Silence by itself does not tell you why they have gone quiet, and being online or playing a game does not prove they are deliberately ignoring you.
Send one low-pressure check-in
Choose a message that shows concern without demanding an explanation or an immediate reply. For example:

Then let the other person decide whether to respond. The CDC’s general guidance on supportive conversations says that showing care and being there can matter, while recognizing that you cannot control how someone reacts. That guidance is not specific to gaming friendships and cannot guarantee a reply: CDC guidance on talking with a friend.

What to do if they still do not reply
It can hurt not to know what happened. Try not to turn that uncertainty into a conclusion about their motives: no reply, online status, read receipts, or continued game activity does not establish why this particular person is silent. There is no evidence-based universal waiting period for this situation.
- Avoid sending repeated messages or asking other people to pressure them.
- Decide for yourself how long you want to leave the door open; treat that as a boundary for your own well-being, not a punishment or proof that the friendship was false.
- Keep gaming or socializing with other people rather than putting the rest of your social life on hold.
When the situation calls for a safety response
Ordinary nonresponse is different from harassment, coercion, threats, or suspicious requests. Respond to what is actually happening rather than treating silence alone as evidence of danger.

If you feel targeted or unsafe online
Use the platform’s privacy and conversation controls, preserve relevant evidence, and report and block abusive accounts. If the experience is upsetting, consider talking with someone you trust or contacting an appropriate support service. If there is a credible threat to your safety
Use an appropriate local emergency or law-enforcement service if you believe you may be in immediate danger. If a younger player is unsure about contact
A parent or trusted adult can help a child decide what information to keep private, when to stop playing and seek help, and how to handle a request from an unknown player to move the conversation to another platform. It can be hard to know who someone is from a gaming account alone. The Australian eSafety Commissioner cautions: “It’s common to make new friends while gaming, but make sure you’re careful about how well you really know your ‘online friends’.” That is a general online-safety reminder, not a reason to assume that any particular friend is dishonest or unsafe: eSafety Commissioner gaming guidance.
