If your tap water turns yellow, brown, or rust-colored after nearby hydrant flushing, avoid laundry and limit hot-water use while you check your water utility’s current instructions. Use cold water to check whether it clears, and follow any local drinking-water or boil-water advisory. Discoloration can come from stirred-up sediment, but its timing alone does not prove the cause or establish whether the water is safe to drink.
Why can water turn brown after hydrant flushing?
Hydrant flushing and other high-flow activity can disturb iron, mineral sediment, or rust particles inside water mains. Those particles may temporarily make tap water look yellow, brown, or rusty. The timing may point to flushing, but it is not proof: household plumbing or another water-system issue can also cause discoloration. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission describes possible causes and troubleshooting steps in its discolored-water facts; Portland Water Bureau also lists plumbing-related possibilities in its troubleshooting guidance.

What should you do first?
- If flushing is underway nearby, pause water use where practical. Wait until the flushing activity is over before running taps or water-using appliances; Tigard advises customers to avoid water use during flushing where possible in its water guidance.
- Keep discolored water out of laundry and, where possible, the hot-water system. Avoid washing light-colored clothing, and limit hot-water use while the water is discolored. Sediment may stain laundry or settle in the water heater. If your utility warns that sediment can clog filters or ice makers, avoid sending discolored water through them.
- Check a cold-water tap. Use an unfiltered cold-water faucet to assess whether the water is clear. Follow your utility’s recommended interval; do not keep a tap running continuously if the water does not clear.
- For drinking and cooking, follow local advice. Consider bottled or stored water while discoloration remains if that is consistent with your utility’s guidance. Do not treat this precaution as proof that all discolored water is unsafe—or that it is safe. Follow any current local drinking-water or boil-water advisory.
How long should you run the tap?
There is no single interval that applies everywhere. Utilities give different instructions, so use your own provider’s current notice rather than treating another city’s directions as a safety standard.

These are local examples, not a national rule. The intervals and precautions above are from the providers’ own pages: Portland’s discolored-water event guidance, Tigard’s water guidance, and Fitchburg’s hydrant-flushing page. If the water does not clear within your utility’s stated interval, stop running it and follow the utility’s directions about waiting, checking again, or calling.

What to do once the water clears
When the cold water runs clear, briefly run cold water through household fixtures to clear the home’s plumbing. If flow or pressure at a faucet is reduced, inspect and clean its screen if you can do so safely. Portland and Tigard both give post-flushing steps in their event guidance and water guidance.
When should you contact the utility?
Report discoloration that persists, returns, or comes with reduced pressure or water volume. The utility can assess whether the issue affects the wider system; Fitchburg, for example, asks residents to call if discoloration remains after its stated flushing interval. If the problem is limited to one fixture or affects only hot water, a household plumbing issue may be involved. Ask the utility whether it can help distinguish a system issue, or contact a qualified plumber for next steps.
