If shared Starlink internet is slow or keeps dropping, first check whether the problem affects one device or every device. One affected device usually points to its Wi‑Fi link, distance from the router, VPN, or cable; if all devices are affected, check Starlink’s service status, dish and cables, time-of-day patterns, and any extra network equipment.
First, find out whether the problem is Wi‑Fi or the Starlink connection
Run Starlink’s Advanced Speed Test in the app. It separates three links: Router → Internet, Device → Router, and Device → Internet. If the device-to-router result is weak while the router-to-internet result is stronger, focus on local Wi‑Fi or the device. If the router-to-internet result is also poor, investigate the Starlink connection, service conditions, or equipment upstream of the device. The test paths are diagnostic clues, not a guarantee of a particular speed. See Starlink’s slow-speed guidance.

For a useful comparison, test on 5 GHz near the Starlink router. If you use a third-party router, temporarily remove it and other switches or mesh nodes, then compare using Starlink equipment alone. Starlink also suggests connecting a computer by Ethernet directly to the Starlink power supply where the hardware supports it. If performance improves with the extra equipment removed, investigate that router, node, switch, or its setup; Starlink notes that support for non-Starlink equipment is limited.

Test close to the router and check the band
Move the affected device near the router and compare it with another device in the same location. Starlink describes 2.4 GHz as longer-range but slower, and 5 GHz as faster but most effective close to the router. If needed, Starlink’s app can split the Wi‑Fi bands so you can select between them; app labels and paths may vary by router generation. Moving a device to a different band may improve its local Wi‑Fi link, but does not increase the total capacity of the Starlink service.
#1 Best Overall
- 🔌 Advanced Connectivity: Supports both wired (Ethernet) and wireless setup to expand your Starlink mesh network seamlessly.
- 🧩 Easy Integration: Works with your existing Starlink system (excluding Gen 1); ideal for adding extra mesh nodes.
- 🛠️ Versatile Installation: Mount on the wall or place on a table. Includes power supply, mounting stand, screws, and drywall anchors.
- 📶 Optimized Performance: Best placed within two rooms of the main router; avoid obstructions like concrete walls and metal appliances.
- 📱 Mesh Compatibility: Compatible with Starlink Gen 2 Router, Starlink Gen 3 Router, Starlink Mini Router, and Starlink Mini Kit. Not compatible for wireless mesh networking with Starlink Gen 1 routers or third-party mesh systems.
Rule out a device setting or wired link
- Briefly turn off the device’s VPN for a comparison, or test another device without a VPN enabled.
- If the device uses Ethernet, inspect the cable and connectors for damage. Starlink says cables below Cat5e may limit speed and recommends Cat5e or higher.
- Compare the same device on Wi‑Fi and Ethernet, if both are available. A better result on Ethernet suggests the wireless link deserves attention.
If every device is slow or disconnecting
Check the Starlink app and installation
Look in the Starlink app for service alerts, obstructions, or hardware issues. Confirm that the service is being used at the location on the account; Starlink notes that mobile service may be slower. Check the dish face for heavy dirt, debris, or anything covering it. Review router placement and installation, too: indoor Wi‑Fi can be weakened by distance and thick walls even when the dish’s internet feed is working normally. See Starlink’s intermittent-connection guidance.
Inspect cables and connections
For dropouts, follow the cable route and look for nicks, cuts, pinching in a doorway or window, or hard bends. Check connectors and ports for visible damage or debris. Avoid repeatedly disconnecting equipment if a connector appears damaged; document what you find and contact support.

Compare busy and quieter periods
Starlink says speeds can temporarily fall during peak network use. Its help page describes peak time as typically 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. local time, while noting that actual experience varies. Run comparable tests at a busy and a quieter time using the same device and location; Starlink’s third-party-router guidance also recommends an off-peak test against the speeds expected for the service plan.

Choose a fix that matches the fault
| What the checks suggest | Reasonable next step | What it does not fix |
|---|---|---|
| Starlink internet test is healthy, but Wi‑Fi is weak in distant rooms | Improve router placement or consider a compatible Starlink mesh node or extender. Starlink says these may help in large homes or homes with thick walls; verify compatibility with your router generation. | It improves indoor coverage, not satellite capacity or an upstream service problem. |
| A cable is damaged or below Cat5e | Replace it with a suitable Cat5e-or-better cable and test again. | It will not resolve a dish obstruction or weak Wi‑Fi coverage elsewhere. |
| Performance improves after removing third-party network gear | Check that device’s configuration, placement, and connections. Third-party router support and setup depend on the specific kit. | It does not establish that the Starlink service itself is faster at other times or locations. |
| Visitors need internet but should not reach household devices | Use Starlink Guest Wi‑Fi if available; at least one Starlink network must remain in Default mode. | Guest mode isolates guest devices from each other and the owner’s local devices; it is not a bandwidth-control or speed-boost feature. |
Starlink supports third-party routers for many kits, but setup and bypass behavior vary. Bypass mode disables the Starlink router’s Wi‑Fi, and leaving bypass mode requires a factory reset. Do not enable it casually if the household relies on the Starlink router’s wireless network. Check the instructions for the exact kit before changing modes. See Starlink’s third-party router guidance and bypass-mode guidance.

If the tests remain outside the expected range for your plan or the checks do not improve performance, submit a support ticket through the Starlink app. Include speed-test screenshots and the time of each test. For intermittent problems, note which devices were affected, when it happened, weather conditions, and the connected network equipment; mention relevant router placement or cable condition as well. Phone support eligibility and options vary by country and customer situation, so check the current in-app guidance.
