If Google Search traffic drops, first confirm the decline in Search Console and identify which pages, queries, countries, devices, and search types are affected. Then investigate the pattern before changing the site: a fall in clicks and impressions points to different causes than steady impressions with fewer clicks, and neither pattern alone proves a Google penalty or algorithm update.
How to confirm and scope the drop
Open Google Search Console’s Performance report and compare the affected period with an equivalent period. Review clicks, impressions, and average position together, then use the report’s tables and filters to isolate queries, pages, countries, devices, and search appearances. Compare web, image, video, and news performance separately when those surfaces matter to your site.

Extend the chart to 16 months to see whether the change follows an annual pattern. Google recommends focusing on clicks and impressions as useful measures of performance rather than treating average position as a standalone verdict. Check Google’s Search Console data anomalies page as well: processing changes or logging errors can create an apparent decline.

Search Console reports Google Search performance; Analytics reports activity on your site. Clicks and sessions are not expected to match exactly because the tools use different measurement and processing methods. Google explains the differences in its Search Console and Google Analytics comparison.

Could a Google update be responsible?
Check the Google Search Status Dashboard for broad ranking updates and system incidents. It reports widespread issues; an issue affecting a smaller set of pages or sites may not appear there. Even when a decline overlaps with an update, timing alone does not prove the update caused it.
For a suspected core update, verify its rollout start and completion dates on the dashboard. Google recommends waiting at least one full week after rollout ends before analyzing the impact. Compare the current period with a week before rollout began, and examine search types separately. A small shift—Google gives moving from position 2 to 4 as an example—does not call for drastic action; a larger change, such as position 4 to 29, merits a closer assessment.

Core updates are broad changes to Google’s systems, not changes aimed at particular sites or pages. A post-update decline does not by itself establish that a page is fundamentally defective. Google notes: “In general, most sites don’t need to worry about core updates and may not even realize one has happened.” See Google’s guidance on core updates.

Which technical checks should you make?
Check crawling, indexing, and availability
Review Search Console’s Crawl stats and Page indexing reports for changes or errors. Use URL Inspection on representative affected pages to see whether Google can access and index them. Confirm that the pages are available, return suitable status codes, and are not accidentally blocked by robots.txt or a noindex directive. Server availability, robots.txt fetch failures, and not-found responses can prevent Google from crawling, indexing, or serving pages; Google’s crawling error guidance describes these issues.

Check that your sitemap lists current URLs, robots.txt does not block pages you want indexed, crawl priorities are sensible, and the server can handle requests. A soft 404 can occur when a page says content is missing but returns HTTP 200, or when rendering produces an empty or error page. If content has moved, use a 301 redirect to its replacement; if it is gone with no replacement, use a 404 or 410. Google cautions that returning 503 or 429 responses to Googlebot for more than two days can lead to URLs being dropped from the index; these are not traffic-recovery tactics.
Review migrations and recent releases
If the drop followed a migration or URL change, verify the old-to-new redirect mapping, indexing of the new URLs, sitemaps, and crawl errors. Google says a medium-sized site can take a few weeks for it to notice URL changes, and larger sites can take longer. Compare the timing of the decline with releases, template changes, and changes to page availability.

Check security and manual actions
If a security incident is plausible, review Search Console’s Security Issues report. If spam is a possibility, check the Manual Actions report and Google’s spam policies. Policy violations can lower rankings or remove pages from results. After fixing violations, automated systems may take months to recognize compliance. A link-spam update can also remove ranking benefit previously attributed to spammy links; changing links later does not necessarily restore that benefit. How to tell whether demand changed
For queries losing clicks and impressions, compare the pattern with Google Trends. If interest is falling across the wider web as well, seasonality or a change in user interest may explain some or all of the decline rather than a site-specific problem. Seasonal patterns differ by query and niche, so do not assume a calendar explanation without checking.

When should you change the site?
Match the response to the size, scope, and persistence of the decline. For a small fluctuation on pages that are already performing well, Google advises against radical edits. A large, sustained, broad decline calls for a site-wide self-assessment and a closer review of the pages that lost visibility. If only a page group fell, start with that group and its shared template rather than making unrelated site-wide changes.
Use the evidence to choose a targeted fix—such as correcting an accidental noindex, repairing a redirect, resolving an availability problem, or improving a result title—rather than making several unrelated changes at once. Google says meaningful changes can take from a few days to several months to affect results, and there is no guarantee that changes will produce a visible ranking improvement.
