Apple’s 2026 announcements establish four Mac families with M5- and M6-series configurations: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and Mac Studio. They do not establish a complete worldwide list of every Mac Apple currently sells, or a full history of four chip generations. Here is what the announcements do confirm, how the configurations differ, and what to consider when choosing among them. Product details and U.S. prices below reflect Apple announcements through October 7, 2026.
Which Mac configurations do Apple’s 2026 announcements establish?
The March 11 and September 22, 2026 announcements name the following configurations. Apple said the new Mac mini and Mac Studio became available September 22. These announcements establish specific products, not a definitive inventory of every model still available in every country.

The Mac mini and Mac Studio prices are U.S. starting prices announced September 22, 2026. Apple also listed U.S. education starting prices of $799 for Mac mini with M6, $1,599 for Mac mini with M5 Pro, $2,299 for Mac Studio with M5 Max, and $5,099 for Mac Studio with M5 Ultra. Prices and configurations can change, so check the Apple Store for your country before buying.
Apple’s dynamic Mac comparison page includes older model references and unresolved product and price placeholders in its extracted content. It therefore does not settle whether these announced configurations are the complete current storefront lineup worldwide.

How do the four Mac families differ?
MacBook Air: a portable laptop in two sizes
The announced M5 Air comes in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, with 512GB starting storage. Choose between the sizes based on the screen area you want to carry: the 15-inch model offers a larger built-in display, while the 13-inch model is the smaller option. The announcement does not establish a detailed performance comparison between the two sizes.
MacBook Pro: a laptop with Pro and Max chip tiers
The M5 Pro and M5 Max options are available in 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro configurations. Apple specifies 1TB starting storage for M5 Pro and 2TB for M5 Max. Within this family, the relevant trade-offs include chip tier, memory capacity, graphics needs, display size, and budget; the starting storage figures are not a guarantee that every configuration has the same capacity.

Mac mini: compact desktop options
Apple’s September announcement names Mac mini configurations with M6 and M5 Pro. The M6 is the lower-priced announced option; M5 Pro is the higher-priced option. The announcement positions M6 for general use and describes M5 Pro as suited to more demanding creative and technical projects. As a desktop, Mac mini is appropriate when you do not need a built-in laptop display.

Mac Studio is announced with M5 Max or M5 Ultra. Apple positions the family for demanding creative, technical, and local AI workloads. The Ultra configuration has substantially higher published maximum memory and bandwidth figures than the Pro and Max configurations described below, but those ceilings alone do not determine whether a particular project needs it.

What do M6, M5 Pro, M5 Max, and M5 Ultra specify?
The figures in this table are Apple’s published maximum specifications, not a promise that every configuration includes the maximum. They are also not a direct benchmark across unlike systems.
| Chip | Apple-published specifications | Mac configuration named in the announcements |
|---|---|---|
| M6 | 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, dual 16-core Neural Engine, up to 170GB/s unified memory bandwidth; Apple calls it its first 2nm chip | Mac mini |
| M5 Pro | Up to 18-core CPU, up to 20-core GPU, up to 64GB unified memory, up to 307GB/s bandwidth | MacBook Pro and Mac mini |
| M5 Max | 18-core CPU, up to 40-core GPU, up to 128GB unified memory, up to 614GB/s bandwidth | MacBook Pro and Mac Studio |
| M5 Ultra | Up to 36-core CPU, up to 80-core GPU, up to 512GB unified memory, 1.2TB/s bandwidth | Mac Studio |
What Pro, Max, and Ultra mean for choosing
Apple describes M5 Pro and M5 Max as using Fusion Architecture, connecting two dies into one system on a chip. Both also have Neural Accelerators in each GPU core. In the published specifications, Max raises the maximum GPU core count, unified memory capacity, and memory bandwidth over Pro. M5 Ultra uses a quad-die architecture and has higher published ceilings still, including up to 512GB unified memory and 1.2TB/s bandwidth.

Those differences matter most when the workload can use more graphics capacity, memory, or bandwidth—for example, demanding creative and technical work or local AI tasks. For everyday work, selecting the top tier simply because its specifications are larger may not justify its higher starting price. Also check the exact memory and storage configuration: a chip family’s maximum is not the same as the specification of every machine sold with that chip.

- For Mac mini with M6, Apple claims up to 4x faster AI performance than a prior-generation M4 Mac mini configured with a 10-core CPU and GPU, 32GB unified memory, and a 2TB SSD. Apple also claims 40 percent faster CPU performance against its specified prior-generation comparison.
- For Mac Studio, Apple claims up to 4.3x faster AI performance and up to 1.8x faster graphics versus a prior M3 Ultra Mac Studio configuration.
- Apple says M5 Ultra’s 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth is 50 percent more than M3 Ultra.
- For M5 Pro and M5 Max, Apple claims up to 35 percent higher graphics performance in ray-tracing apps than M4 Pro and M4 Max, respectively. The separate announcement gives up to 30 percent ray-tracing graphics uplift for M5 Max versus M4 Max; treat that as Apple’s claim, not an independently reproduced result.
- Apple’s MacBook Pro announcement claims up to 4x AI performance over the previous generation and up to 8x over M1 models. The announcement’s footnotes define the comparisons; the multipliers alone do not identify a universal workload result.
These comparisons use different prior-generation systems and measures. They can indicate what Apple chose to highlight, but they do not show how every app, configuration, or user workload will perform.
Does “four chip generations behind them” describe Apple’s current Mac lineup?
Not on the evidence established by these announcements. They provide detailed information about M5 and M6, and selected comparisons against M3- and M4-based machines. They do not provide a complete generation-by-generation history covering M2, M3, M4, and M5, nor do they establish that Apple currently sells Macs from all four of those generations.
So the phrase “four chip generations” should not be read as a verified count of generations currently on sale or as a complete timeline. The products and specifications above are the current configurations identified in the cited 2026 announcements; the historical scope remains unresolved.

Quick Recap
How should you narrow down a choice?
- Decide whether you need a laptop. MacBook Air and MacBook Pro include a display and are portable. Mac mini and Mac Studio are desktops, so plan around your external display and desk setup.
- Set the workload and budget before choosing a chip tier. Compare the starting prices where Apple announced them, then weigh whether your actual work needs the higher CPU/GPU, memory, or bandwidth ceilings.
- Check memory and storage on the exact configuration. Apple’s maximum specifications and the laptop starting-storage figures describe different things; verify the selected model’s actual build before purchase.
- Account for display and connection needs. For a desktop, include the display, storage, and any hub or connectivity requirements in your setup decision. Confirm compatibility for the exact Mac and accessory models rather than assuming all configurations support the same arrangement.
- Verify local availability and price. The desktop prices above are U.S. announcement prices; Apple’s lineup and prices can vary by market and change over time.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
