Turn off Always-On display
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Turn off Always On Display.
Apple describes Always-On display as a dimmed version of the Lock Screen that can remain visible while the iPhone is locked. On supported models, it can show the time, date, notifications, and widgets. Apple’s iPhone User Guide

If the Always-On display switch is missing
The setting appears only on supported iPhone models. Apple’s current support list includes iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max; iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max; iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max; and iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max. Apple says Always-On display is off by default on iPhone Air. Check your exact model and software if the switch is not in Settings; its absence alone does not indicate a fault. - This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Why a locked iPhone screen may already be dark
Always-On display can turn off automatically in certain situations. Apple lists face-down placement or an obstructed view, being away from a paired Apple Watch, an active CarPlay session, Continuity Camera use, Low Power Mode, Sleep Focus, and the usual bedtime as conditions that can make the display go dark. A dark screen in these circumstances does not mean the setting has been switched off. Apple’s iPhone User Guide
Always-On display, Auto-Lock, and StandBy are different
- Always-On display controls whether a dimmed Lock Screen remains visible after the iPhone locks.
- Auto-Lock controls how long the iPhone waits before locking. Changing Auto-Lock is not how to disable Always-On display; Apple notes that delaying or preventing Auto-Lock may increase power consumption.
- StandBy shows clocks, widgets, photos, and Live Activities when an iPhone is charging on its side. It has separate display-duration controls. On supported models, Always-On display can keep StandBy visible, but turning off Always-On display is not the same as turning off StandBy. Apple’s StandBy guide
Apple says Always-On display can operate at a refresh rate as low as 1 Hz; that technical figure is not a battery-life estimate. Apple’s cited guidance does not quantify a battery-life gain from disabling the feature. Apple Support
