Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Windows says “Automatic Startup Repair Can’t Repair Your PC,” the message means that Startup Repair did not resolve the startup problem; it does not identify the cause. Use the recovery option that fits what happened before the failure, and protect important files before attempting recovery whenever possible.
What the Startup Repair message means
Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that runs in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and attempts to fix certain problems that prevent Windows from starting. A message such as “Startup Repair couldn’t repair your PC” is a failed repair attempt, not a diagnosis. An update, a driver or software change, an abrupt shutdown, hardware changes, or other startup problems may be involved.

Microsoft documents the Startup Repair log at %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. It can help identify issues Startup Repair investigated, but reading it does not by itself establish which repair is safe or appropriate. Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions describe the tool and its recovery path.

- Recall whether the problem began after a Windows update, driver or software installation, sudden power loss, or hardware change. This history can help you choose a targeted recovery option.
- If you can still access important files, back them up before recovery. If the files are inaccessible and irreplaceable, prioritize protecting access to them before performing operations that change the disk.
- Have the BitLocker recovery key available if the device is encrypted. WinRE may request it for Startup Repair and other recovery options.
Run Startup Repair from WinRE
If you can reach the recovery menu, Microsoft’s documented route is:
#1 Best Overall
- 1. COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS 11, 10, 8.1 & 7 Designed for compatible 64-bit PCs and laptops that support USB booting. Works with Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 installation and recovery options.
- 2. INSTALL, REINSTALL & REPAIR Provides access to installation and recovery options for startup failures, boot errors, system crashes, failed updates, system repair and reinstallation. Results depend on the condition of the computer and the cause of the problem.
- 3. READY-TO-USE BOOTABLE USB Reusable installation and recovery media that helps eliminate the need to download large system files or create bootable media yourself. Insert the USB drive, open the computer’s boot menu and select the appropriate installation or recovery option.
- 4. HELP KEEP OLDER PCS USEFUL Refresh, reinstall or maintain a compatible older computer before deciding whether replacement is necessary. Suitable for home computers, office workstations, PC enthusiasts and technicians who regularly work with supported systems.
- 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted, then provide the BitLocker recovery key if requested.
- Select Restart and check whether Windows starts.
If Startup Repair has already failed and returns the same message, move on to an option that matches the recent change or symptom rather than repeating the same attempt without new information. See Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment guidance if you need help reaching WinRE.
If you cannot reach WinRE, use Windows installation media to open repair tools
If the PC will not start its built-in recovery tools and you do not have a recovery drive or repair disc, Microsoft documents creating Windows installation media on another working PC. This is a way to reach repair tools; you do not need to start installing Windows if your immediate goal is recovery.
- On a working PC, create Windows installation media using Microsoft’s instructions.
- Connect the media to the affected PC and turn it on. A USB flash drive can serve as installation media; Microsoft’s general instructions do not specify a particular retail product or capacity.
- Choose the language and other preferences in Windows Setup.
- Select Repair my PC to enter WinRE, then choose the recovery option suited to the problem.
If Windows Setup does not appear, the PC may not be configured to start from the connected drive. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for changing the boot order or selecting a boot device. Microsoft’s WinRE instructions explain the installation-media route.
Choose a recovery option based on what happened
Recovery options differ in what they undo and what they keep. Check the prompts for your Windows version and device before confirming an operation. Microsoft recommends backing up important files first when possible; its Windows recovery options guide describes availability and effects.
| Option | When it may fit | Effect on files, apps, and settings |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall a recent update | The startup failure began after a Windows update. | Microsoft says this option does not affect personal files or apps, although some updates cannot be removed. |
| System Restore | A recent system change may be responsible and a suitable restore point is available. | Rolls back system files and settings, but not personal files. Available in Windows 10 and Windows 11. |
| Point-in-time restore | A supported Windows 11 device running version 24H2 or later offers this option and a recent automatic restore point is appropriate. | Can roll back apps, settings, and personal files to that restore point. Unlike System Restore, it can affect personal files. |
| Reset this PC | Less disruptive recovery options have not resolved the problem and you want Windows reinstalled with the option to keep or remove personal files. | Apps and settings are removed. The choice to keep personal files does not preserve installed apps or settings. |
| Reinstall Windows from installation media | You have decided a full reinstall is necessary and understand its consequences. | May remove everything. A manufacturer’s recovery image typically includes hardware-specific drivers and factory apps that generic Microsoft installation media might omit. |
If the problem followed an update
Try uninstalling the recent update from WinRE’s advanced recovery options. If Windows does not offer removal of that update, choose another option based on your situation rather than assuming the update can always be rolled back.

If a system change may have caused it
System Restore can return system files and settings to an earlier restore point without rolling back personal files. In supported circumstances, Point-in-time restore on Windows 11 version 24H2 or later reaches further: it may roll back apps, settings, and personal files. Read the confirmation screens carefully so you know which rollback is being offered.
If you are considering a reset or reinstall
Reset this PC reinstalls Windows and lets you choose whether to keep or remove personal files, but it removes apps and settings. Reinstalling from installation media can remove everything. If the exact PC model’s recovery image is available, it may include drivers and factory apps not included in generic Microsoft media.
Use SrtTrail.txt and boot commands as diagnostic tools
The Startup Repair log is located at %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. The %windir% path refers to the Windows directory; in recovery environments, drive letters may differ from those used when Windows is running. A log entry should be interpreted in context, not treated as a universal instruction to run a particular command.
Microsoft’s boot troubleshooting guidance covers distinct failures involving the boot loader, Boot Configuration Data (BCD), and other startup components. The right steps depend on the failure type. In some cases, damage to the boot manager, BCD, or relevant disk metadata can also prevent automatic access to WinRE. Avoid copying boot-record, partition, registry, or disk-repair commands from a generic checklist without first identifying the Windows installation and the specific failure. If you suspect a storage device is failing or cannot risk losing data, seek data-recovery or device-support help before write operations.
When to contact IT or the PC manufacturer
For a work- or school-managed PC, contact your IT department if the available recovery options do not work. For a personal PC, the manufacturer can advise on model-specific recovery procedures, boot-device settings, and recovery media. Firmware labels and key sequences vary by model, so use the instructions for your exact computer.
