What to Do When Your New Apple Device Won’t Restore from a Backup

Use these safe, route-specific steps when a new iPhone or iPad won’t restore from iCloud or a computer backup, including what to do about update errors and missing data.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your new iPhone or iPad won’t restore, first identify whether you’re restoring from iCloud or a Mac or PC, and note the exact error on screen. The right fix depends on that route, whether setup has already finished, and whether the backup is compatible with the device’s software. Before erasing or setting up the device as new, read the backup-preservation warning below.

Start with the restore route and the exact error

Are you restoring from an iCloud backup or from a backup stored on a computer? Also note the complete alert, including any message that the backup requires a newer version of iOS or iPadOS. Those details determine which steps are safe and relevant.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • iCloud: The device should be at the Hello/setup flow. On Transfer Your Apps & Data, choose From iCloud Backup and sign in to the Apple Account associated with the backup.
  • Mac or PC: Connect the device to the computer with a compatible USB cable, open the appropriate Apple app, select the device, and choose Restore Backup.
  • Already finished setup: An iCloud restore generally requires erasing the newly set-up device first. Erasing removes the data currently on it; do not proceed until you have checked whether anything on the new device needs to be saved.

Apple’s current workflow is described in Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which restore route should you use?

Start with the backup you can actually identify: check whether the intended backup is visible and compare its date and size. If it is an iCloud backup, you need a reliable Wi-Fi connection and power; cellular internet cannot be used for an iCloud restore. If it is a computer backup, you need access to a Mac or PC that recognizes the device over USB, compatible software, and—if the backup is encrypted—the backup password.

Also consider software compatibility and where the data you need is stored. Either route can be affected by a software-version mismatch. Some data syncs separately or downloads after setup, so a computer backup may not be the answer for every missing item, and an iCloud backup does not contain all information in the same way. If one route fails, trying another available backup or, where practical, the other restore route is reasonable.

iPhone won’t restore from iCloud backup

Check Wi-Fi, power, and setup state

Connect the device to power and a reliable Wi-Fi network, then leave it connected while the restore runs. Apple says an iCloud restore cannot use a cellular internet connection: “You can’t restore from a backup over a mobile internet connection.” The restore may take a different amount of time depending on backup size and network speed; Apple does not specify a standard duration.

If you have already completed setup and need to start the iCloud restore, erase the device and return to the Hello screen. This is destructive: it removes current device data. Only after confirming you are ready to erase, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings (the equivalent iPad setting may say iPad). Follow the prompts; when setup begins again, choose From iCloud Backup on Transfer Your Apps & Data.

Confirm the account and select the intended backup

Sign in with the Apple Account that holds the backup. If more than one backup is listed, compare its date and size with the backup you intend to use before selecting it. If the expected backup does not appear, verify that a backup exists under the account you used and try another Wi-Fi network. If the restore fails, Apple also recommends trying another available backup or network.

Respond to account and update prompts

Apps and media may have been purchased using more than one Apple Account. When prompted, enter the password for the account requested. If the screen offers Skip this Step or Cancel, you can defer authentication and sign in later, but content associated with that account may not restore until you authenticate it.

iPhone backup not showing up or the wrong backup appears

A missing backup may mean you are signed in to a different Apple Account, the backup was not created, or the current network is interfering with the check. Confirm the account first, then inspect the available backup dates and sizes. Try a different Wi-Fi network if the expected backup still does not appear or an iCloud restore errors out. If you find multiple backups, choose the one whose date and size match the backup you intended to use rather than assuming the most recently listed one is correct.

Do not casually choose to set up the device as new if you still need an older saved iCloud backup. Apple warns that setting up as new can create iCloud backups that replace saved backups. If you have already set up the device as new and still need the older backup, erase the newly set-up device and restore from the saved backup as soon as possible. Erasing removes current data, so preserve anything on the device that you need before proceeding.

Restore from a computer: update, connect, and select the backup

Choose the app for your computer

  • Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later: Use Finder.
  • Windows 10 or later: Use Apple Devices.
  • Other supported configurations: Apple also documents iTunes for relevant older or alternate setups.

Update the computer and the Apple app you are using. Connect the device with a compatible USB cable, select it in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, and choose Restore Backup. Compare the backup date and size before confirming. If the backup is encrypted, enter its password when asked; without that password, the encrypted backup cannot be restored through this workflow. A compatible cable is only relevant to a computer restore; it will not resolve an iCloud network issue or make a corrupt backup usable.

