A S.M.A.R.T. or predictive-failure warning means the drive is reporting a reliability problem, but it does not tell you how much time remains. Find out which disk triggered the alert, protect your data, then follow the drive maker’s diagnostic and replacement guidance.
What the warning means—and what it cannot tell you
S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) and predictive-failure alerts are risk signals from a drive or the computer’s monitoring software. Microsoft defines a nonzero failure-prediction value as the device currently predicting imminent failure. That is not a dependable countdown: the alert does not establish whether the drive will keep working for hours, days, or longer. Do not plan around a guessed failure date or assume that continued normal operation means the drive is safe. Microsoft Learn’s failure-prediction field documentation explains what that value represents.

The exact wording and where it appears can vary by PC, BIOS, Windows version, drive type, and manufacturer. Western Digital Support describes S.M.A.R.T. failures as indicating that a drive is at risk for imminent failure. The practical response is the same: secure your files and prepare for possible replacement.

Back up before running tests or troubleshooting
Copy irreplaceable files to a different physical device or another suitable backup destination—not to another partition on the same failing drive. If you already have an appropriate destination, use it rather than delaying to shop for one. Microsoft recommends backing up after a critical storage warning, and Western Digital advises making a backup to another device as quickly as possible when a S.M.A.R.T. failure is present and the data remains accessible. Microsoft’s critical storage warning guidance and Western Digital’s S.M.A.R.T. guidance both put data protection first.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- If files are still readable: prioritize the most valuable and difficult-to-replace files, then copy the rest if the drive continues to respond. Avoid treating a cloud-synced folder on the same PC as your only backup.
- If the drive is inaccessible, making unusual noises, or contains exceptionally valuable data: stop repeated troubleshooting and consider professional data recovery. Further attempts may not help, and the right choice depends on the data’s importance and the drive’s condition.
Find out which disk generated the alert
Do not assume the warning refers to the Windows boot drive. A PC can have more than one internal or connected storage device, and the alert may identify a data disk instead. Check the warning’s details and match them to the disk shown by Windows or the computer’s firmware.
Check the Windows 11 storage health view
- Open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes.
- Select the disk you want to inspect and open Properties.
- Look for the critical warning and its stated condition, such as low spare capacity, degraded reliability, or a read-only state.
Microsoft’s built-in health monitoring applies to NVM SSDs; it does not monitor SATA SSDs or HDDs. Therefore, not seeing a critical warning in this Windows view is not proof that a SATA SSD or conventional hard drive is healthy. The Windows view also may not be the source of an alert shown by the BIOS or a manufacturer utility. Microsoft lists the supported warning conditions and monitoring limits here.

Why raw S.M.A.R.T. numbers can be misleading
There is no universal interpretation for every raw S.M.A.R.T. value. Drive manufacturers define attributes and thresholds, and the raw readings are vendor-specific. A number that appears in a utility may not have the same meaning across different drive models, so do not use an online rule of thumb to declare the drive safe or predict when it will fail.
Western Digital says a failed critical attribute means the device is bad and should be replaced. Its support guidance also notes that an estimated remaining-life percentage is an approximate manufacturer prediction; a value below 0% does not automatically mean the device has failed. Treat the overall warning and the manufacturer’s interpretation as more meaningful than an isolated raw figure. Western Digital explains its attribute and threshold guidance.

After the backup, run the maker’s checks and plan replacement
Once your important files are protected, consult the drive manufacturer’s diagnostic and warranty guidance. Western Digital describes short and extended self-tests, but testing should not delay a backup. A test can provide additional information; it cannot guarantee that a drive will remain reliable.
If a critical S.M.A.R.T. attribute has failed, plan to replace the drive rather than relying on continued use. Check the computer’s specifications before buying an internal replacement: the warning does not reveal the supported form factor, interface, capacity, or whether an HDD or SSD is appropriate. An external drive can serve as a backup destination, but it is not a replacement for an internal disk needed to run the computer.
