Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with the exact model number and the manufacturer’s end-of-support notice. Then determine whether the hardware still exposes a documented local protocol such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread or ESPHome. A local controller can preserve useful functions only when that specific model supports it; a cloud-only integration cannot be revived by installing a hub.
Before keeping the device connected, assess security updates, the data it can access and whether losing remote monitoring creates a safety risk. If there is no safe, supported local route, check migration, warranty or refund terms and then choose a suitable replacement or authorized e-waste recycling.

1. Identify exactly what stopped working
“The cloud is ending” can mean several different things. A manufacturer may disable only remote access while leaving local buttons operational, or it may remove account login, app setup, automations and voice-assistant links together. Do not diagnose the whole product family from a headline about one model.

Record the device and the failed function
- Write down the brand, model or SKU, hardware revision and firmware version shown in the app or on the label.
- Describe the failure precisely: initial setup, app login, remote control, a local automation, voice control, camera viewing, notifications, or a physical control.
- Note when it stopped, including whether the failure matches a date in a published support notice.
- Record how the device is connected: Wi-Fi or Ethernet, a proprietary radio, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, Matter or another method.
- List what the device controls and what accounts, locations or personal data it can reach.
These details prevent a common mistake: treating a vendor-cloud outage as proof that the hardware itself is dead.

Read the notice for the exact model
Use the manufacturer’s current support or end-of-life page and look for affected model numbers, remaining functions, setup deadlines, migration instructions, warranty remedies and disposal guidance. A notice for one product family does not automatically apply to every product from that company. Save a copy or PDF because support pages can change after the shutdown.
Two published examples show why the wording matters:
| Example | Published shutdown | Functions or models named | Documented path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Belkin Wemo cloud-dependent products | January 31, 2026 | Wemo app, remote access, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant features | Devices configured with Apple HomeKit before the date may continue locally; Thread-based devices named in the notice are not affected |
| Hager domovea | End of December 2025 | TJA 450 and TJA 451 cloud service; remote control and app downloads end | Hager recommends migration to domovea plus |
The Wemo exception applies only to the products and pre-deadline HomeKit setup covered by that notice. The Hager migration advice applies to the listed TJA models. Neither example predicts what another manufacturer will do.
2. Separate local control from cloud control
A cloud service normally handles account authentication, commands, automations, notifications and remote access on the manufacturer’s servers. Local control sends commands directly over your home network or a supported radio protocol. When the cloud is retired, the latter can continue, but only if the device exposes a usable local interface and a controller knows how to use it.
When a local controller can help
Home Assistant documents local operation for supported devices using Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread and ESPHome. A compatible controller or radio adapter may therefore keep a device working without internet access. Compatibility is model-specific: the protocol name on a box is not enough. Check the exact model, firmware and required adapter in the integration documentation.
A controller does not recreate an unavailable vendor cloud. If the integration sends every command to the manufacturer’s server, it cannot reach the device after that server is shut down. Installing Home Assistant, or any other hub, without confirming a local integration can leave you with another box and no working control path. Home Assistant’s official hardware list includes Home Assistant Green, but that listing does not establish compatibility with an unspecified unsupported device.

Existing local setups may survive
Some products were already commissioned into a local platform before the cloud deadline. They may continue to operate while new setup, remote access or voice features disappear. Record the current configuration before resetting anything: a factory reset can erase the only working local pairing and require the retired cloud service for re-commissioning.

Matter is a local option, not an automatic rescue
Matter is designed for local communication across compatible ecosystems, but a legacy device does not become a Matter device because a cloud service ends. Confirm all of the following for the exact model:
- The manufacturer explicitly lists Matter support, not merely Wi-Fi, Thread or “works with” compatibility.
- The device can still be commissioned after the cloud shutdown and has the required setup code or QR code.
- Your controller or hub supports the relevant Matter transport and device type.
- Your home network has the required IPv6 and multicast behavior.
- The manufacturer does not require an account or an online activation step that is no longer available.
Home Assistant notes that some manufacturers require an account to enable Matter for particular products. That requirement can block a new setup even when the Matter protocol itself is local.
Apple HomeKit
Apple Home can control a device locally when the device was genuinely added to HomeKit and the HomeKit path remains supported. In Belkin’s Wemo notice, the company states: “Devices configured with Apple HomeKit before this date may continue to function locally via HomeKit.” The sentence concerns the Wemo products covered by that notice and configuration completed before January 31, 2026; it is not a general promise for every smart device.
Google Home
Google’s Matter guidance says a Matter-compatible hub is needed for Google Home local control and that IPv6 must be enabled for Matter to work properly on the network. A Google Home account or speaker alone does not make a non-Matter legacy device local. Verify the hub model, network settings and commissioning process before deleting the old vendor app.

