AI can help a telecom operations team spot unusual network behavior earlier and narrow down where to investigate—but an anomaly is not proof of a fault, and a model’s proposed cause is not a confirmed root cause. A reliable workflow combines performance indicators with alarms, logs, topology and configuration context; detects deviations from an appropriate baseline; correlates related evidence; and lets engineers verify the diagnosis before changing a live network.
What AI monitoring does—and what it does not
Telecom network monitoring produces more measurements and events than an operator can conveniently review one by one. AI and statistical analytics can help sift that evidence for patterns that depart from expected behavior, identify relationships among events, and suggest which network element or condition deserves attention first.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
These are distinct tasks. Anomaly detection flags behavior that differs from a baseline or learned pattern. Correlation links related alarms, counters, logs or events, potentially across network domains. Root-cause analysis uses those relationships and operational context to narrow the likely cause. A system may support all three, but an unusual KPI alone does not establish that a fault exists, and a ranked cause remains a hypothesis until checked against evidence.
AI monitoring is therefore best treated as decision support embedded in a network-operations workflow, not as a model operating in isolation. The operator still needs to determine which service matters, provide data with enough context to interpret it, decide what constitutes a useful alert, and verify whether any response improves the intended service measure.

Build the monitoring workflow around an operational question
Before selecting algorithms or collecting every available data stream, define the problem in terms that a network team can act on. For example: which service or network domain is showing a performance degradation, what symptoms should trigger investigation, and how quickly must an operator be notified? A narrowly framed use case is easier to validate than a goal such as “use AI to improve the network.”
Choose a domain, service and symptom
Specify the part of the network in scope—such as radio access, transport, core, cloud infrastructure or a service spanning several of them—and identify the affected service or customer-facing symptom. Then choose a small initial set of relevant key performance indicators (KPIs) and service indicators. The appropriate measures depend on the use case; the reviewed sources do not establish a universal KPI set for every telecom network.
Write down what action an alert is expected to enable. An alert that cannot be tied to a decision—investigate a site, inspect a configuration change, check an upstream dependency or open an incident—may create more noise than value. Record the operational owner and the evidence they will need to decide what to do.

Define the distinction between a warning and a fault
Set separate meanings for a model output and an operational incident. A deviation can warrant review without meeting the operator’s criteria for a fault. Define which signals, thresholds, duration or corroborating evidence are required to escalate a warning, and who is authorized to confirm the incident. This separation helps prevent a dashboard’s anomaly label from being treated as a diagnosis.
Collect and align the evidence the use case needs
Analytics are only as useful as the observations and context available to interpret them. Depending on the network domain and question, inputs may include performance counters and KPIs, fault alarms, configuration-management data, logs, traces, topology, service signals and relevant infrastructure events. Not every use case needs every source, but a system that sees only a KPI may have little basis for distinguishing among several possible causes.
Start with relevant sources, not maximum volume
Map each selected measure to its producing network element or management system, its time interval, and the service or domain it describes. Add related alarms, logs or configuration information where those can help explain the symptom. Samsung describes using configuration, fault and performance-management data, while Jio describes RAN counters and logs alongside data from network functions and management systems. Nokia describes multi-domain network and service data. These are descriptions of vendor offerings, not independent evidence that any one input set is sufficient for a particular operator.

Include topology and configuration context when the task involves localization or dependency analysis. A performance change can coincide with a configuration change, an upstream event or a symptom in another domain. Without relationships among elements and services, an analytics system may detect that something changed while offering little guidance on where to look.
Check time, identity and data quality
Signals from different systems need identifiers and timestamps that let operators compare them. Establish how network elements, services and events are named across sources, and check whether timestamps and collection intervals are suitable for the intended analysis. A delay, gap or inconsistent identifier can make related events appear unrelated—or make a stale value look current.
Make data health visible alongside network health. Track missing and delayed telemetry, changes in source coverage, and whether a feed has stopped or changed format. Otherwise, a model may mistake a collection problem for a network anomaly or silently lose the evidence needed to support a diagnosis.
Establish baselines and detect deviations
A useful detector needs a way to distinguish expected variation from behavior worth investigating. That may involve statistical methods, machine-learning analytics or a combination. The baseline should correspond to the chosen network domain, service and symptom rather than assuming one pattern describes all equipment and operating conditions.
Vendor descriptions illustrate the range of claimed capabilities: Jio describes machine-learning anomaly alerts and KPI dashboards, while HCLTech describes anomaly detection and forecasting. Those pages describe product capabilities; they do not provide independently validated detection accuracy or operational outcomes. Treat model outputs as candidates for evaluation in the operator’s environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake an alert interpretable
For each alert, expose the measure that changed, the relevant time period, the affected element or service, and the evidence used to raise it. If the output is a score or ranking, explain what it represents in the system’s own terms; do not present a score as a probability of a confirmed fault unless that meaning has been established. The operator should be able to compare the alert with the underlying telemetry and related events.

