What to Do When the Windows 11 Print Spooler Won’t Start

Start with Windows 11’s Get Help printer troubleshooter. If that does not fix printing, reset the spooler and queue, then check the printer driver or connection.

If the Windows 11 Print Spooler won’t start, begin with the printer troubleshooter in the Get Help app. If printing still fails, stop the service, delete the queued print files, and start the service again. These steps address a service or queue problem before you move on to printer drivers or connectivity.

1. Run the Windows 11 printer troubleshooter

Microsoft recommends starting with the automated printer troubleshooter in Get Help. Open the Windows printer troubleshooting guide and follow its instructions to launch the troubleshooter. Let its checks finish, then try printing again.

The Print Spooler manages print jobs; when it fails, jobs may remain queued and printing can stop. The troubleshooter is the least disruptive first step because it checks for common printer problems without asking you to delete pending jobs.

2. Reset the spooler and clear stuck jobs

Resetting the queue removes pending print jobs. If you need a copy of a job, save or print it again later. Delete only the files inside the queue folder—not the folder itself—and stop the service before deleting them.

  1. Search for Services from the taskbar and open the Services app.
  2. Find and open Print Spooler. In its properties, select Stop.
  3. In File Explorer’s address bar or taskbar search, open %WINDIR%system32spoolprinters.
  4. Delete the files inside the printers folder. Leave the folder in place.
  5. Return to the Print Spooler properties in Services. Select Start, set Startup type to Automatic, then apply the change.
  6. Try printing again.

This follows Microsoft’s published printer reset procedure. If you cannot stop or start the service, you may need an administrator account.

3. Review the printer driver

If the spooler fails again, or the queue reset does not help, check for old, unnecessary, or duplicate printer entries. Open Device Manager and review Print queues or Printers. Microsoft recommends removing drivers that are no longer needed and installing the current driver for your exact printer model from its manufacturer.

Do not assume a driver is the cause just because the service failed. If you update one, use the manufacturer’s support or driver-download page for the precise model; a generic driver may not match your printer.

4. If Print Spooler still will not stay running

Try starting the service again through Services and rerun the printer troubleshooter. If this is a work or school PC, ask the administrator whether service settings or Group Policy are centrally managed rather than changing permissions yourself.

Microsoft Learn’s deeper spooler troubleshooting guidance covers supported Windows Server versions, not Windows 11. It identifies system instability or insufficient resources, policy settings, printer drivers, and antivirus interference as areas an administrator may investigate. These are possibilities from the Windows Server guidance, not confirmed explanations for every Windows 11 failure.

For that Windows Server troubleshooting scenario, Microsoft documents these commands in an elevated shell:

It also documents this PowerShell command:

Restart-Service -Name spooler

Those commands are included as administrator-oriented references, not as a Windows 11-specific fix. If a command reports “Access is denied,” verify that the shell is elevated or ask an administrator to handle it. Avoid broad permission changes without a specific diagnosis.

5. Tell a service failure from a connection problem

If Print Spooler is running but Windows cannot find or communicate with the printer, troubleshoot recognition and connectivity instead. Check the USB cable or the printer’s wireless or Bluetooth connection, as appropriate, then follow Microsoft’s guidance for a printer Windows cannot find. A printer shown as offline is a different problem from a Print Spooler service that will not start.

When to investigate the printer itself

The first steps are Windows diagnostics, service controls, queue cleanup, and driver maintenance; they do not establish that the printer needs replacement. Check hardware only if there are separate signs of a device or connection fault—for example, a disconnected cable or a printer that cannot connect over its network.