It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
- Preserve the current state. Photograph wiring, labels and indicator lights. Export automations or settings if the app still permits it. Do not factory-reset a device that might already have a working local pairing.
- Read the model-specific manual and integration page. Look for a local API, supported radio protocol, Matter commissioning instructions or an officially supported ecosystem. Treat forum claims as leads, not guarantees.
- Confirm the controller hardware. A Zigbee or Z-Wave device needs the corresponding radio coordinator; a Thread or Matter device needs a compatible border router or hub. Follow the controller maker’s documented requirements.
- Pair one low-risk function first. Test a light or nonessential outlet before moving a lock, alarm, heater or medical-related device. Verify that commands work when the internet connection is unavailable if the documentation says local operation is supported.
- Test every retained function. Check physical controls, schedules, scenes, notifications, voice control and remote access separately. Local operation may preserve switching while removing remote access or alerts.
- Document the result. Record the firmware, integration version, required account, network settings and any limitations. This makes later replacement or troubleshooting safer.
Do not bypass authentication, flash unofficial firmware or expose an unsupported device directly to the public internet merely to restore a feature. Those actions can create security and safety problems that are harder to reverse than replacing the hardware.
5. Decide whether continued use is safe
Loss of support is both a security event and a functionality event. NIST recommends that owners be told the security and non-security consequences of support loss and the protections that may be available. Apply that analysis to the actual role of your device.
Questions to answer
- Does the manufacturer still publish security updates for this exact model?
- Can the device access cameras, microphones, locks, alarm systems, occupancy data or other sensitive information?
- Does it fail safely if an automation, notification or remote command disappears?
- Will losing remote monitoring leave a person, pet, property or process unprotected?
- Can the device perform its useful function entirely inside the home network?
If a supported local mode exists, restricting the device to the home network can reduce exposure. Use the router or controller’s documented network-isolation features and verify that local control still works. Isolation is a possible protection, not a universal fix: an unpatched device can still be vulnerable to another device on the same network, and isolation may disable required alerts.
Do not rely on an unsupported workaround for a smoke alarm, security lock, medical monitor, heating control or another safety-critical function. Use the manufacturer’s guidance or a currently supported device with a tested fallback.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Compare migration, replacement and recycling
Make the decision against the device’s real job, not just its purchase price. A local workaround may retain switching but lose remote access, notifications or warranty support. A replacement may cost more but restore updates and predictable operation.
Migration
Choose migration when the manufacturer provides an official successor or a documented transfer. Confirm which automations, users, accessories and history move, whether a new account is required, and whether the old device must be online before a deadline. Hager’s domovea notice, for example, directs owners of TJA 450 and TJA 451 systems toward domovea plus after the cloud service ends.

Replacement
Replace the device when no supported local integration exists, security updates have ended, or its safety role cannot tolerate missing cloud functions. Select a product that supports the protocol and ecosystem you actually use, and verify local behavior before installing it in a critical location. Keep the old unit powered down during the transition if it no longer receives updates.
Warranty, refund and recycling
Check the end-of-support notice and your region’s warranty rules before discarding hardware. Belkin’s Wemo notice describes a possible refund for eligible in-warranty products and recommends an authorized e-waste recycling center for certain unusable models that cannot continue through HomeKit. Eligibility depends on the listed product and warranty conditions.
If the manufacturer gives no remedy, use its disposal instructions or an authorized e-waste channel. Remove account access, unlink the device from smart-home platforms, delete stored credentials where possible and perform a factory reset only after you have preserved any evidence needed for a warranty claim. Do not place electronics with ordinary household waste where local rules prohibit it.
7. Troubleshoot the most common dead ends
The app cannot log in, but the device still responds locally
Stop trying to repair the retired account service. Test the physical control and any documented local integration, then disable unnecessary internet access if that does not break required functions.
A hub discovers the device but cannot control it
Check model and firmware support, the required radio adapter, encryption or commissioning requirements, and whether the integration is cloud-dependent. Discovery alone does not prove that commands are local or supported.
The Tool Desk

Verify that the device is truly Matter-certified, has not been reset into a state requiring the retired app, and still has a valid commissioning code. Check the hub and IPv6 network requirements. If the manufacturer requires online account activation, ask whether it offers a migration path; do not assume a network setting can solve an unavailable activation server.
Remote access disappeared but local control works
Decide whether remote access is essential. If it is not, document the local setup and restrict internet exposure where practical. If remote monitoring is necessary for safety, treat replacement or an official migration as the safer option.
8. A compact decision checklist
- Exact model and firmware recorded.
- Official notice checked for shutdown date, affected features and remedies.
- Local protocol and model-specific integration verified.
- Matter, HomeKit or Google Home requirements confirmed rather than assumed.
- Security-update status and data exposure assessed.
- Safety consequences of losing remote control or alerts tested.
- Migration, warranty, refund and recycling terms reviewed.
- Replacement selected only after confirming its local and safety behavior.
The practical rule is simple: preserve a device only when its exact model has a documented, secure local path and the remaining functions are appropriate for its job. Otherwise, move to an officially supported platform or replace and recycle it responsibly.
