If your fiber internet is slow or keeps dropping, first check your provider’s outage status, then restart the connection equipment and compare Wi-Fi with a wired Ethernet test. A slow Wi-Fi result alone does not prove the fiber line is at fault: testing more than one device and, where possible, connecting a computer directly to the router helps narrow down whether the issue is with Wi-Fi, a device, or the service reaching your home.
1. Check power and provider outage status
Make sure the router and any mesh or Wi-Fi booster units are switched on. With full-fiber service, check the optical network terminal (ONT)—the fiber connection box—as well. The router and ONT both need power and to be working for the connection to reach your devices.

Check your provider’s service-status page or app before buying equipment. If it lists a local fault, ask the provider for an estimated repair time and track its updates. If there is no listed outage, report your problem anyway: the provider may not yet know about a fault affecting your connection. A third-party outage tracker can offer a clue, but it does not replace the provider’s status information or a fault report. Also check whether someone at home is downloading large files, installing updates, or streaming high-definition video while you test.
2. Restart equipment and check whether one device is affected
Restart the router, ONT, mesh or booster units, and the phone, computer, or tablet you are testing with. Temporarily disconnect devices you are not using, especially those downloading, updating, or streaming. Try more than once; a single test may not capture an intermittent fault.

If only one device is slow, restart it, close unused apps, and check that its software and security updates are current before changing broadband equipment. If the problem began after a change to your home or network, reverse that change if practical and test again. Keep a note of when any dropouts occur and how long they last.
3. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired speed test
Run a free speed test, then repeat it at different times of day. For a more useful comparison, connect a computer or tablet directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and test it there; then compare with Wi-Fi on the same device and other devices. Ofcom says a directly connected computer or tablet is the most accurate way to test speed, and that a wired connection is usually faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi. Speed is not the only factor: lag can disrupt live calls and gaming even when a speed result looks adequate.

| What you observe | What it suggests | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet works well, but Wi-Fi is poor | A Wi-Fi coverage, interference, placement, or device-use issue is more likely than a fiber-service fault; this comparison does not prove one specific cause. | Check router placement, walls and obstacles, interference, competing device use, and the affected device. |
| Ethernet is slow or disconnects across devices | A Wi-Fi-only explanation is less likely, but the test alone cannot identify a specific fault. | Give the provider your test results and ask it to check the service, ONT/router, and network. |
| Only one device has trouble | The cause may be specific to that device. | Restart it, close unused apps, check updates, and compare it with another device before replacing broadband equipment. |
| The provider reports a local outage | The service may be affected by a known area fault. | Report or track the issue with the provider and ask for its estimated repair time. |

4. Improve Wi-Fi if the wired connection is sound
Try free changes before shopping for new equipment. Put the router in an open, central position, raised off the floor, with as few walls and obstacles as possible between it and the devices you use. Keep it away from electrical equipment that may interfere, and temporarily disconnect idle devices before retesting. For a stationary device with an Ethernet port, a wired connection may be a practical way to avoid weak Wi-Fi coverage.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Ofcom’s Improving your wifi experience guide also covers factors that affect wireless performance. Wi-Fi speed can vary with the router, device, distance, walls, interference, and how many devices are competing for the connection.
5. Decide whether you need new equipment
An Ethernet cable can help you make the wired comparison; it does not repair a fiber-line or provider-network fault. Consider replacing a router only after checking with your provider: it may offer a replacement, charge for one, or not support a model you buy yourself.

- Brand-New 6 GHz Band – Experience the latest frequency of WiFi, eliminating interference from all legacy devices. The 6 GHz band can work as a backhaul to ensure stable connections between nodes by default. You can switch it to Wi-Fi Network mode and connect your WiFi 6E-compatible devices to 6GHz Network³
- True Tri-Band Speed – All three WiFi bands work together to unleash your network’s total speeds up to 5,400 Mbps for 200 devices(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);5 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)¹ ³

- Unlock the Full Potential of WiFi 6 - Opening the 6 GHz band will change the game for WiFi 6. WiFi 6 brings about upgraded performance in network efficiency and capacity. Whereas the advantages of WiFi 6 are not fully realized while competing with transmissions from WiFi 5 (or other radios). The 6 GHz band is available only for WiFi 6 traffic, allowing WiFi 6 to meet its intended potential
Mesh equipment may help with weak Wi-Fi coverage in a larger home, but it costs money and too many units can make problems worse. Boosters and powerline adapters are not guaranteed fixes: boosters can affect speed, and powerline results depend on the home’s wiring. Ask about UKCA or CE safety marking for powerline adapters. None of these products fixes a provider-side outage or fiber-line fault.

Ask how the provider will keep you updated, what repair time it expects, how you can stay connected, and whether an engineer visit or equipment replacement could incur a charge. Ofcom says: “Your provider is responsible for fixing faults, even if another company like Openreach owns the network.”
UK remedies and complaints: check what applies to your provider
The following options are UK-specific and depend on the provider participating in the relevant scheme and on your circumstances. Ofcom’s guide says automatic compensation may apply in certain cases, including a reported total loss of service that is not fully fixed after two full working days, a missed engineer appointment, or a delayed start to a new service.
Under the Broadband Speeds Code of Practice, participating providers should give customers speed information, including a minimum guaranteed download speed. If your speed stays below that minimum and the provider cannot raise it within 30 calendar days, you may be able to leave without penalty. Confirm current terms and your eligibility directly with your provider.

Follow your provider’s complaints procedure if the fault is not resolved. Ofcom says unresolved cases may be taken to an independent dispute-resolution scheme after six weeks or after you receive a deadlock letter. Ofcom can use fault reports to monitor patterns, but it does not resolve individual complaints. See Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide and its broadband speeds guidance for details.
