If Bitcoin is below what you paid, the loss alone does not tell you whether to sell or hold. Reassess whether the position still fits your financial needs, ability to withstand further losses, time horizon and overall portfolio; if you sell, understand the U.S. tax and recordkeeping consequences first. This is general U.S.-oriented information, not individualized financial or tax advice.
Start with your situation, not your purchase price
Your original cost can loom large when deciding what to do, but it does not determine what Bitcoin will be worth next or whether the position suits you now. The SEC says diversification—holding a variety of assets—can lower overall portfolio risk, and that an appropriate asset mix depends in part on risk tolerance and investment timeframe. SEC guidance on diversification and asset allocation does not predict Bitcoin’s price or prescribe a particular action for every investor.

- Would you choose this position at its current size today if you did not already own it? Consider the amount at risk, not only the price you paid.
- Could you withstand a further large decline? If another fall would jeopardize near-term bills, emergency savings or other important needs, the position may be larger or riskier than you can comfortably carry.
- Has your reason for buying changed? Separate a change in your circumstances or investment rationale from the hope of simply getting back to your purchase price.
- How concentrated are you? Consider Bitcoin alongside your other investments rather than treating it as a standalone decision.
These questions can help clarify your choice; they cannot establish whether Bitcoin will recover. A decision to hold, reduce or exit should reflect your circumstances rather than a promised outcome.

Compare the practical consequences of holding and selling
There is no universally suitable hold-or-sell answer. Compare the options against the factors that affect your own finances:
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
| Consideration | If you continue holding | If you sell or otherwise dispose of Bitcoin |
|---|---|---|
| Risk and time horizon | You remain exposed to future price changes. Ask whether you can tolerate further losses and wait through them. | You reduce or end your exposure to the amount sold, but the sale does not guarantee a better outcome than holding would have produced. |
| Cash needs | The value remains subject to market changes and may not meet a near-term cash need at the amount you expect. | You turn the amount sold into proceeds, subject to transaction details and costs. |
| Portfolio concentration | Bitcoin continues to account for its current share of your investments; compare that share with your overall risk tolerance. | A partial or full sale changes that exposure. Consider how the resulting portfolio fits your broader allocation. |
| U.S. federal tax and records | A quoted decline alone generally is not a completed sale or disposition. Keep the records needed to establish basis and track any later transaction. | A sale or other disposition may produce a capital gain or loss. Calculate it using the applicable basis, proceeds and allocable transaction costs, and retain supporting records. |
| What you own | Confirm whether you hold Bitcoin directly or an investment product linked to it. | Check the specific product’s official documents and terms before acting; the tax and transaction details depend on what you sell. |
The comparison is a way to organize the decision, not a forecast or a recommendation to buy more, hold, or sell.
Understand the U.S. tax difference between a decline and a sale
The IRS treats digital assets as property for U.S. tax purposes. For a personal- or investment-use digital asset that is sold or otherwise disposed of, the transaction may produce a capital gain or loss. See the IRS overview of digital assets.

A lower quoted price is not, by itself, a realized loss
A drop in value while you still hold the asset is different from a completed transaction. The Taxpayer Advocate Service explains that, in the circumstances it describes, a taxpayer cannot claim a loss on a digital asset merely because it has lost value; a closed and completed transaction, such as a sale or exchange, is needed. It also notes that a frozen account or assets involved in bankruptcy proceedings do not, in those described circumstances, create a deductible loss before such a transaction. See Taxpayer Advocate Service guidance on digital assets. Unusual situations—including theft, abandonment or insolvency—can involve fact-specific issues that this general explanation does not resolve.
For a sale for U.S. dollars, account for basis, proceeds and costs
IRS FAQ guidance describes the calculation as the amount realized compared with adjusted basis. For a sale, amount realized includes cash received and the fair market value of services received to effect the sale, reduced by allocable digital-asset transaction costs. Such costs can include transaction or gas fees, transfer taxes and commissions. Check the IRS frequently asked questions on digital-asset transactions for the applicable details; do not assume your exchange’s displayed profit or loss is a complete tax calculation.

Keep records before you need to calculate a result
Save purchase confirmations, transaction dates and amounts, wallet transfers, sale or exchange records, and fee information. These records can help establish basis and reconcile activity across accounts or platforms.
In a January 28, 2026 update, the IRS said most broker statements for 2025 digital-asset transactions will not include basis. Taxpayers may need to calculate basis themselves, and related income, gains or losses must be reported whether or not they receive Form 1099-DA. A broker form alone may therefore not provide all the information needed. See the IRS reminders for taxpayers about digital assets.

Check what you actually hold
Directly held Bitcoin and a security-related product linked to Bitcoin are not necessarily the same investment. If you own a broker-held product rather than Bitcoin directly, check its official documents for its fees, custody arrangements and risks before making a decision. The considerations in this article do not establish product-specific terms.

Do not let a loss make you a target
Be skeptical of anyone promising guaranteed returns or a guaranteed recovery, pushing you to act immediately, or approaching you unsolicited with an investment pitch. The SEC’s Bitcoin and virtual-currency investment alert identifies warning signs including high-return guarantees, unlicensed sellers, urgency and offers that sound too good to be true.
Crypto scams can also begin through social or messaging contacts and pressure people to send crypto. Someone who has already lost money may be approached by a supposed recovery service demanding private keys, additional funds, or fees or taxes to release funds. Do not share credentials or send more crypto based on such a claim. The SEC describes these tactics in its guidance on crypto-asset scams and recovery claims targeting victims.
