If your Xperia no longer offers a new Android version, first identify the exact model, check its installed Android and Google Play system versions, and compare the phone with Sony’s published security-update end date. A missing feature upgrade does not automatically mean that security maintenance has ended. Regional release schedules, carrier certification and staged rollouts can also delay an update.
Once you know whether the phone is delayed, finished with major upgrades, or outside Sony’s security window, you can choose the right response: troubleshoot the update, continue using the phone with sensible risk controls, or replace it with a model that has a longer published support period.

Start by identifying exactly what stopped
“My Xperia stopped getting updates” can describe three different situations:
- Sony has not released the next major Android version for your model yet.
- Your phone has received its final major Android version but still receives security patches.
- Sony’s published security-update end date has passed.
These are materially different. Android version upgrades add platform features and may change the interface. Security updates address vulnerabilities and are the more important support signal for banking, work accounts, password managers and two-factor authentication. Google Play system updates are another layer, delivered separately from Sony’s firmware.

Check your Xperia’s status in five minutes
- Find the model and Android version. Open Settings > About phone (on some software versions, Settings > System > About phone). Record the model name or model number, Android version and build number.
- Check the security patch level. In Settings > About phone > Android version, note the Android security update date. The wording and location can vary slightly by Xperia software version.
- Check Google Play system updates. Open Settings > Security > Google Play system update. Install an offered update, then restart if Android requests it.
- Run Sony’s built-in update check. Open Settings > System > Software update (the exact label can vary) and select the option to check for updates. Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi and power while it checks.
- Open the Sony Support app. Sony says its software section can show the current Android version, upcoming Android versions when information is available, Xperia software details and release notes. Use the app or Sony’s support pages to match your precise model and region.
Do not identify the phone only by a retail name such as “Xperia 1.” Different generations, regional variants and carrier models can have different schedules. The model code in About phone and the country or operator that sold the device are the useful identifiers.
Use Sony’s support table instead of guessing
Sony publishes a model table showing Android progressions and a security-update end date. The dates below are Sony-published dates listed in 2026, not estimates or guarantees of a future Android upgrade.
| Model | Android progression listed by Sony | Security updates through |
|---|---|---|
| Xperia 1 V | Android 13 → 14 → 15 | 2026-05-01 |
| Xperia 10 V | Not stated in the supplied model example | 2026-06-01 |
| Xperia 5 V | Not stated in the supplied model example | 2026-08-01 |
| Xperia 1 VI | Android 14 → 15 → 16 | 2028-04-01 |
| Xperia 1 VII | Android 15 → 16 | 2031-04-01 |
A model can therefore be finished with major Android upgrades while remaining inside its security-maintenance period. Conversely, a phone that still appears functional may be outside Sony’s published security window. Treat the end date as the boundary of the manufacturer’s stated maintenance commitment, not as a promise that the device will stop working on that day.
Why another Xperia may update before yours
Sony states that phone and Android-version availability depends on country, region and operator, and that its public list covers supported devices. Firmware can require carrier certification, and releases are often staged rather than delivered to every handset simultaneously.
If a friend’s apparently identical Xperia has an update, compare the model code, country firmware and carrier before concluding that yours is obsolete. A carrier-branded phone can wait for approval even when an unlocked version has started receiving the package. A temporary pause is also possible if a rollout is being adjusted.
If an update is offered but will not install
Prepare the phone
- Back up important photos, messages and authenticator data before a major update.
- Charge the battery before starting. Sony says update packages can range from 50 MB to 1.5 GB, so leave enough storage and time for the download and installation.
- Use reliable Wi-Fi where practical, especially for the larger packages.
- Close intensive apps and avoid interrupting the restart or installation screens.
Retry the built-in updater
- Open Settings > System > Software update.
- Check for the update and read the release notes or required free space.
- Accept the download, keep the phone on power, and allow the automatic restart to finish.
- After Android starts, return to About phone and confirm the Android version and security patch date.
Update apps separately
An Android firmware update does not update every app. In Google Play Store, tap your profile image > Manage apps & device > Updates available, then choose Update all or update individual apps. This can restore compatibility when an app is failing even though the phone’s Android version has not changed.
Do not rely on Xperia Companion for newer phones
Sony’s Xperia software-update FAQ states: “The software update function of Xperia Companion is no longer available for Xperia devices released in May 2022 and after.” For those newer devices, use the built-in updater and Sony Support instructions rather than expecting Xperia Companion to install firmware. If the updater repeatedly fails, record the error message, model code, current build and available storage before contacting Sony or the carrier.
How to tell whether the phone is actually out of support
Use two separate questions:
- What is the newest Android version Sony lists for this model? This tells you whether another major platform upgrade is expected.
- What is the published security-update end date? This tells you how long Sony lists a security-maintenance window.
For example, Sony lists the Xperia 1 VI progressing from Android 14 to 15 to 16 while retaining security support through 2028-04-01. It lists the Xperia 1 V progressing from Android 13 to 14 to 15 with security updates through 2026-05-01. The absence of Android 16 on the 1 V does not by itself prove that every security patch has ended; the model’s security date is the relevant check.
Support information can change when Sony publishes a new notice. Recheck the current model table and the Support app rather than relying on an old forum post or a carrier answer for a different regional variant.

