A real-time location system (RTLS) is a wireless system that estimates the position of tagged items within a defined area at or near real time. It uses radio-link measurements collected by tags and receiving infrastructure; the term describes a system capability, not a single radio technology or device.
What is a real-time location system?
The IEC summary of ISO/IEC 24730-1:2006 defines RTLS as wireless systems able to locate an item’s position in a defined space at a point in time that is real time or close to it. The standard describes deriving position from physical properties of a radio link.

An RTLS typically has three parts: a tag or transmitter associated with the item, fixed readers or other receiving infrastructure, and software that turns radio measurements into location information. A tag may be attached to equipment, carried by a person, or otherwise associated with the thing being located. The standard’s API description concerns software applications locating assets with RTLS transmitters attached; the later ISO/IEC 24730-1:2014 record also describes software access to RTLS infrastructure.
How does RTLS work?
- A tag transmits a radio signal. The tag is associated with the asset or person whose position is needed.
- Readers receive the signal. Fixed infrastructure measures properties of the radio link, such as signal strength or the time and angle at which a signal arrives.
- Software estimates the location. A location engine or connected application interprets those measurements and reports a position or location event.
Standards material lists time of arrival or time-of-flight ranging, received-signal-strength triangulation, time difference of arrival (TDoA), and angle of arrival (AoA) as possible location methods. The suitable method depends on the system and deployment; “real time” alone does not specify a particular precision or update rate.

What affects RTLS accuracy and update frequency?
Performance depends on the air-interface standard, system design, receiving infrastructure, and environment. For example, IEC’s summary of ISO/IEC 24730-2:2006 describes a 2.4 GHz system for controlled areas such as warehouses, campuses, and airports. It specifies accuracy of 3 m or less for that system and describes approximate location with frequent updates, such as several times a minute. Those details apply to the standard’s described system; they are not a general accuracy promise for all RTLS products or sites.
When evaluating a vendor’s accuracy or update-rate claim, check whether it applies to the intended location, infrastructure layout, and operating conditions. A specification from one standard or controlled-area example cannot establish how another deployment will perform.

RTLS standards and technology examples
RTLS is not synonymous with one wireless technology. The ISO/IEC 24730 series includes air-interface standards as well as software access to RTLS infrastructure. These examples illustrate specific standards, not a universal ranking of radio technologies.

|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz DSSS | ISO/IEC 24730-2:2006 describes a networked location system for controlled areas, with approximate location and frequent updates. Its stated accuracy is 3 m or less for that system, not RTLS generally. IEC standard record |
| Low-rate UWB | ISO/IEC 24730-61:2013 supports one-directional simplex communication between readers and tags and is intended for low-data-rate connectivity where very low battery consumption is important. ISO reports this edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2024 and remains current. ISO standard record |
| High-rate UWB | ISO/IEC 24730-62:2013 describes one-way TDoA blink communication and optional two-way ranging. Its mandatory default operating mode is intended to support interoperability between tags and infrastructure from different manufacturers. IEC standard record |
What is the difference between RFID and RTLS?
Some RTLS implementations use radio-frequency identification (RFID) technologies, but not every RFID system continuously estimates an item’s position. The ISO/IEC 24730-22:2012 preview distinguishes RTLS location methods from event-based passage detection and homing-beacon approaches, describing the latter as “really RFID rather than RTLS.” A checkpoint system can register that an item passed a reader without providing ongoing location within the area.
