If you’re in danger now, try your local emergency number first. An emergency call may connect through another available mobile network even when your carrier has no service. If it fails, use your phone’s satellite emergency option if it appears, move to open sky when safe, and follow the screen’s positioning prompts. Satellite messaging can be delayed or unavailable; it is not a guaranteed replacement for an ordinary emergency call.
Start with the emergency call, not satellite troubleshooting
Call the local emergency number. On iPhone, Apple says an emergency call may use another available network even if your carrier’s network is unavailable. If the call does not connect, use the satellite option when your iPhone offers it. On a supported Pixel with no mobile or Wi-Fi connection, select Satellite SOS in the emergency dialer.

Keep the emergency interface open and follow its instructions. Do not spend time changing unrelated settings or looking for accessories during an active emergency. If moving to improve reception would expose you to another hazard, stay where you are and follow the phone’s prompts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck whether your phone and location support the feature
A satellite option that does not appear is not necessarily a signal problem. Eligibility depends on the phone, country, software and service conditions; Pixel also requires activation and network registration. Apple’s current support article and Google Pixel Help are the places to confirm the latest country-specific requirements. Availability can change, and a supported-country listing is not a promise of coverage at a particular location.

| Supported hardware | iPhone 14 or later, all models (Apple Support, current page accessed October 4, 2026) | Pixel 9 devices and later, except Pixel 9a (Google Pixel Help, current page accessed October 4, 2026) |
| When the emergency option is offered | Where there is no mobile or Wi-Fi coverage; try calling emergency services first (Apple Support) | From the emergency dialer when there is no mobile or Wi-Fi network (Google Pixel Help) |
| Software and availability | Minimum iOS depends on country: iOS 16.1 in the US and Canada; 16.2 in France, Germany, Ireland and the UK; 16.4 in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland; 17.6 in Japan; 18.4 in Mexico; and 26.4 in Andorra, Iceland and Norway (Apple Support). Apple lists other conditions for some local emergency numbers. | Required software and APIs must be updated and satellite-network registration completed. Google says the listed supported locations include the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, numerous European countries and Australia; its current page has the country list and cautions that the list does not guarantee coverage. |

| Positioning | Hold the phone naturally, maintain a clear view, and follow on-screen guidance (Apple iPhone User Guide) | Face the indicated direction and tilt the phone as prompted (Google Pixel Help) |
| Practice option | Emergency SOS demo; it does not call emergency services (Apple Support and iPhone User Guide) | Settings > Safety and emergency > Satellite SOS. The demo temporarily disables mobile network and restores it when the demo ends (Google Pixel Help). |

Improve the satellite connection safely
- Get a clear view of the sky and horizon. Go outdoors if it is safe. Buildings, terrain, trees and heavy foliage can obstruct or delay the connection. If a nearby obstruction blocks the view, move to a safer open spot rather than climbing or crossing dangerous ground.
- Follow the specific alignment guidance. Pixel may ask you to face a direction and tilt the phone. On iPhone, hold it naturally and follow the screen; Apple says holding it overhead is unnecessary.
- Keep the phone positioned as instructed. Obstructions or loss of line of sight can delay or prevent messages. Do not assume that an accessory or a different messaging app will fix a blocked signal.
- Wait for prompts and replies. Google says connection and response times vary with location, site conditions and other factors; the emergency provider should reply by text within a few minutes after connection. Apple’s September 2022 technical overview says a user-to-PSAP message can take a few seconds to a few minutes to transmit, depending in part on obstruction and message length. That is transmission context, not a guarantee that connection or a response will arrive within that time.
Use the correct emergency flow
iPhone
- Call the local emergency number.
- If the call does not connect and the option is offered, tap Emergency Text via Satellite, then Report Emergency.
- Answer the questionnaire, choose whether to notify emergency contacts, and follow the positioning instructions.
- After connecting, continue following the prompts to stay connected and receive replies.
Depending on your settings and the emergency flow, Apple says responders may receive questionnaire answers, your location including elevation, remaining battery life, and Medical ID and emergency-contact details if configured.

Pixel
- Dial the local emergency number. If there is no mobile or Wi-Fi network, select Satellite SOS in the dialer.
- Tap Use Satellite SOS and Start, complete the questionnaire, and choose whether to notify emergency contacts.
- Follow the positioning prompts, then stay outside with a clear view of the sky so you can receive a reply.
Google says Satellite SOS activation requires current software and APIs and completed satellite-network registration; it sends a notification when activation is complete. You can check status in Settings. Google also notes that connectivity depends on coverage, network conditions and the relevant government agency, and that its location list does not guarantee coverage.

If the option is missing or the attempt still fails
- The phone is showing a demo instead: Apple says its Settings satellite option may not appear where mobile or Wi-Fi coverage exists; Control Centre can open the demo in that situation. The demo is for practice, not a live emergency connection. Google’s demo is under Settings > Safety and emergency > Satellite SOS and temporarily turns mobile networking off until the demo ends.
- The phone or software may not qualify: Check the model, country and minimum software version against the current Apple or Google support page. On Pixel, also verify activation, registration and that Google Messages is the default.
- The sky view may be obstructed: If it is safe, change position to improve the view. Terrain, buildings and foliage can interfere; do not take physical risks to find a better spot.
- Coverage or service conditions may prevent connection: A supported device and country do not ensure a working link at your location. Keep following the emergency interface rather than assuming that repeated attempts, a setting change or an accessory can guarantee a connection.
If you started an iPhone satellite emergency session accidentally
Do not quit the session. Apple instructs users to wait for a responder, then explain that emergency help is not needed. Ending the session before the responder replies could leave the situation unclear.

Prepare before travelling beyond coverage
Before a remote trip, learn the prompts while you have time. Apple recommends trying its Emergency SOS demo, setting up Medical ID and adding emergency contacts. Pixel users can try the Satellite SOS demo in Settings > Safety and emergency > Satellite SOS. These practice flows do not contact emergency services and cannot guarantee that a live connection will work later.
