You can reduce the privacy risks of a home security camera by limiting what it sees and records, securing its account and your Wi-Fi network, restricting who can view the feed, and checking how footage is stored and deleted. Exact controls vary by model, so verify the features on the specific camera before mounting or buying it.
1. Choose a privacy-conscious camera view
Decide which entryway or area needs monitoring, then frame the camera to capture only what is useful. Avoid private spaces such as bedrooms. Check whether the view also captures a neighbor’s property, a shared hallway, visitors, or other areas outside your household’s private space.

The FTC recommends considering privacy before enabling remote viewing, particularly when a camera can show a private part of the home. Recording audio or capturing other people and shared spaces can raise local legal questions; rules depend on jurisdiction and circumstances, so check applicable law before recording conversations or areas beyond your home.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Check the exact model’s privacy controls
Before mounting or purchasing a camera, review the manufacturer’s documentation and privacy policy. Do not assume that a feature exists just because another camera offers it. Use this checklist to compare models:
#1 Best Overall
- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
- Encryption: Is account information, the live feed, and stored video encrypted?
- Account security: Does the service offer multifactor authentication (MFA)?
- Remote access: Can you disable remote viewing or management?
- Sharing: Are there separate viewer roles, permissions, or schedules?
- Updates: Does the manufacturer provide firmware updates, and can they be installed automatically?
- Visibility: Are access logs available?
- Recording controls: Can you manage audio and choose continuous or event-triggered recording?
- Footage handling: Where are clips stored, how long are they retained, and how can you delete them?
Ask the manufacturer about controls the documentation does not explain. The FTC’s camera security guidance and connected-device guidance describe protections to look for; they do not guarantee that every model has them.
3. Secure the camera account and device
- Replace default credentials. Change any default username and password, including credentials used for the camera itself.
- Use a unique password. Set a hard-to-guess password for the camera account and any associated cloud account. Do not reuse a password from another service.
- Turn on MFA if available. MFA adds an identity check at login, such as a code sent to a phone or generated by an authenticator app. Choose the strongest practical option the service offers and protect your account recovery details. See CISA’s MFA guidance.
- Enable available protections. Turn on camera encryption and its firewall if those controls are offered. If you access the camera through a browser, confirm that HTTPS is used throughout the session.
- Install updates. Keep the camera firmware and the viewing app on your phone or computer current.
4. Secure the Wi-Fi network
A camera is part of your connected home, so protect the router as well as the camera. Change the router’s default administrator credentials and network name, set a strong router password, keep its software current, and confirm that its firewall is on. Use WPA2 or WPA3 Wi-Fi encryption.

If your router supports it, put cameras on a separate network from computers and printers. Separating devices can limit how easily a compromise on one device reaches others. The FTC’s guide to securing internet-connected devices covers router and device protections.
5. Limit viewing, sharing, and recording
Decide whether remote access is necessary
Turn off remote viewing or management if you do not need it. If you do use remote access, check that the feed is encrypted and allow access only through trusted accounts.

Know what is recorded and how long it stays available
Check whether audio recording is on, whether the camera records continuously or only when an event occurs, where clips are stored, how long they remain available, and how to delete them. There is no single retention schedule or storage choice that fits every camera; check the options and policies for your model.

Why account and access controls matter
In a May 2023 announcement about Ring, the FTC said its complaint alleged that account vulnerabilities enabled hackers to access stored videos, live streams, and account profiles belonging to approximately 55,000 U.S. customers. That was a case-specific figure, not an estimate of how often home cameras are compromised overall.

The proposed order described in that announcement was subject to court approval at the time; the announcement is an enforcement example, not evidence that all camera companies have the same practices.
