If documents stay in the Windows 11 print queue, cancel them from the printer’s queue window first. If they remain, restart the Print Spooler service. Only if that fails should you stop the spooler, delete the files in the spool folder, and start the service again. These are software steps, so no new printer, cable, or supplies are needed.
Why one stuck job blocks the whole queue
Windows 11 passes each print request to the Print Spooler service, which holds the job until the printer accepts it. Microsoft’s printer troubleshooting guidance notes that a spooler failure can leave documents stuck in the queue and leave the printer unresponsive. Jobs queued behind a failed one wait with it, which is why the whole queue looks frozen rather than a single document.

Before you start
- Turn the printer on and confirm it is connected by USB or network. Clearing the queue will not fix a printer that is offline or showing an error on its panel.
- Note the exact name of the affected printer. The Print Queue window can show a different printer from the one you expect, and cancelling jobs in the wrong queue removes nothing useful.
- Sign in with an account that can stop and start services and change files in the spool folder. The last step in this guide requires that access.
- Menu labels can differ slightly between Windows 11 builds. If a label below is not exactly where described, look for the same option nearby.
Clear the queue step by step
Step 1: Cancel the stuck jobs in Settings
Go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. Select the affected printer, then choose Open print queue. Right-click each stuck document and choose Cancel. If the queue window offers a cancel-all option, use it only when every listed job should be removed.

Check the printer name shown in the queue window before you cancel anything. If the queue is empty afterward, the problem is cleared and no further steps are needed.

Step 2: Restart the Print Spooler service
If jobs remain, press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Find Print Spooler in the list, right-click it, and choose Restart. Then return to the queue and check it again. Microsoft’s guidance for stuck queues includes restarting this service.
Step 3: Stop the spooler and clear the spool files
Use this step only when cancelling and restarting have not cleared the queue. Stopping the service first matters because a running spooler can keep spool files in use.

- In services.msc, right-click Print Spooler and choose Stop.
- Open File Explorer and enter
%WINDIR%System32spoolPRINTERSin the address bar. The variable %WINDIR% resolves to your Windows folder, usually C:Windows. - Delete the files inside the PRINTERS folder. Leave the folder itself in place.
- Return to services.msc, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Start.
- Confirm the service is set to start automatically. Double-click Print Spooler, set Startup type to Automatic on the General tab, and click OK. Microsoft’s general reset instructions include this setting.
Compare the queue-clearing options
| Method | Where you do it | What it affects | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancel jobs | Settings > Printers & scanners > Open print queue | Selected or all pending jobs for that printer | Always the first step |
| Restart Print Spooler | services.msc | The service that handles all printer jobs | Jobs remain after cancelling |
| Clear spool files | Stop Print Spooler, then %WINDIR%System32spoolPRINTERS | Every file left in the spool folder | The queue survives a service restart |
| Printer troubleshooter | Get Help app, printer troubleshooter | Diagnoses the printer and queue; it does not clear jobs by itself | The queue refills or printing still fails |
When the queue refills or printing still fails
If a new queue builds up after you clear it, the job is probably failing to reach the printer or is being sent through a faulty driver. Work through these checks in order:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Printer status: confirm the printer is not listed as offline or in an error state under Printers & scanners.
- Connection: check the USB cable or network link, and confirm the printer’s network address or port still matches the printer.
- Troubleshooter: open the Get Help app and run the printer troubleshooter, then follow its findings.
- Remove and re-add: if the printer still misbehaves, remove it from Printers & scanners and add it again.
- Duplicate or outdated drivers: under Printers & scanners, choose Related settings > Print server properties, open the Drivers tab, and remove drivers that are unnecessary or duplicated for the same printer.
- Driver source: install the latest driver for that exact printer model from its manufacturer. A generic or mismatched driver is a common cause of repeated spooler failures.
If the queue clears and stays clear after these steps, no further action is needed. If it keeps refilling after a driver change, the printer’s connection or status is the next thing to examine.
