Yes. A malicious browser extension or other malware can steal passwords or session cookies, and a redirect can lead to a phishing page that tricks you into entering credentials. But a changed homepage, search engine, or redirect is not proof that your passwords were stolen. Investigate the browser problem and secure any credentials you may have exposed.
What a browser hijacker can—and cannot—tell you
“Browser hijacker” is an everyday label for problems such as unexpected redirects, a changed search engine or homepage, unfamiliar extensions, and persistent pop-ups. Google lists these among possible signs of unwanted software or malware. They are reasons to investigate, not confirmation that an account has been compromised. Google Chrome Help: remove unwanted ads, pop-ups and malware.

Password theft is possible through a malicious extension or malware, and a redirect may take you to a fake sign-in page. CISA reported a historical 2018 case in which a Chrome Web Store extension was used to steal passwords and cookies. That case demonstrates that the threat is real; it does not show how common password theft by browser hijackers is today. CISA: malicious Chrome extension alert.
The reverse is also possible: an extension could steal information without an obvious redirect. A browser symptom alone cannot establish either that credentials were stolen or that they are safe.

What to do if your browser is redirecting or settings changed
Record what you noticed
- Note unfamiliar redirects, ads, or pop-ups, including when they appear.
- Check whether your homepage or search engine changed.
- Look for extensions or toolbars you do not recognize, and note any malware alerts.
These clues help you investigate the unwanted software without assuming that a password was captured.
Check for unwanted software before resetting Chrome
For Chrome on a desktop, Google recommends checking the computer for unwanted programs before resetting the browser. Its instructions include app-removal steps for Windows and Mac; they are not universal instructions for Firefox, Edge, mobile devices, or managed work computers. Review Chrome extensions and remove ones you do not recognize or trust. If you need a broader malware check, use security software you already trust or software provided by your organization. Do not follow a “cleaner” or update download offered in a pop-up; Google advises avoiding suspicious prompts and getting software from its official site.
Reset Chrome only if the problem continues
On Chrome desktop, the reset path is Settings → Reset settings → Restore settings to their original defaults → Reset settings. Menu labels can change. A browser reset is not a substitute for checking the computer for unwanted programs.

When and how to change passwords
Change a password promptly if you typed it into a page you now suspect was fake, received a compromise warning, or have another concrete reason to believe it was exposed. Go directly to the legitimate service’s website or app rather than following a link from a suspicious page. If you reused that password, change it on every account that uses it. Google recommends unique, strong passwords. Google Account Help: check the strength and security of your saved passwords.
If the affected credentials could provide access to your primary email or financial accounts, secure those accounts early. Review recent account activity and use the service’s available recovery or sign-out controls if anything looks unfamiliar.

Check saved passwords—and know what the check does

What Safe Browsing can help with
Google says Chrome Safe Browsing checks sites and downloads for malicious activity and warns about some dangers. Chrome may disable an abusive or malicious extension it detects, and it can check when a saved password is entered on a new site and prompt you if the page appears to be phishing. These features can reduce risk, but a lack of warnings is not proof that a device is clean. Google Chrome Help: Safe Browsing in Chrome.
Add a second layer of account protection
Google recommends two-step verification to add protection to an account. Turn it on through the account provider’s official security settings and follow that service’s setup and recovery guidance. Google Account Help: turn on 2-Step Verification.
