If Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery will not reset your PC, first protect your files and note exactly what appears on screen. The right next step depends on whether the recovery environment starts, whether it can find the factory recovery image, your Dell model and processor, and whether the PC can connect to the internet. A missing factory-reset option does not by itself prove that the computer has failed.
Before trying the reset again
If Windows or SupportAssist OS Recovery is still accessible, back up important files to another location before proceeding. Dell warns that resetting permanently deletes all data on the hard drive and removes programs or drivers you installed. You may need product keys to reinstall licensed apps, and non-factory software will need to be installed again. Read the deletion warning on screen carefully; do not confirm it unless you are ready to lose the affected data. Keep the computer connected to power during recovery.

Before changing recovery methods, record what happened: whether SupportAssist OS Recovery opened, whether you saw a “Start Reset” button, which reset choices were offered, whether the PC detected a factory image, whether Wi-Fi was available, and the exact wording or code of any error. These details affect which Dell recovery routes apply.
Choose the recovery route that matches the screen
| Option | What it does | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Reset to factory settings | Returns the operating system and default software to the state supplied by Dell. | Depends on the factory recovery image being available; deletes data and user-installed programs. |
| Reset and update | Installs a newer operating system with critical drivers and applications. | Availability depends on the PC. Dell’s OS Recovery Tool route requires a SupportAssist OS Recovery USB key and is supported on certain models. |
| Cloud Restore | Downloads and installs the latest available operating system for the Dell computer. | Requires an active internet connection and a USB drive with at least 16 GB capacity. |
| BIOSConnect | Can restore a recovery image that is missing, corrupted, or needs repair. | Available only on supported Dell models. |
| Windows Push-Button Reset | Provides a Windows recovery alternative. | Dell directs Qualcomm-processor systems to try this first; it is not a SupportAssist OS Recovery path. |
Dell may show different options according to the computer and recovery state. Its reset guide describes the factory-settings and Reset and update choices.

If SupportAssist OS Recovery will not open or your model is unsupported
Check the exact Dell model and processor against Dell’s SupportAssist OS Recovery support information before repeating the same steps. SupportAssist OS Recovery is not available for every Dell computer; Dell excludes systems with Qualcomm processors and recommends trying Windows Push-Button Reset first for those systems. Use Dell’s current support matrix to check model-specific availability.
If “Reset to factory settings” is missing
A missing factory-reset choice does not necessarily mean there is no Dell recovery option or that a hardware fault has been proven. Dell says only “Reset and update” may appear when the PC is irreparable or when the factory-installed operating system cannot be detected. If that is the choice offered, check its on-screen requirements and your model’s eligibility rather than assuming the factory image can still be used.

If the factory image is missing, corrupted, or reset is stuck
Try BIOSConnect on a supported model
If SupportAssist cannot use the local recovery image, BIOSConnect may restore an absent or corrupted image on supported newer Dell computers. Availability is model-dependent; check Dell’s recovery guidance for the applicable route.
Use cloud or USB recovery when applicable
Dell’s Cloud Restore requires an active internet connection and a USB drive with 16 GB capacity. Another documented route is to create a SupportAssist OS Recovery USB key for Reset and update through the Dell OS Recovery Tool; that route is limited to certain models. See Dell’s OS Recovery instructions for the supported setup. A USB drive is not required for every reset method.

If the reset still fails
Do not keep retrying without recording the error and confirming model support. Run Dell’s hardware diagnostics or contact Dell Support with the exact model, processor, recovery option selected, and full error text or code. Those details help distinguish a recovery-image or eligibility issue from a possible hardware problem; Dell’s published guidance does not establish one fix for every failed reset. Start with Dell’s recovery and reset guidance and the model’s support page.
