Yii2 console routes run through the project’s yii script, making them suitable for maintenance tasks. Keep API access in a shared client or service, protect the bot token, and treat switching between webhooks and long polling as a change to update delivery—not as two modes that can run together.
Create the Yii2 console controller
Yii 2.0 supports console applications for background and maintenance tasks. Add a controller to the application’s console command namespace and extend yiiconsoleController. Public action methods become command routes, so an action named actionStatus() can be invoked as yii telegram/status.

Keep Telegram API-client construction in an application component or service. That gives status and configuration actions one place to handle credentials, HTTP requests, and API responses instead of duplicating those details in each action. The exact client calls depend on the Telegram library or HTTP client already used by the application.

This is an illustrative controller shape, not tested code or a claim about a particular Telegram PHP SDK. Yii console controllers also support configurable options through options(), which users can pass with syntax such as --optionName=value.

Keep the bot token out of output and logs
Store the token in protected application configuration or environment-specific secret storage. Telegram’s Bot API uses the token in the HTTPS request path, so logging full request URLs can expose it. Avoid printing the token in command output, exceptions, or application logs; report safe details such as the operation, response status, and error message instead.
Check bot and webhook status
A status action can call getMe to identify the bot and getWebhookInfo to inspect update delivery. The latter reports the configured webhook URL, pending update count, and recent delivery-error information when present. If the URL is empty, Telegram indicates that the bot is using getUpdates rather than a configured webhook.
Present those fields in a concise, readable format. An empty URL is meaningful status, not necessarily an error; a nonempty URL with pending updates or a recent delivery error gives an operator a concrete lead to investigate.
Choose one update-delivery method
Telegram offers two mutually exclusive ways to receive bot updates: long polling with getUpdates or outgoing webhooks. A bot cannot use long polling while a webhook is configured, so a maintenance command should check the current setup and make the consequences clear before changing it.
| Operational consideration | Long polling (getUpdates) |
Webhook (setWebhook) |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery model | The client requests updates and advances its offset. | Telegram sends HTTPS POST requests to the configured URL. |
| Infrastructure | Does not require a public webhook endpoint, but the polling process must remain available. | Requires a reachable HTTPS endpoint and valid certificate configuration. |
| Compatibility | Does not work while a webhook is configured. | Cannot be used simultaneously with getUpdates. |
| Operational checks | Manage offsets and update confirmation to avoid repeatedly receiving unconfirmed updates. | Use getWebhookInfo to inspect pending updates and recent delivery errors. |
Set a webhook with an explicit maintenance action
Use a dedicated action such as actionSetWebhook($url) to configure the HTTPS destination with Telegram’s setWebhook method. Validate the deployment URL before making the API request, and report success or the API’s actionable error without exposing credentials.
Telegram’s webhook guidance calls for a valid SSL certificate, supported ports, no redirects, and an exact match between the domain and the certificate’s common name. Its webhook guide states that TLS 1.2 or later is supported. Check these conditions when a webhook fails to receive updates rather than assuming the command itself is the only possible cause.
Rank #4
Because setting a webhook changes how updates reach the application, make the operation intentional: show the destination, require confirmation where appropriate, or offer a dry-run that validates inputs without calling Telegram. These are safeguards to implement in the application; they are not automatic Yii or Telegram behaviors.

When changing from webhook delivery to polling, call Telegram’s deleteWebhook method through a distinct action such as actionRemoveWebhook(). Then start or enable the long-polling worker. Do not run both delivery paths expecting Telegram to feed both at once.
Best Value
Long-polling code also needs to advance its offset correctly. Telegram’s FAQ describes using an offset equal to the last processed update_id plus one. Correct offset management prevents already-confirmed updates from being requested again.
Make failures visible to deployment tooling
Handle unsuccessful Bot API responses explicitly. Print a concise explanation that identifies the operation and a useful error, and return a nonzero command exit status for API failures so deployment scripts and operators can detect that a maintenance action did not complete. For disruptive actions, confirmation or dry-run behavior helps prevent accidental changes; choose the policy that fits the way the command is run in your environment.
Telegram retains bot updates for no longer than 24 hours while they await receipt. A maintenance command cannot recover an unlimited backlog, so investigate delivery problems promptly rather than treating pending updates as permanent storage.
