First verify that the shortfall is real: check the inverter or production meter, confirm that monitoring data are current, and compare generation with what your system should have produced under the same weather and temperature conditions. If the gap remains, look for shading, soiling, snow, downtime, equipment damage, or wiring faults, then have persistent or hazardous problems handled by the installer, manufacturer, or a qualified photovoltaic (PV) operations and maintenance professional.
Start by proving the shortfall is real
A single low day does not establish a panel problem. Cloud cover, seasonal sun angles, heat, snow, and a temporary monitoring interruption can all make the graph look worse than the array’s actual performance. Begin with the system’s own production data rather than a generic panel rating, a neighbor’s array, or the amount shown on a utility bill.

Check whether the data are current
Open the monitoring portal and note the latest timestamp. Then check the inverter display, its status lights, and the production meter if one is installed. A dashboard that stopped communicating may show no new generation even while the array is operating. Conversely, an inverter alarm or meter showing zero output can indicate a real outage.
Review daily, monthly, and historical production. A utility bill is not a generation meter: it also reflects household consumption, export rules, billing-period boundaries, and possibly battery charging and discharging. Use the PV production measurement when diagnosing how much the array generated.

Use an equivalent comparison period
Compare actual production with an expected-production estimate for the same dates. The comparison should account for local solar resource, measured temperature, array orientation, system age, and known system losses. A winter month should be compared with an appropriate winter baseline, not with a summer month.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program describes this as a performance-ratio approach: actual production divided by modeled production for the selected period, with the modeled output based on the same solar-resource and temperature data. The quality of the result depends on the model’s assumptions, so keep those assumptions with the number.
Why an array can produce less
Low output alone cannot identify a single cause. Several conditions can overlap, and the same symptom—such as a lower monthly total—can arise from weather, equipment downtime, or a reporting error.

Weather and available sunlight
Persistent clouds, storms, smoke, snow cover, and unusually short winter days reduce the sunlight reaching modules. High module temperature also lowers electrical efficiency. DOE’s photovoltaic energy-yield guidance identifies solar availability, operating temperature, shading, and soiling as factors that affect delivered energy.
Weather explains a temporary departure when the measured solar resource was also below normal. It does not explain a continuing decline after comparable sunny periods unless the local conditions themselves have changed.
New or seasonal shading
Trees grow, nearby construction changes, roof equipment is added, and the sun’s seasonal path shifts. Partial shade on only part of an array can reduce energy from an entire string, depending on the system’s electrical design. Compare the current shade pattern with installation photographs or earlier observations, paying attention to morning and late-afternoon shadows.
Shade observations guide an investigation but do not prove that a module or inverter has failed. A qualified technician can measure string behavior and determine whether redesign, trimming, or another remedy is appropriate.

Only clean surfaces that are safely accessible and whose manufacturer permits cleaning. Roof work introduces fall and electrical hazards; do not climb onto a roof or spray, scrub, or use abrasive tools without following the equipment instructions and local safety requirements. A brush cannot fix shading, an inverter fault, weather variation, or a wiring problem.
System downtime and inverter faults
Inverters convert array output to usable alternating current and are a major source of downtime and maintenance events. An alarm, fault code, tripped protection device, or long period of zero production can account for a large monthly loss even when the modules themselves are intact.
Record the exact message and the time it began. Do not open an inverter, disconnect conductors, bypass protection, or repeatedly reset a fault without professional direction. Solar circuits can remain energized in daylight, and incorrect intervention can create shock, fire, equipment, or warranty risks.
Module damage and wiring problems
Hail, wind, falling branches, water intrusion, animal activity, connector failures, and damaged cables can reduce or interrupt production. Look from the ground for cracked glass, lifted frames, burn marks, loose conduit, or storm debris. Do not touch damaged equipment or exposed conductors.
Some electrical faults are not visible. A technician may need string-current measurements, insulation tests, thermal inspection, or inverter diagnostics to locate them. Treat visible damage, repeated protective trips, and unexplained zero-output periods as service issues rather than cleaning tasks.
Gradual aging
Modules normally lose some capability over time, but degradation is gradual and varies by technology, climate, installation, and measurement method. Two DOE-published figures provide context without serving as a personal forecast:
| Figure | Source and scope | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| About 0.5% module-efficiency degradation per year | DOE Federal Energy Management Program longevity guidance, page accessed in 2026 | A general description of unavoidable module-efficiency decline; not a guarantee for an individual array |
| Around 0.75% median performance loss per year | DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office summary of NREL PV Fleet findings, page accessed in 2026 | A fleet-level median from an analysis of nearly 19,000 inverters; not a required rate for every household system |
Do not use either percentage to explain a sudden collapse. A sharp change is more consistent with a reporting interruption, shading event, soiling, downtime, or equipment fault and deserves investigation.

