when they expire.
  4. Measure outcomes using your own pilot data. Track detection-to-action time, risky sessions blocked or challenged, false positives, enrollment completion, support tickets, and policy bypasses. Do not substitute vendor-wide performance claims for results from your environment.
  5. Assign ongoing ownership. Name owners for alert review, exception expiry, quarterly access review, and policy changes. Microsoft also describes exporting risk data to other tools and recommends ongoing monitoring. Microsoft Entra ID Protection deployment plan
