First, check the exact phone model and confirm its security-support status on the manufacturer’s official support page. A delayed or missing patch does not by itself mean support has ended. If the manufacturer has ended support, plan to move to a phone that still receives security updates; until then, the old phone remains exposed to vulnerabilities that will not be fixed by its maker.
Check whether support has actually ended
Find your phone’s exact model name and its installed security update level in Settings, then check the manufacturer’s support information for that model and region. Android update schedules differ by manufacturer, and a carrier or regional variant may have a different schedule. Google publishes support dates for Pixel phones; for other Android phones, consult the phone maker directly.

Do not treat a late update as proof that the phone is unsupported. Compare the model and update level with the manufacturer’s published schedule, and look for a stated end date or confirmation that the device is no longer eligible for security patches. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) notes that Android support varies: its platform guide says most devices receive software updates for up to three years after first release, while many brands offer up to seven years. For a concrete brand-specific example, Google says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates from their first availability on the Google Store in the US. Other Pixel generations have different terms, and this commitment should not be assumed for Android phones generally. Google Pixel update policy

What it means when updates stop
When manufacturer support ends, the phone stops receiving that manufacturer’s security patches. As vulnerabilities become known and remain unpatched, the device’s security exposure increases. That does not mean every unsupported phone is immediately compromised, and the available guidance does not provide a reliable probability of compromise for an individual phone or user.
The NCSC’s guidance is direct: “Once a device reaches end-of-life, it will no longer receive security updates and should be replaced to maintain security standards.” NCSC Android platform guide

Plan a replacement around support, not age or price alone
The clearest long-term option is a phone that is currently supported. It need not be the newest or most expensive model. Before buying, check the exact model and variant, whether it is receiving patches now, the manufacturer’s published security-support end date and update frequency, its price, and whether it meets your needs.
- Support commitment: Prefer a manufacturer-published end date and update schedule over a vague assurance that a phone is “secure.”
- Exact model and variant: Verify the specific device you intend to buy; support can vary by model, region, and carrier variant.
- Current patch status: Check that the phone is receiving updates, not merely that the maker once announced a long support period.
- Fit and cost: Balance the verified support period against your budget and practical requirements.
Google’s Android Enterprise Recommended programme requires participating manufacturers to publish support end dates and update frequency. That requirement applies within the programme; it does not establish one support policy for every Android maker or device. Android Enterprise Recommended

If you cannot replace it immediately
Prioritize replacement, but do not mistake interim precautions for a security fix. The NCSC says risk-reduction steps do not make obsolete products risk-free, and identifies stopping use as the only fully effective way to mitigate the risk. That is organisational guidance, but the principle is relevant: no ordinary precaution brings an unsupported phone back to the security position of a supported one. NCSC guidance on obsolete products

As a cautious practical measure while arranging a replacement, avoid relying on the unsupported phone for sensitive activity. This cannot guarantee protection. A VPN, antivirus app, case, battery replacement, or other accessory does not restore manufacturer security patches; the cited guidance does not establish an interim setup that makes an unsupported phone equivalent to a supported one.

- Back up any data you want to keep.
- Sign out of accounts and remove personal information from the device.
- Erase the phone using the device’s reset process.
- Remove the SIM card and any memory card, where applicable.
- Follow the specific trade-in or recycling programme’s instructions. For example, Apple’s trade-in guidance for Android devices it receives calls for backing up, signing out, erasing the phone, and removing SIM cards, memory cards, and accessories. Apple Trade In