Keep the device connected through its restart and any subsequent sync. Disconnecting too early can interrupt the process. A restart during the restore does not by itself mean that you should unplug the device; wait for the restore and sync to finish.

If the computer can’t find the iPhone or restore fails

  1. Update macOS or Windows and update Apple Devices or iTunes.
  2. Reconnect the device directly by USB, using a compatible cable; if the connection remains unreliable, try another cable or USB connection.
  3. Restart the computer and the iPhone or iPad, then reconnect and try again.
  4. Follow Apple’s device-detection steps if the computer still does not recognize the device.
  5. If Windows iTunes hangs or a backup never finishes, update or adjust security software as Apple advises.
  6. If the computer lacks storage space, free disk space and retry.
  7. If practical, try another computer or restore from iCloud instead.

Apple’s computer troubleshooting guidance is at If you can’t back up your iOS or iPadOS device to a computer or restore it from a backup. A corrupt or incompatible backup may remain unusable; these steps do not guarantee it can be repaired. If you switch to another backup, check its date and size first so you understand which saved data you are choosing.

“Restore backup requires a newer iOS version”

A backup made on a device with newer software may not restore to a device running an older version. Apple says, “Your backup might need a newer version of iOS or iPadOS. If so, you’ll see an error that you can’t restore it.” The remedy differs depending on where the backup is stored.

For an iCloud backup

When prompted during setup, install the available software update. The device updates before restoring; keep it connected to power and Wi-Fi, then continue with the restore. Do not try to bypass the prompt by selecting a different restore route unless you have an appropriate backup available.

For a computer backup

Apple’s procedure for a computer-backup version error is to finish setting up the device without transferring data, update the device software, then erase the device and start setup again to restore the backup. The erase is required in this procedure and removes what is currently on the device. Save any data you need before beginning.

Missing data after restoring iPhone or iPad

Do not assume data is lost as soon as the setup progress bar completes. Some photos, videos, messages, voice memos, apps, and purchased media may continue to download or sync after setup, depending on their settings and source. Keep the device connected to Wi-Fi and power and check whether restore activity is still underway. The amount of time this takes can vary; the backup size and network speed affect restore time, and there is no single guaranteed completion time.

Check how the missing item was stored

Not every item is included in iCloud Backup in the same way. Some information syncs separately through iCloud or another service, while third-party app data may need to be restored from that app provider. Check the relevant service or app account and its sync settings as well as the backup. Purchased media and apps may also depend on signing in to the Apple Account that was used to obtain them.

Device type can also matter: a backup from an iPad may not restore messages and voice memos to an iPhone, or vice versa. If you have a computer backup, check whether it contains the missing item. Before trying a different restore, back up current data to a computer so you do not overwrite information you want to keep. This check can help separate an item that was never in the backup from one that is still syncing or needs its original service or account.

When to contact Apple Support

If the official steps, another network or backup, and—where possible—another computer do not resolve the problem, contact Apple Support with the exact alert and useful details: device model, iOS or iPadOS version, restore route, and the backup’s date and size. This helps distinguish a connection or software issue from an unavailable or incompatible backup. Apple’s guidance does not promise recovery of a corrupt or incompatible backup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I restore an iCloud backup after I’ve already set up my new iPhone?

Generally, you need to erase the newly set-up device and return to the Hello/setup flow before choosing From iCloud Backup. Erasing removes current data, so save anything you need before proceeding.

Can I restore an iCloud backup over cellular data?

No. Apple says iCloud restore cannot use a mobile internet connection. Connect the device to Wi-Fi and power and leave it connected while the restore runs.

What should I do if my iPhone backup isn’t showing up?

Confirm you are signed in to the Apple Account that has the backup, verify that a backup exists, and check the available backup dates and sizes. If it still does not appear or restore, try another Wi-Fi network.

Why does my iPhone say the backup requires a newer iOS version?

The device software may be older than the software required by the backup. For iCloud, install the update when prompted. For a computer backup, Apple’s procedure is to finish setup without transferring data, update the device, erase it, and return to setup to restore.

Why is some data missing after restoring my iPhone or iPad?

Some items continue to download or sync after setup, while other information syncs separately or comes from a third-party app provider. Keep Wi-Fi and power connected, check the relevant account or service, and remember that an iPad backup may not restore messages or voice memos to an iPhone, or vice versa.

The Bottom Line

Match the fix to the backup route and the exact error. Keep iCloud restores on Wi-Fi and power, verify the backup’s date and size, and do not erase or set up as new until you have protected data and considered whether an older saved backup could be replaced.