After the published date, Sony no longer states a manufacturer-maintained security window for that model. The handset may continue to turn on, make calls and run many apps, but you should reassess what you trust it to do.
Reduce exposure while you plan
- Install every available app update and Google Play system update.
- Remove apps you no longer need, especially those that request broad permissions.
- Use a strong screen lock and keep device encryption and Google security features enabled.
- Move banking, primary work administration, password-management and other high-impact accounts to a supported device if your risk tolerance is low.
- Keep reliable backups and ensure you can receive two-factor codes if the old phone fails.
These steps reduce exposure; they do not extend Sony’s security commitment. An app’s continued availability is not proof that the underlying operating system is still receiving patches.

A custom ROM can sound like a way around an end-of-support date, but safety depends on the exact model, bootloader status, firmware compatibility, vendor components, update maintenance and the trustworthiness of the build. No model-specific, authoritative custom-ROM path is established here, so do not treat an unofficial installation as a guaranteed security solution. Unlocking a bootloader can also erase data and affect device features or warranty terms.
When replacement is the sensible choice
Replacement is reasonable when the security end date has passed and the phone handles sensitive accounts, when important apps no longer support its Android version, or when battery and hardware repairs are no longer economical. It is less urgent when the phone remains within Sony’s security window, receives current patches and is used mainly for low-risk tasks.
Sony lists the Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 1 VII as examples of newer models with longer published support windows. The 1 VI is listed through 2028-04-01 and the 1 VII through 2031-04-01. Those dates describe Sony’s published security commitments; they do not establish retail price, stock, carrier compatibility or repair cost in your market.
Compare a replacement on support, not just camera or speed
| Decision factor | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|
| Security support | Published end date for the exact model and your market |
| Android upgrades | How many major versions are listed as remaining |
| Network compatibility | Carrier approval, supported bands and eSIM or SIM requirements |
| Availability and price | Current local stock and total cost, including accessories and repairs |
| Hardware fit | Battery condition, camera needs, storage, display, water resistance and repairability |
Buying a phone with a longer support window can cost less over its useful life than replacing an inexpensive handset soon after its security maintenance ends. Confirm the support date at the time of purchase because availability, regional policy and published plans can change.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Update is listed: back up, charge, use Wi-Fi, install it through Settings, then verify the new build.
- No update is listed but the security date is still ahead: check region, carrier and model code; monitor Sony Support for staged availability.
- Major upgrades have ended but security support remains: keep installing security, Google Play system and app updates; assess app compatibility.
- The security date has passed: limit high-risk use, keep backups and plan a supported replacement.
- Firmware installation repeatedly fails: document the exact error and contact Sony or the carrier with the model code and build information.