Review alerts against known incidents and ordinary operational periods. The practical question is not only whether a detector finds unusual behavior, but whether the alerts arrive in time, are sufficiently specific to be useful, and can be triaged without overwhelming the team. No universal accuracy, cost-saving or downtime-reduction figure is established by the sources described here.
Account for the lack of failure examples
Serious production failures may be infrequent, leaving too few labeled examples to train or evaluate a model reliably. A peer-reviewed IEICE survey published in December 2023 discusses building a test network that simulates production and generating pseudo-network failures as additional training data.
Simulation can help explore failure patterns that are scarce in operational history, but it does not by itself prove that a detector will perform the same way in a live network. Validate whether patterns learned in the test environment transfer to production, and keep operational observations in the evaluation process. The survey supports the data-scarcity problem and this possible approach; it does not provide a general numerical failure rate or a universal recipe.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Correlate signals to localize likely causes
A single KPI deviation can have more than one explanation. Correlation helps assemble a broader picture by connecting alarms, counters, logs, events and configuration changes across relevant network elements or domains. The goal is to narrow the diagnostic search, not to claim certainty merely because several signals appeared at the same time.
For example, a team investigating a service symptom can examine whether a related performance change is accompanied by alarms, a recent configuration change or events in a dependent domain. The specific evidence and relationships depend on the operator’s topology and data. Jio describes cross-domain event correlation and RAN counter/log analysis; Samsung and Nokia describe alarm correlation and root-cause analysis. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent evaluations of how accurately a product localizes faults.
Present a diagnostic path, not an unsupported verdict
Ask the analytics workflow to make its supporting evidence reviewable: which events or measures are connected, what element is implicated, and what alternative explanations remain plausible. A ranked list of hypotheses can help an engineer prioritize checks, provided it is clearly labeled as a ranking and not a confirmed cause.

Human verification should compare the hypothesis with source telemetry, topology and operational context. If evidence conflicts, the engineer should be able to reject or defer the suggestion rather than being pushed into a change. Preserve the final confirmed cause and action as incident data where operational processes allow; those records can support later review of the monitoring workflow.
Choose a response and verify its effect
Detection is useful only if it leads to an appropriate operational decision. Start with recommendations that an operator reviews, or with bounded and reversible actions that have been explicitly authorized. For each response, define the target, the expected effect, the conditions under which it may run, and how its outcome will be observed.
Closed-loop operation—where analytics can trigger actions without a person approving each one—requires more than a detector. Set authorization rules, guardrails, rollback procedures and outcome monitoring. Nokia and Samsung describe automated or closed-loop response capabilities on their product pages, but those descriptions do not establish that every automated action is safe or suitable in every operator environment.
Use controlled validation before expanding automation
- Review in observation mode. Let the system produce alerts or recommendations while engineers compare them with telemetry and incident handling, without allowing the output to change the network.
- Test recommendations against the defined use case. Check whether the suggested investigation or action fits the evidence and whether the expected service measure can be observed afterward.
- Set explicit operating limits. Document which action is allowed, which conditions must be met, who owns approval, and what circumstances require the action to stop.
- Prepare recovery. Define how to reverse a change and how operators regain control if the action has an adverse or unclear effect.
- Monitor the result. Compare the intended service or performance measure before and after the action, and record whether the response resolved the issue or needs escalation.
This sequence is an implementation safeguard, not a claim that any particular product has been independently shown to improve service outcomes.

