When a hard Sudoku stops yielding obvious numbers, do not guess. First check for a recording error, then rescan the entire grid, complete candidate notes, and work through increasingly powerful eliminations: singles, pairs, box-line interactions, X-Wing, swordfish, and finally coloring or chains. After every placement or candidate removal, restart a whole-grid scan; the consequence of one small change may appear far from where you made it.
This methodical progression follows the technique order in xSudoku’s Sudoku-solving guide. It treats a difficult puzzle as a sequence of provable deductions rather than a test of intuition or luck.

Start by checking the grid, not by forcing a move
A puzzle can appear impossible because one digit was copied incorrectly, entered twice, or left in a place that conflicts with the rules. Before searching for an advanced pattern, reread the original givens and your filled digits. In every row, column, and 3×3 box, confirm that no digit appears twice. If you find a conflict, undo the most recent suspect entry and recalculate the affected candidates.

This check is a practical safeguard rather than a claim that every stall is caused by transcription. If the grid is valid, continue with a structured scan instead of making a speculative guess.

Use this recovery workflow in order
- Sweep the grid by digit. Take one digit at a time, from 1 through 9. In each 3×3 box where that digit is missing, use the occupied rows and columns to cross out impossible cells. Repeat the same inspection in the other boxes. A digit-by-digit sweep often reveals an opportunity that a casual cell-by-cell glance misses.
- Find naked and hidden singles. A naked single is an empty cell with only one legal candidate left. A hidden single is a digit that has only one possible location within a row, column, or box, even if that cell still contains several pencil marks. Place the digit only when the unit proves it, then restart the scan across the whole grid.
- Rescan after every placement. Do not continue from the square where you just wrote a number. That placement removes a candidate from its row, column, and box, and any of those changes can create a new single elsewhere. The guide specifically recommends returning to a full scan after each placement.
- Write complete candidates when singles stop. For every unsolved cell, list every digit that is still legal in its row, column, and box. Keep these notes current: whenever a digit is placed or eliminated, remove it from all peers. Incomplete or stale notes can hide the very pattern you are trying to find.
- Search for local groups and intersections. With accurate candidates, inspect naked pairs and triples, hidden pairs, pointing pairs, and box-line reduction. These methods usually remove candidates rather than fill a cell immediately. Treat each removal as progress, then scan again for a single or another deduction.
- Escalate to whole-grid patterns. If the simpler checks produce no result, examine one digit across all rows and columns for an X-Wing or swordfish. After that, consider coloring or chains. Advanced methods take longer to verify and are easier to misuse when a simpler elimination is still available.
- Request a reasoned hint if necessary. Ask for the next logical placement or elimination and the reason it is valid, rather than revealing the completed grid. A useful hint should let you continue solving and learn which candidate relationship you missed.
How candidate notes turn a stall into evidence
Naked pairs and triples
If two cells in one row, column, or box contain exactly the same two candidates, those two digits must occupy those two cells in some order. Remove both digits from every other cell in that unit. The same principle extends to three cells containing only the same three digits. The elimination may not place a number immediately; its value is that it can expose a later single or hidden pair.
Hidden pairs
Sometimes two digits appear as candidates in only the same two cells of a unit, while those cells also show other notes. Those two positions must contain the pair, so erase the extra candidates from the two cells. Check the entire unit before acting: the restriction is about where the digits can go, not about two cells that merely look similar.
Pointing pairs and box-line reduction
A pointing pair occurs when all remaining candidates for a digit inside a 3×3 box lie in one row or one column. Because that digit must be placed somewhere in the box, it cannot also appear elsewhere in that same row or column outside the box; remove those outside candidates. Box-line reduction is the reverse intersection: if a row or column confines a digit’s candidates to one box, remove that digit from other cells in the box. Recheck the notes after each elimination.

Recognize an X-Wing without guessing
An X-Wing is a candidate pattern for one specific digit. Choose a digit and list every cell where it remains possible. If two different rows each contain that digit in exactly two candidate cells, and both rows use the same two columns, the four positions form the corners of an X-Wing.
Why the elimination works: one of the two rows must place the digit in the first shared column and the other row must place it in the second, or the reverse. Therefore, no other cell in either shared column can contain that digit. Delete the candidate from those columns outside the two X-Wing rows. The same logic works with rows and columns exchanged: two columns can define the pattern and eliminate candidates from the corresponding rows.
Do not label every four-corner rectangle an X-Wing. For the chosen digit, each defining row (or column) must have the required two candidate positions, and the positions must align in the same two columns (or rows). Verify the notes before making an elimination. The elimination is valid even when it does not solve a cell immediately; continue scanning for what the reduced candidate sets create.

