If Windows 11’s Night light switch is grayed out, check the display driver first. Microsoft says the driver may need updating, but an update is not guaranteed to fix every case. Night light is also unavailable with certain drivers, including DisplayLink and Basic Display.
Check the Night light control and identify the symptom
Open Settings > System > Display and find Night light. A gray switch that you cannot turn on is different from Night light being enabled but making the screen look too red. The first points to a driver or compatibility issue; the second is a color-strength setting to adjust.

Microsoft’s Night light instructions say: “If your night light toggle above the link is grayed out, you may need to update your display driver.” That is troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee that updating will restore the control.
Check whether the display driver supports Night light
Microsoft lists DisplayLink and Basic Display as examples of drivers with which Night light is unavailable. These are examples, not a complete list of every potentially incompatible driver. To check the adapter Windows is using, open Device Manager > Display adapters and inspect the listed adapter or adapters.

If the active driver is DisplayLink or Basic Display, the feature may remain unavailable while that driver is in use. Check the PC or display adapter maker’s official support channel for a supported driver option; do not assume that a generic update or replacement will make Night light compatible. Microsoft’s Night light guidance documents the compatibility limitation.
Update the display driver through a supported route
- Try Windows’ driver update route: open Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click the relevant adapter, choose Update driver, and follow the available prompts.
- Check the device maker’s support site if needed: Microsoft notes that the PC or display adapter manufacturer may provide the latest driver. Use a driver intended for your specific device and Windows installation.
- Return to the control: open Settings > System > Display and check whether Night light is now available.
Microsoft’s display and color instructions point to driver updating when the switch is grayed out. If it remains unavailable, the cited guidance does not establish a single cause or a universal fix. Avoid treating registry edits, third-party driver-updater utilities, or reinstalling Windows as first-line remedies for this symptom.

Turn Night light on and configure it if the control returns
Once the switch is available, turn it on from Settings > System > Display. Open Night light settings to adjust Strength or schedule it. Windows offers Sunset to sunrise and Set hours scheduling options, as described in Microsoft’s Night light instructions.
If Night light turns on but the screen looks too red
This is a different problem from a grayed-out switch. On HDR-capable devices, Night light can produce an overly red tint depending on its strength. Lower the Strength setting, or turn Night light off if that better suits the display. Microsoft describes this behavior in its HDR settings guidance.