Compare matching intervals
Select a period long enough to smooth out individual cloudy days—often several weeks or a full month—and compare it with the system’s modeled expectation for the same dates. Keep the weather and temperature inputs, age assumptions, and modeled-loss assumptions visible. If the installer’s report uses a performance ratio, confirm that actual and modeled values cover the same interval.
-
Check for changed conditions
From a safe location, inspect for new shade, snow, heavy dirt, leaves, storm debris, or roof work. Compare today’s observations with installation records. Do not infer a failed component merely from a dirty appearance or a lower total.
-
Review downtime and service history
Mark every period when the inverter was offline, communications were interrupted, or maintenance occurred. A short outage can explain a monthly gap; repeated outages indicate a reliability problem. Keep prior repair reports and replacement dates because they help separate a new event from an old one.

Escalate the right issue
Contact the original installer or equipment manufacturer for warranty questions, proprietary alarms, and installation-specific support. For an older system or an unavailable installer, use a qualified PV O&M provider. Ask for a written diagnosis that identifies the evidence, affected components, expected production impact, proposed work, qualifications, warranty consequences, and response timing.
How to judge an installer report or repair proposal
Two reports can quote different “expected” outputs because they use different weather files, temperatures, degradation assumptions, or loss factors. Compare the underlying method, not just the headline percentage.
| Question | What a sound assessment should show |
|---|---|
| Are the periods equivalent? | Actual and modeled production use the same start and end dates and the same operating availability. |
| What weather was used? | Measured or clearly identified solar-resource and temperature data for the site or a defensible nearby reference. |
| Was the system available? | Inverter downtime, communication outages, curtailment, and maintenance periods are separated from module performance. |
| How is age handled? | The model states its degradation assumption instead of treating a new-system rating as a current expectation. |
| Were observable losses included? | Shade, soiling, snow, orientation, temperature, and other known losses are identified or measured. |
| Is the repair justified? | The proposal links the work to test results or documented faults and explains scope, qualifications, warranty effects, and timing. |
DOE’s 2022 assessment of 75 federal PV systems illustrates why this matters: it used system characteristics and coincident weather data in the System Advisor Model before comparing modeled and measured generation. That method is more meaningful than comparing raw kilowatt-hours from different locations or differently sized systems.
Safety and warranty boundaries
- Stay on the observation side of the system. Read displays, review portals, and photograph conditions from a safe location; leave energized equipment and roof access to trained personnel.
- Preserve evidence. Save monitoring screenshots, dates, error messages, meter readings, weather notes, installation documents, warranties, invoices, and service records.
- Follow manufacturer instructions. Unauthorized resets, disassembly, pressure washing, abrasive cleaning, or connector work can worsen damage and complicate a warranty claim.
- Use qualified help for electrical symptoms. Inverter faults, suspected wiring problems, visible module damage, repeated shutdowns, and persistent underperformance require trained O&M staff or a qualified contractor.
When to call for service immediately
Arrange prompt professional help if the inverter reports a recurring fault, the array remains at zero during daylight, protective devices trip repeatedly, you see cracked modules or burn marks, wiring appears loose or damaged, or a storm was followed by a sharp output change. For a slower decline without visible damage, complete the data and comparison checks first, then request an inspection if the gap persists.

The most useful service conversation is specific: “Production was 420 kWh from May 1–31, the model expected 560 kWh using the stated weather data, and the inverter reported fault code X from May 14–16.” That gives the technician a period, a benchmark, and an observable event instead of an impression based only on a bill.
The decision rule
Use context before conclusions. If production matches the weather-adjusted expectation, no repair is indicated even when a cloudy month looks disappointing. If monitoring alone is stale, restore communications and verify generation at the inverter or meter. If shading, soiling, or snow is visible, address it only when safe and permitted. If the gap survives those checks—or equipment faults, damage, or wiring concerns are present—stop experimenting and obtain a qualified diagnosis supported by measurements and records.
