Start by checking your phone’s Battery settings to see what used power during the period the charge dropped. Then match the fix to the likely cause: background activity, heavy screen or network use, recent setup or software updates, heat, or an aging battery. Menu names differ by model, so use your manufacturer’s instructions for exact steps.
Find out what changed before changing settings
Open the built-in Battery screen and review the time period when the drain occurred. Compare a bad day with a typical one, then look at the leading apps and system activity. A high-use app is a clue, not automatically the cause: consider what the phone was doing and where it was at the time.

On iPhone, go to Settings > Battery. Apple’s current guidance describes app and system activity details and, on devices running iOS or iPadOS 26 or later, a Daily Usage view comparing current-day use with the previous seven days. Look for indicators such as background activity, notifications, or weak or absent mobile coverage. See Apple’s battery-drain guidance.
On Android, start at Settings > Battery, then review battery use and high-use apps. Exact labels and available controls vary by manufacturer; some Google instructions apply only to Android 13 or later. Check your phone maker’s support page if the path differs. Consider use, signal, and surroundings
Brightness and screen-on time can add up, as can navigation, camera use, graphics-heavy apps, streaming, GPS, and hotspot use. Mobile connectivity matters too: weak signal can increase power use, while Wi-Fi can use less power than a mobile network in suitable conditions. A phone that is hot may drain faster even while idle. Google warns that heat-related drain can also damage the battery.
Choose a fix that matches the likely cause

Use targeted changes rather than turning off everything at once. That makes it easier to tell whether the suspected cause was responsible and helps preserve the features you rely on.

Allow for recent setup or software updates
A sudden drop after an update or initial setup may be temporary. Apple advises waiting a few days after an iPhone or iPad update before reassessing, because update-related tasks can continue in the background. Samsung says consumption can be temporarily higher during the first few days as apps and services optimize on a new or newly set-up Galaxy device. Restart, update, and recheck if the drain continues
If the battery use does not fit your activity or the problem persists, restart the phone and check for operating-system and app updates. Google recommends these steps for Android devices. Afterward, check Battery settings again over a comparable period to see whether the same app or system activity remains prominent. For update-related drain on iPhone or iPad, follow Apple’s advice to wait a few days and then check again.

Check battery condition and seek service when warranted
Rechargeable batteries lose capacity over time, so an older phone may run for less time even when its usage pattern has not changed. Use the built-in battery-health screen or the manufacturer’s diagnostic tool; a percentage threshold from one brand should not be applied to another.
iPhone
On iPhone 15 and later, Battery Health is under Settings > Battery; on iPhone 14 and earlier, look under Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Apple says to consider replacement if Battery Health displays “Service.” Availability and exact wording can vary by device and software version. Details: Apple Support.

Samsung directs Galaxy owners to Samsung Members Phone Diagnostics to check battery condition. If battery-related problems continue, contact Samsung support or a service center. Use the diagnostic or service route provided by your phone’s manufacturer. Google advises contacting the manufacturer if restart, updates, battery-use checks, and keeping the phone cool do not resolve the issue. Rapid drain alone does not establish that a battery needs replacement; a model-specific diagnosis is more useful.
