Back up personal files before advanced repairs.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Open the Get Help app and run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter. Microsoft says it checks for common problems and attempts to fix them. If Get Help does not resolve the failure, continue with the error code and checks below.

2. Find the error code and check basic causes
Open Windows Update history and write down the full error code shown for the failed update. Microsoft’s error guidance associates different codes with possible causes, including permissions, missing or corrupted files, low storage, stopped services, and incompatible drivers. A code is a clue, not proof of a single cause; use Microsoft’s Windows upgrade and installation error guidance to choose relevant next steps.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Confirm the PC is connected to the internet, then restart it once and try again.
- Check that there is enough free storage for the particular update. Requirements vary by update, so do not assume one universal amount.
- If the error guidance points to Windows Update services, check whether the relevant services are running rather than changing services without a reason.
- If the update appears stuck at 0% or 100%, use Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps for the matching error or symptom rather than repeatedly interrupting the process.
Microsoft’s broader Windows Update troubleshooting guide provides additional symptom-specific checks. Avoid turning off security software as a routine first step. If Microsoft’s guidance for a particular error makes that step relevant, treat it as temporary and restore protection promptly.
3. Back up files before advanced repairs
Before running system repairs or using recovery options, back up personal files. Microsoft Support’s troubleshooting article says: “Before trying any of the solutions below, make sure you back up your personal files.” See Microsoft’s Windows backup and restore guidance. A USB flash drive is one possible place to copy files if you need removable storage; it is optional and does not repair Windows Update.

4. Repair Windows system files if corruption is suspected
If the error guidance points to corrupted or missing system files, or the trouble continues after the basic checks, Microsoft documents the built-in DISM and System File Checker (SFC) tools. Open Command Prompt as administrator, run DISM first, wait for it to finish, then run SFC:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthsfc /scannow
These utilities are included with Windows; there is no separate repair product to install. DISM may need a repair source, and its source behavior can matter when Windows Update itself is not working. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions and update troubleshooting guidance for the applicable steps.

5. Choose a recovery option based on when the problem began
Recovery is a later step, not the first response to an ordinary failed update. The right choice depends on whether a specific update preceded the problem and which recovery features are available on your Windows 11 installation.
| Option | When it may fit | What it does and keeps |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall a recent update | The problem began after a particular update was installed. | Removes the selected recent update. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options for the available route and applicable conditions. |
| Fix problems using Windows Update | Windows Update or component problems persist, and the feature is available on the PC. | Reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving personal files, apps, and settings. Availability varies. See Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling the current version. |
| Reset or clean installation | Less disruptive, targeted steps have not resolved the problem and you are prepared for a broader recovery. | More disruptive than removing one update or reinstalling the current version through Windows Update. Review Microsoft’s recovery options and the effects of the specific choice before proceeding. |
Do not jump straight to a reset or clean installation when the failure followed one identifiable update; first consider whether removing that update is appropriate. For persistent problems, check Recovery for Fix problems using Windows Update. If the option is not shown, it may not be available for that installation.
