Then power the console off, reseat the card, and inspect the card and slot. Format only as a later step, after backing up screenshots and videos, because formatting erases the card.
Check whether the card is compatible
Nintendo Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards only, with capacities up to 2TB, and Nintendo says a system update over the internet is required the first time you use one. See Nintendo’s microSD card and microSD Express compatibility guidance for the supported card type and first-use requirement.

An ordinary microSD card from the original Nintendo Switch is not a substitute for Switch 2 game storage: it cannot save or load Switch 2 digital games or their save data. It can still be used to import screenshots and videos to Switch 2 system memory. If your card is an ordinary microSD card, look for a microSD Express card and check its Express marking and stated capacity before buying; Nintendo sells these cards separately and does not endorse a particular retail model.
Safely remove and reseat the card
- Turn the console off. Hold the POWER button for at least three seconds, select Power Options, then Power Off. Do not remove the card while the console is on.
- Remove the card. Gently press it in until it clicks, then slide it out.
- Check the card type and condition. Confirm it is microSD Express, then look at its connectors for visible dirt or debris.
- Check the console slot. Look for visible dirt or debris without forcing anything into the slot. Nintendo notes that visible contamination may mean the card needs replacement and the console needs service.
- Reinsert the card. Slide it in gently until it clicks into place, then turn on the console and check whether it is recognized.
If this is the first time the card has been used with the console, make sure the required internet system update is complete. Nintendo states that the update is required for first use; it does not guarantee that updating will fix a card that remains undetected.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Format only after backing up the card
If the card is compatible and reseating it has not helped, formatting is a later troubleshooting option. Before proceeding, copy any screenshots and videos you want to keep to a computer. Formatting deletes the information on the card, and Nintendo warns that it cannot be recovered.
- On the console, open System Settings > System > Formatting Options > Format microSD Card.
- Follow the instructions shown on your console. Menu wording may vary by software version.
- After formatting, check whether the console recognizes the card.
Downloaded software stored on the card can be redownloaded using the same Nintendo Account that purchased it. Save data is stored in the console’s system memory, not on the microSD card, and is not erased by formatting the card. Nintendo’s formatting instructions explain these consequences and the console menu path.

Know when the card or console needs service
- One compatible card still is not detected after formatting: Replace the card.
- More than one microSD Express card is not detected: Contact Nintendo Support for service. Nintendo directs users in this situation to send one or more problematic cards for testing; follow the instructions for your region.
- Visible debris or contamination: Do not force the card or an object into the slot. Nintendo says the card may need replacement and the console may need service.
Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance is specific to its service process. Start at the official Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express card troubleshooting page for the applicable regional instructions.

Quickly identify which case applies
| What you find | What it indicates | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The card is an ordinary microSD card | It is not supported for Switch 2 game storage. | Use a microSD Express card for Switch 2 games; the older card can still import screenshots and videos to system memory. |
| One microSD Express card is not detected | The issue could involve seating, visible contamination, the card, or first-use setup. | Power off, inspect and reseat it, check first-use update status, then consider formatting after backup. Replace it if formatting does not restore detection. |
| Multiple microSD Express cards are not detected | A console fault is more likely than a single bad card. | Contact Nintendo service and follow its instructions about sending cards for testing. |
