If Windows 11 goes black after you sign in, start with the reversible display checks below. If Windows still responds, restart the desktop shell; if not, use Windows Recovery Environment to test Safe Mode. A black screen can have several causes, so the symptom alone does not identify the fault.
1. Check the display and graphics connection
First rule out a display that is off or receiving the wrong output. Confirm the PC is powered on and the monitor is on. If you use a laptop, disconnect external monitors and other peripherals temporarily, then check whether the built-in screen returns.

- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. A beep or brief screen flicker may indicate that Windows received the command.
- Press Windows + P, press P again, then press Enter to cycle through display modes. The picture may be going to a different display.
These are low-impact checks. If the screen remains black, continue according to what you can still open.
2. Restart Windows Explorer if Windows responds
If you can see a cursor or the Windows security screen, the desktop shell may have stopped responding. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. If the security screen appears, choose Task Manager. When Task Manager opens directly, use Ctrl + Shift + Esc.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- In Task Manager, select Windows Explorer and choose Restart.
- If Windows Explorer is not listed, select File > Run new task, enter
explorer.exe, and press Enter.
If neither the security screen nor Task Manager is available, use Windows Recovery Environment.
3. Start Safe Mode from Windows Recovery Environment
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files, drivers, and services. If the black screen does not occur there, that narrows the investigation, but does not by itself identify one cause.

Enter Recovery Environment when you cannot reach the sign-in screen
- Hold the PC’s power button for about 10 seconds to shut it down.
- Turn it on and interrupt startup by holding the power button to shut it down again. Repeat the interrupted-start sequence two or three times until Windows enters Recovery Environment.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the restart, press F5 to choose Safe Mode with Networking.
Enter Recovery Environment from the sign-in screen
If the sign-in screen is visible, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. Then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, and press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
In Safe Mode, sign in with your account password. PIN and biometric sign-in are unavailable in this mode. Startup Settings also includes Enable low-resolution video, which uses the current video driver with a lower resolution and refresh rate; it can help if a display setting is involved.

4. Choose a driver action based on when the problem began
In Safe Mode, open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. Match the next step to the timing of the black screen:
- The issue began after a graphics-driver update: open the adapter’s properties and choose Roll Back Driver, if available. Windows may not offer rollback if it has no previous driver.
- The issue did not follow a recent driver update: try updating the graphics driver. The PC or graphics-adapter manufacturer may provide the appropriate driver for your model.
Restart Windows after changing the driver and check whether the original problem returns. Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance treats a login-time blank screen as potentially related to display-output configuration or a corrupted user profile; a visible cursor may point to a stalled Windows process or driver issue. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of a particular computer.

5. Consider System Restore only after lower-impact checks
If the black screen began recently and the earlier checks have not helped, System Restore to a point before the problem began is one option. Back up important files first if you can: Microsoft warns that some recovery options can cause data loss. Avoid starting with Reset this PC before trying the less disruptive diagnostics above. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options for recovery guidance.

6. Switch paths if Windows shows a stop code
A plain black screen after sign-in is different from a screen showing a stop code or a message that Windows ran into a problem and must restart. For that crash scenario, use Microsoft’s unexpected restart and stop-code guidance. The code and, when available, the module name can help identify the failure.
