AI visibility is whether a brand or page appears in an AI-generated answer or AI-assisted search feature, sometimes with a link to the page. Traditional SEO focuses on helping pages be discovered and perform in organic search results. They are related, not competing disciplines: Google says established SEO best practices remain relevant to its AI Overviews and AI Mode.
What “AI visibility” means
AI visibility is a broad description of an outcome: a brand or page is surfaced in an AI-mediated discovery experience. Depending on the platform and report, that could mean a brand is mentioned in an answer, a page is linked as a supporting source, or the page receives a reported impression. These are different events, so the term does not name one standardized metric across platforms.

For Google Search, the documented AI experiences include AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says they may show relevant links and that its AI systems can use “query fan-out” to explore related searches and subtopics. That description applies to Google’s systems; it should not be assumed to explain how every AI assistant retrieves information. Google Search Central: AI features and your website

How AI visibility differs from traditional SEO
The distinction is chiefly the surface being observed and the outcome being measured—not a clean divide between two sets of optimization rules. Traditional SEO concerns a page’s discovery and performance in conventional organic search results. AI visibility asks whether and how the page or brand appears in a generated answer or AI search feature.
#1 Best Overall
| Question | Traditional SEO framing | AI visibility framing |
|---|---|---|
| What is observed? | Organic search result performance and page visibility. | A brand or page’s appearance in an AI response, including a linked source or reported impression. |
| Where does the user see it? | Conventional search results. | A generated response or AI search feature, sometimes with supporting links. |
| What does measurement show? | Search performance data and downstream site analytics. | Platform-specific exposure measures; for Google, Search Console reports impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode. |
| What does optimization involve? | Technical accessibility, relevance, useful content, and established SEO practices. | The same foundations, with attention to distinctive, helpful content and a clear site structure. |
Not every search triggers an AI Overview. Google says AI Overviews appear when its systems determine they add value, and its AI features are connected to core Search ranking and quality systems. Why SEO still matters for Google’s AI search features
Google’s guidance is explicit: “The best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Google Search (such as AI Overviews and AI Mode).” Its AI features can show supporting links to pages in Google’s Search index. To be eligible to appear with a Search snippet in these features, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet; eligibility does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving.

Google says no special schema.org structured data or new AI text file is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. The useful work is foundational: make pages crawlable, put important information in text, use internal links to help discovery, provide a good page experience, and ensure structured data matches visible page content. Create useful, reliable, people-first material with information that adds something beyond generic coverage. How to measure AI visibility without confusing it with business impact
Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report includes impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. It can be viewed by page, country, date, and device. Google says the report was rolled out to all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026. Its figures describe exposure, not necessarily a distinct person, a site visit, or a business result. - Define the event. Decide whether you mean a brand mention, a cited link, or a reported impression. Do not treat those labels as interchangeable.
- Keep exposure separate from action. An impression is not a click, visit, engagement, or conversion. Use site analytics and business outcomes alongside visibility measures.
- Read the report with its limits in mind. Google notes that normal Search performance report limitations apply, including a 1,000-row limit. Chart and table totals can differ because they aggregate data differently, and the newest chart data may be preliminary. Search Console Help: Generative AI performance report
Google published usage figures in its June 3, 2026 website-owner announcement, updated August 31, 2026: more than 2.5 billion monthly active users for AI Overviews and more than one billion monthly users for AI Mode. These are figures from Google, not independent estimates, and they describe product reach—not the likelihood that a particular page will be cited or the results a business will get. When you may want to limit Google’s generative AI use of your content
Google documents a Search generative AI control in Search Console that lets site owners include or exclude links and content from specified generative AI features. Excluded content will not appear or ground responses in those features; the control does not affect other parts of Search. Google says the control was rolled out to all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026. Search Console Help: Generative AI performance report

Third-party software may help teams track a defined set of prompts or appearances across answer engines, but no external tool has access to Google’s internal ranking or AI systems. Treat vendor metrics as that vendor’s measurement, not Google’s definitive visibility score. Google’s guidance also cautions against unnecessary AI text files, inauthentic mentions, and treating content “chunking” as a magic optimization. GEO or AEO advice should not be presented as a documented Google ranking factor unless Google establishes it. Google Search Central: AI features and your website
