If an app update is stuck, first check your internet connection and available storage, then close and reopen the app store and restart your device. After that, use the steps for your device: iPhone or iPad, Android, or Windows. The right fix also depends on whether one app or every app is affected.
Start with the quick checks
- Check your connection. Confirm Wi-Fi or mobile data works by opening a webpage. If possible, switch networks and try the update again.
- Check free storage. An update may fail if the device cannot download or unpack it. On Android, Google says less than 1 GB available can be an indicator of low storage; it is a diagnostic clue, not a universal minimum. Google Play Help
- Close and reopen the store. Return to the store and retry the update.
- Restart the device. This is a low-risk step to try before resetting settings or removing an app.
If the update still will not complete, follow the section for your device. Menu names can vary by operating-system version.

Fix a stuck App Store update on iPhone or iPad
Check the update and download status
- Open the App Store, tap your profile picture, and check for available app updates. Install the affected update manually if it appears.
- If the app icon is on the Home Screen and its download is stalled, touch and hold the icon and choose Prioritize Download, when that option is available.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad and try again.
Resolve account or eligibility prompts
If the App Store asks you to verify a payment method, complete the prompt even if the app is free. Apple notes that a valid payment method may be required for a free download. If the iOS or iPadOS system update is stuck
A system update is different from an app update. Check that the device is compatible, has enough free storage, is connected to a network, and has power. Try another network; if needed, delete the downloaded update and download it again. Apple also describes updating through a Mac or iTunes as an alternative. Fix a pending or failed Google Play update on Android
Check connection, storage, and device settings
- Confirm Wi-Fi or mobile data is working. Try another network if available.
- Check available storage and make space if it is low. Google says low storage can stop apps from downloading and installing; less than 1 GB free may indicate low storage, but the amount needed depends on the device and update. - Check for an Android system update and install one if available.
- Confirm that date and time are set automatically in the device settings.
- Close and reopen the Play Store, then restart the device and retry.
Determine whether it is one app or the whole store

Fix a Microsoft Store app that will not update on Windows
Check the Store, account, and Windows version
- Sign in to the Microsoft account used for the app, then close and reopen Microsoft Store.
- Install available Windows updates, then check Microsoft Store for app updates.
- Confirm the app supports the Windows version installed on the PC.

Repair or reinstall only after simpler checks
If the problem is limited to one app, use Windows’ app settings to try Repair first; if that does not help, try Reset if offered. Reset can remove local app data, so check whether the app stores unsynced information before using it. Reinstall only if repair or reset does not resolve the problem and you can recover any needed data.

Check for managed-network restrictions
On a work- or school-managed PC, a policy, firewall, or proxy may block Store access. Microsoft says Microsoft Store needs Windows Update endpoints accessible to install and update apps.
