Do not revise just because an AI writing tutor sounds certain. Check each comment against the passage it addresses, your assignment instructions and rubric, and what you intended to say. Keep advice that is accurate and useful; question or disregard suggestions that are unsupported, off-task, or would distort your meaning. If feedback is demeaning, unclear, or affects a grade or misconduct decision, involve a qualified person and follow your institution’s process.
First, treat each comment as a claim—not a verdict
AI-generated feedback can be incorrect or shaped by bias; a confident tone does not prove a comment is right. King’s College London warns that generative AI can produce incorrect responses based on probabilities and biases in its guidance on AI-assisted marking and feedback, published in July 2025: King’s College London guidance. That is general institutional guidance, not an assessment of every writing tutor.

Before changing anything, identify what the tutor is actually claiming. Is it pointing out a possible grammar error, challenging a factual statement, recommending a style change, or judging your argument? Locate the exact sentence or passage. A vague reaction such as “this is weak” is not enough to tell you what to revise.

Check whether the advice fits your assignment
Read the relevant passage in context, then compare the comment with the assignment prompt and rubric. A sentence can be grammatically sound yet fail to meet a specific requirement; conversely, an AI’s preferred phrasing may be a matter of style rather than a correction. University of York guidance describes checking feedback against assessment criteria and the rubric: University of York’s guidance on AI-assisted marking and feedback.
#1 Best Overall
- Does it point to evidence? Look for the specific sentence, word, or rubric criterion behind the comment.
- Is the claim accurate? For grammar or factual corrections, verify it using a trusted reference or ask a human reader.
- Is it relevant? Decide whether the proposed change helps meet this assignment’s requirements, rather than a generic idea of “good writing.”
- Does it preserve your meaning and voice? A rewrite that changes your emphasis, argument, or evidence is not automatically an improvement.
- Would a qualified human reader agree? If a consequential point remains uncertain, seek a teacher, tutor, or writing-center advisor.
Accept a correction when you can see why it is accurate and useful. Set aside a preference that is unsupported, unrelated to the rubric, or inconsistent with what you mean.
Ask for clarification without handing over the draft
If the feedback is unclear, ask a narrow question that requires the tutor to explain its reasoning rather than rewrite your work. For example:

Point to the sentence that supports this comment and explain which rubric criterion it relates to. Do not rewrite my paragraph; list the issue and one possible way I could address it.

You can also ask it to list specific grammatical issues without editing the paragraph. The University of Waterloo Writing and Communication Centre recommends limiting the task, including asking for an itemized list of grammatical errors rather than a rewritten passage: Waterloo’s guidance on using text-generating AI. Treat any proposed fix as an option to evaluate, not an instruction to accept. You remain responsible for the final wording and meaning.

Separate harsh delivery from any useful point
A blunt, dismissive, or generalized comment can feel personal, but its tone does not establish whether its substance is right. If possible, separate the two: note any specific, actionable observation, then assess it against the passage and rubric. If the comment is insulting, remains confusing after clarification, or gives no usable reason, show it alongside your draft and assignment criteria to a teacher, tutor, or writing-center advisor.
The University of Denver’s University Writing Program calls for generous feedback that recognizes diverse voices and cautions that overly critical feedback may affect multilingual writers: University of Denver’s statement on generative AI and writing. This is a caution in its guidance, not a quantified finding. Do not use an AI detector to try to prove who wrote a comment or draft; the Denver guidance cautions against relying on AI-detection applications.

Check course rules before sharing work
Before pasting a draft, rubric, or course material into a tool, check the rules for your course and institution. Restrictions vary, and a tool’s availability does not mean every kind of material may be uploaded. Avoid sharing classmates’ work or restricted course materials without permission, and use an institution-approved tool when required.

That is Stanford’s rule, not a universal policy; check the rules that apply to you.

If feedback affects a grade or misconduct concern, contact a person
If an AI comment has affected your mark or is being used to raise an academic-integrity concern, preserve the feedback and relevant draft history, then ask the instructor or responsible office what review process applies. Check deadlines promptly because appeal routes and timelines vary by institution.
If the concern involves Turnitin’s AI-writing percentage, distinguish the indicator from a misconduct decision. Turnitin says its percentage is a starting point for conversation, and that the final decision about whether misconduct occurred rests with the reviewer or instructor: Turnitin’s guidance on a high AI-writing percentage. That statement concerns Turnitin’s indicator; it does not establish how every institution handles every tool or case. King’s College London likewise emphasizes human oversight in academic judgments in its AI-assisted marking and feedback guidance.
