Samsung Keyboard gives you documented switches for several suggestion and correction features, plus phrase shortcuts and a way to choose which apps receive text corrections. Gboard lets you choose suggestion types, manage dictionary words, and remove unwanted suggestions with a drag gesture. Choose based on the specific control you need, then check your phone: menus and availability can vary by device, software, region, and language.
What “control over suggestions” means
Suggestion control can mean deciding what appears above the keyboard, correcting or replacing text, teaching the keyboard a word, or removing a word it has learned. Samsung Keyboard and Gboard both document ways to manage suggestions, but their settings are not identical.

What Samsung Keyboard lets you control
Switch individual suggestion and correction features
Samsung documents separate settings for predictive text, emoji and sticker suggestions, auto replace, and text corrections. That separation is useful if you want to keep some assistance while turning off another kind. Samsung also documents choosing which apps receive text corrections through Manage apps.

On supported Galaxy phones, the usual route is Settings → General management → Samsung Keyboard → Smart typing. Samsung says the settings can also be reached from the keyboard toolbar. Names and locations can differ by model or software version. Samsung Canada’s guide, updated March 28, 2026, applies to devices sold in Canada and warns that screens and settings may vary elsewhere: Adjust Samsung keyboard settings on your Galaxy phone.
Create shortcuts for phrases
Samsung’s Text shortcuts feature lets you associate a short trigger with a longer phrase, then use the expanded text while typing. This is more than adding a single word to a dictionary: it can save frequently reused wording. Find Text shortcuts in the Samsung Keyboard settings; the exact path may vary. Remove a learned word
Type until the unwanted word appears in Samsung’s prediction bar. Touch and hold that word, then confirm its removal when prompted. The word needs to be visible in the bar for this documented method to work.
What Gboard lets you control
Choose suggestion types and manage vocabulary
In Gboard, open the keyboard’s features menu, select Settings → Text correction, and choose the suggestion types you want, such as next-word or emoji suggestions. To add an unfamiliar word, tap its red-underlined form and choose Add to dictionary.

Remove a suggestion
When an unwanted word appears in the suggestion strip, touch and hold it, then drag it to the bin. Google’s instructions for suggestion types, dictionary additions, and word removal are in Get word suggestions and fix mistakes – Android.
Check language and device limits
Google’s cited help page says Smart Compose is US English only and proofreading is currently US English only. It also lists device- and language-limited availability for suggestions, naming Pixel 4a and later and English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. These are the limits stated on that help page; check Google’s current eligibility details and your own device and language before relying on a feature.

Which keyboard should you choose?
- Choose Samsung Keyboard if you want phrase-expansion shortcuts or need the documented option to select which apps receive text corrections.
- Choose Gboard if your priority is choosing suggestion types and using its documented touch-and-drag method to discard a suggestion.
- Either can fit if you mainly want to turn suggestion features on or off, add vocabulary, or remove an unwanted learned word; both document controls for these tasks.
These are differences in documented controls, not a verdict on accuracy, speed, privacy, or typing feel. Those qualities are not established by the cited feature documentation.

Before switching keyboards, open the keyboard you actually use and look for its suggestion settings. Samsung’s current Canada guide is region-specific, while its India personalization instructions date to 2021; menus may have changed. Gboard’s listed feature availability is also conditional on device and language. If a named switch or feature is missing, it may not be available in your device’s software, region, or language configuration.