Network conditions, configuration and data sources change. A detector that was useful at one point can become less relevant if source coverage shifts, telemetry is delayed, or operating patterns change. Review the monitoring system as part of operations rather than treating its initial deployment as finished.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Telemetry health: Watch for missing, delayed or altered feeds and changes in the coverage of network elements.
- Alert quality: Review false alarms, missed incidents, alert timing and whether engineers can use the evidence provided.
- Context changes: Track relevant topology and configuration changes so that relationships used in analysis remain meaningful.
- Action outcomes: Check whether an approved response improved the intended service measure and whether rollback or escalation was needed.
- Operational fit: Confirm that alerts reach the right incident workflow and team, rather than creating a parallel queue that is not acted upon.
There are no universal thresholds for these checks established in the cited sources. Operators need to set acceptance criteria for their own use case, service expectations and operating process.

Where NWDAF and standards fit
The Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF) is a 5G Core analytics function; it is not a generic name for every AI monitoring platform. Nokia describes its NWDAF implementation as collecting data from 5G Core functions, analyzing it and providing insights to authorized consumers, and says its implementation complies with 3GPP specifications for the 5G Standalone Core. Those are Nokia’s descriptions of its own offering.
A December 2023 IEICE survey discusses NWDAF in the mobile-core context and AI functionality related to O-RAN for the radio access network. These references help place analytics in telecom architecture, but they do not justify treating all network domains or products as the same function. Release-specific interface and conformance claims require current normative 3GPP or O-RAN documents.
ITU-T E.475, dated January 2020, lists topics including network log-based anomaly detection, network configuration data analytics, prediction of network performance degradations and network fault localization. The source available for that recommendation is a contents page; it identifies those topics but is not sufficient to support detailed implementation requirements.

| Nokia Assurance Center / NWDAF | Assurance Center is described with multi-domain performance monitoring, fault management, root-cause analysis, prediction and closed-loop operations. Nokia describes NWDAF as a 5G Core analytics function. | Independent alert-quality or outcome scores, universal action safety, or comparative deployment economics. |
These summaries reflect vendor descriptions, not a standardized independent product comparison. Multi-vendor positioning is also a claim to verify against the operator’s actual interfaces, data rights, deployment constraints and operational workflows.
Evaluate fit in an operator-specific proof of concept
A proof of concept should test the actual use case and evidence sources, not just demonstrate a dashboard. Before evaluating products, agree on the service or domain in scope, what counts as a useful alert, who will verify a proposed cause, and what data the evaluation may use. Then assess the candidate system on dimensions that affect day-to-day use.
- Domain coverage: Does it address the required combination of RAN, transport, core, cloud and service signals?
- Data and interface compatibility: Can it use the operator’s available telemetry and management interfaces, with appropriate data rights?
- Multi-vendor operation: Can it handle the actual network environment rather than only the components represented in a demonstration?
- Diagnostic evidence: Can engineers inspect why an alert or cause hypothesis was produced and review the supporting telemetry?
- Latency and deployment location: Does the proposed deployment meet the use case’s operational timing and infrastructure constraints?
- Workflow integration: Can alerts and recommendations fit existing OSS/OAM and incident processes, including assignment and escalation?
- Operator controls and governance: Are authorization, security, data governance, model monitoring and change-control expectations addressed?
- Measured outcomes: Does the evaluation use operator-specific incident evidence and agreed criteria for alert usefulness and operational effect?
The reviewed product pages and technical sources do not provide a fair, comparable scorecard for these dimensions. Ask vendors to demonstrate against the operator’s own representative data and workflow, and distinguish demonstrated behavior from claimed capability.
Quick Recap
Common implementation mistakes
- Treating an anomaly as a confirmed incident: Keep detection, diagnosis and incident confirmation as distinct stages, with an assigned human owner for validation.
- Deploying a model before defining the decision: Tie the use case to a service, symptom and action so the team can judge whether the alert is useful.
- Ignoring topology and configuration context: Add relationships and change information when localization requires them; a counter alone may not distinguish among causes.
- Assuming production data will contain enough failures: Failure examples may be scarce. Test-network simulation is one possible source of additional data, but check that simulated patterns transfer to production.
- Automating an unverified recommendation: Start with operator review and define authorization, limits, rollback and outcome checks before enabling closed-loop actions.
- Accepting broad capability claims as proof of fit: Validate interfaces, domain coverage, alert quality and workflow integration in the operator’s own environment.
