When ants keep returning, first track where and when they appear, then remove accessible food and address moisture. If you use an indoor bait, choose one whose current label allows the intended indoor use and covers the target ant. Don’t assume the ants’ species, nest location, or reason for returning without evidence.
Start by mapping the ant activity
Before choosing a treatment, note which rooms have ants, where trails run, where they may be entering, and when activity occurs. This record can help you see whether activity is concentrated in one area or appears in several places. It does not, by itself, identify the species or prove where a nest is located.
Remove accessible food and address moisture where you find it. These are sensible household steps, but they cannot establish why ants are returning in a particular home.
Choose bait by its current label, not by the word “ant”
Indoor ant baits are a product category, not a guarantee that any one bait suits every ant or situation. EPA registration records and product labels establish that such products exist, while the allowed uses and target pests depend on the individual product. Check the current label for both the intended indoor location and the target pest before buying or using bait.

For example, one Hormikol label describes claims for common household ants but excludes carpenter, harvester, fire, and pharaoh ants. That limitation applies to that label; it should not be assumed to describe every bait product. If you cannot confidently identify the ant, ask a local cooperative extension service or qualified pest-management professional for help rather than guessing.
Use the product exactly as labeled
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Do’s and Don’ts of Pest Control advises: “Always read and follow the pesticide label’s instructions and safety warnings.” Labels can differ, so the directions for one product should not be transferred to another.

The available guidance does not determine why ants recur in an individual home or establish that any single treatment will work.
