If Windows 11 signs in but shows a black or blank screen, first check the monitor and display connections, reset the graphics driver, and cycle the display-output mode. If a cursor is visible, try restarting Windows Explorer from Task Manager. Move to Safe Mode and display-driver troubleshooting only if those checks do not restore the desktop.
Check the display and try quick resets
A black screen after login can have different causes. Microsoft says a blank screen at login may be related to a display-output setting or a corrupted user profile. A blank screen with a cursor may instead involve a stalled Windows process or a driver. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. Follow Microsoft’s black screen and blank screen troubleshooting guidance for the checks below.

- Check power and connections. Make sure the PC and monitor are on, the monitor is connected to the correct input, and display cables are seated. If possible, test with another monitor or cable to rule out a display-hardware problem. This check helps isolate the screen setup; it is not a fix for a Windows sign-in or profile problem.
- Reset the graphics driver. Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. A beep or screen flicker may indicate the reset worked.
- Cycle the display-output mode. Press Windows + P, press P again, then press Enter. This cycles through modes such as PC screen only, duplicate, and extend. Pause briefly between attempts to see whether the desktop appears on the intended display.
If the screen is blank but the cursor is visible
A visible cursor is a useful clue: try restarting Windows Explorer, the process that displays the desktop and taskbar.

Start Windows 11 in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads Windows with a limited set of files, drivers, and services. If the black screen does not happen there, that can help narrow the cause; it does not by itself identify the faulty component. Microsoft explains this diagnostic role in its Safe Mode guidance.
From the sign-in screen
- At the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
- On the recovery menu, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the PC restarts, press 5 or F5 to choose Safe Mode with Networking. Microsoft’s Startup Settings instructions describe the available startup choices.
If you cannot reach the sign-in screen
Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance describes entering the Windows Recovery Environment by interrupting startup: turn the PC on, and when Windows begins to start, hold the power button to shut it down. Repeat until recovery appears, then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart and press F5. Use this forced-shutdown route only when you cannot use the sign-in-screen route.

Check or change the display driver
In Safe Mode, open Device Manager and expand Display adapters to find the graphics device. If the problem started after a driver update, use the adapter’s Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver option if it is available. If rollback is unavailable or the timing does not fit, Microsoft lists updating or uninstalling the display driver as other troubleshooting options.

If the black screen started after an update
A blank screen after an update may be related to an incompatible driver or an incomplete update, according to Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance. If the screen remains blank after the display and Explorer checks, use Safe Mode to investigate the display driver. When the timing points to a recent system change, System Restore may also be an option.

Microsoft recommends choosing the least disruptive recovery option that fits the problem. If the issue began recently, System Restore from Safe Mode or the Recovery Environment may let you select a restore point from before it began. Review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options before proceeding: recovery choices can have different effects, and some may cause data loss. Back up important files before using an option that could affect them. Do not start with Reset this PC as a routine first step.
