Investors look for an important customer problem, a capable team, evidence that customers want the solution, and a business that can grow. For an AI startup, the key question is whether AI makes a real workflow materially better—and whether the product can deliver that value reliably outside a demo. The evidence investors expect changes with the company’s stage; there is no universal scorecard or standard numerical cutoff.

Start with the customer problem, not the AI label

At pre-seed and seed, Microsoft for Startups describes investors as tending to look for founder-market fit, a clear problem, technical execution, speed of learning, and early evidence of real demand. A founder should be ready to explain which customers they spoke with or observed, what they learned, what changed in response, and why those signals suggest a genuine need.

“AI-powered” is not customer evidence by itself. The case is stronger when the product addresses a specific workflow and the team can explain what becomes faster, more accurate, less costly, or otherwise better for the customer. The important distinction is between a capability that sounds impressive and a product that solves a consequential problem.

Show that the product creates value in real use

As companies approach Series A, Microsoft for Startups says the emphasis shifts from a compelling demonstration to proof in real customer environments: actual usage, measurable customer value, reliability, and a credible path into day-to-day workflows. A pilot can help establish interest, but it is not equivalent to sustained use or demonstrated outcomes.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

Real deployments test assumptions that a controlled demo may not expose. Investors may want to understand how the system performs with real users and data, what it costs to operate, how dependable it is, and how it fits into existing work. Founders should connect product evidence to customer outcomes and explain whether a pilot is progressing toward repeated, routine use.

Explain what makes the company hard to displace

Access to a model alone may not give a startup a lasting advantage, especially as models and tools change. In a TechCrunch survey of 20 investors in enterprise startups, more than half of respondents cited the quality or rarity of proprietary data as an advantage. That is a reported view from a limited survey, not a rule that every startup must own proprietary data.

Defensibility can instead—or additionally—come from a combination of assets and execution:

  • Hard-to-replicate data access or a distinctive way of using data.
  • Deep understanding of a domain, customer, or complex workflow.
  • Integrations and workflow placement that make the product useful in daily operations.
  • Technical research, product experience, and a team capable of executing faster or better.

Battery Ventures investor Jason Mendel told TechCrunch, “I’m looking for companies that have deep data and workflow moats.” That is one investor’s stated perspective, not a universal funding criterion. The practical question for a founder is why customers will keep choosing the product even as alternatives improve.

Make the route to a durable business credible

Investors also assess whether the product can support a business rather than remain a feature that a larger platform could absorb. TechCrunch’s reporting on enterprise investor views highlights task-specific applications, vertical- and persona-specific workflows, security products that remediate problems, and reliability or resilience. It also describes investor debate about when a point solution is a feature, a product, or a standalone business; some focused solutions can still justify independent companies.

A fundraising case should make the commercial logic legible:

  • Buyer: Who has the problem, controls the budget, and makes the purchasing decision?
  • Reason to buy: What meaningful outcome makes adoption worthwhile?
  • Sales and deployment: How does the product reach customers and become usable in their environment?
  • Durability: What keeps the company’s position valuable as customer needs, competitors, and underlying models change?

For a startup using an open-source model or offering an API, subscription, or another monetization approach, the financing case still rests on the same business question: who pays, for what continuing value, and why can this company earn that revenue sustainably? The existence of a technical product does not by itself establish a route to market.

Expect the evidence bar to rise with the funding stage

Microsoft for Startups’ stage-based guidance describes a progression from learning and early demand toward production evidence and then repeatable, disciplined growth. These are patterns in its guidance, not mandatory milestones or a universal investor checklist.

Stage What investors tend to seek Useful evidence to present
Pre-seed and seed Founder-market fit, problem clarity, technical execution, learning speed, and early real demand. Customer conversations or early usage; what the team learned and changed; a working proof of concept; and why the selected workflow matters.
Series A Real usage, measurable customer value, reliability in real environments, and workflow adoption. Evidence from real users and data; customer outcomes; reliability under operating conditions; and a credible path from pilot to daily use.
Growth Efficient growth, repeatable go-to-market, and operational discipline that can keep pace with adoption. Repeatable acquisition and deployment; explainable cost and performance; and processes for maintaining trust as usage scales.

The sources do not establish universal thresholds for retention, revenue, margins, or model performance. Founders should present the metrics that fit their product and stage, explain how they are measured, and show what those results mean for customer value and the business.

Address trust and operating readiness, especially in enterprise sales

Production use brings operational questions into view. Microsoft for Startups identifies reliability, cost and latency management, security, governance, observability, and operational performance as concerns that can become material in customer environments. For growth-stage companies, its guidance also emphasizes efficient growth, repeatable go-to-market, and trust and operational discipline that scale with adoption.

These concerns matter particularly when a product handles sensitive data, supports important business processes, or must fit into a customer’s existing systems. A founder should be prepared to describe how the product is operated and monitored, how costs and performance are managed, and how security and governance needs are handled. The relevance and depth of each topic depend on the product and customer; investors do not all apply an identical checklist.

Read the funding market figures in context

OECD analysis using Preqin data reports that AI firms accounted for 61% of global venture-capital investment in 2025: USD 258.7 billion out of USD 427.1 billion. The corresponding share in 2022 was 30%. The figures include corporate venture capital and companies classified by the OECD as AI firms.

  • Generative AI firms received USD 35.3 billion in global 2025 venture investment, about 14% of AI venture investment.
  • Deals over USD 100 million accounted for about 73% of 2025 AI investment value.
  • Firms classified in IT infrastructure and hosting received USD 109.3 billion in 2025; this broad category can include AI model developers.

These figures describe the overall market and its concentration, not an individual startup’s likelihood of raising money. OECD notes that classification and methodology affect the totals, smaller deals may be added retroactively, and its analysis is only one view of AI investment. Round definitions can also vary and overlap.