When to try swordfish, coloring, or chains
Swordfish
Swordfish extends the same candidate-interaction idea across three rows and three columns. Use it only after you have checked singles, local pairs, and intersections. The more positions involved, the more carefully you must verify that every candidate for the chosen digit is covered by the pattern before removing anything.

Coloring and chains follow linked candidate implications across the grid. They belong at the advanced end of the progression because they require more bookkeeping and can be misapplied when a simpler relationship remains. If you use one, write down the links and the conclusion each link supports; do not rely on a visual impression alone.
A puzzle marked “hard” or “expert” is not guaranteed to require a particular advanced technique. Those labels are not standardized by the guide, so let the current candidate structure determine the next method instead of assuming that every puzzle with the same rating has the same solution path.

Choose a technique by what it needs and what it produces
| Technique tier | What you inspect | Typical result |
|---|---|---|
| Scanning and singles | One cell or one row, column, or box at a time | Places a digit directly |
| Pairs and box-line reductions | Accurate candidates within a unit or at an intersection of units | Removes candidates from related cells |
| X-Wing and swordfish | Positions for one digit across several rows and columns | Removes that digit from other cells in the covered columns or rows |
| Coloring and chains | Linked implications that span multiple units | Produces an elimination or a forced placement after the links are proved |
This is a progression of solving requirements, not a ranking of products or apps. Begin with the least complicated method that fits the grid, because it is easier to audit and less likely to generate an invalid elimination.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do after an elimination
Crossing out a candidate is not a failed move just because no number appears at once. Candidate reduction can create a naked single, a hidden single, a pair, or another intersection several units away. Update every affected note, then run the whole-grid digit sweep again. If nothing follows, continue at the same tier before escalating.
Keep a clear distinction between a candidate removal and a placement. A removal needs a pattern that proves the digit cannot go there; a placement needs proof that the digit must go in that cell. Never convert “this seems likely” into a filled square.

Use hints without surrendering the solve
If you are using a solving app or asking another person, request the next logical step and its justification. A hint such as “place 7 in this cell” is much less useful than “7 is the only remaining candidate in this box because the other locations are blocked by these rows and columns.” Prefer one step at a time so that you can update the grid and see the resulting deduction yourself.
If a hint conflicts with your notes, stop and audit the grid. A missing candidate, an illegal duplicate, or a mistaken earlier placement can make a correct hint appear impossible.
Practice so the next hard puzzle is productive
Practice on puzzles that are slightly beyond your current comfort level. The goal is to encounter the technique you want to learn while the easier methods remain familiar enough to verify the setup. Keep full pencil marks on paper if that helps you see patterns; a pencil and a printed hard-Sudoku puzzle are optional aids, not requirements.

Because difficulty labels vary between publishers and apps, record the actual pattern you missed—such as a hidden pair or an X-Wing—rather than treating the label as a standardized measurement. Reviewing why an elimination was valid is more useful than memorizing a list of “hard” puzzles.
A compact checklist for your next stall
- Check the givens and filled digits for duplicates in every row, column, and 3×3 box.
- Sweep each digit through the boxes, rows, and columns.
- Place naked or hidden singles, then restart the whole-grid scan.
- Complete and maintain candidate notes.
- Check naked pairs or triples, hidden pairs, pointing pairs, and box-line reduction.
- Inspect each digit for an X-Wing, then a swordfish.
- Use coloring or chains only after simpler checks fail.
- After every placement or elimination, update notes and rescan.
- If you need help, ask for the next deduction and its reason, not only the final answer.
The technique sequence and the cautions about rescanning, candidate eliminations, X-Wing, swordfish, and chains are described in xSudoku’s solving-technique guide. It is a practical how-to resource rather than a formal difficulty standard or an independent study, so use its progression as a disciplined workflow, not as a promise that every puzzle follows one fixed script.
