What to Do When an AI Room Design Includes Unsafe or Impossible Features

AI room designs are visual references, not approved plans. Check dimensions, structure, services, fire safety, and local requirements before work begins.

Treat an AI room-design image as inspiration, not as a construction plan. Before buying materials or starting work, compare it with the real room, flag anything that appears impossible or affects structure, building systems, fire safety, or escape, and get qualified local review for consequential changes. Applicable rules depend on where the project is and what work is proposed.

First, pause and sort the image into two kinds of decisions

Separate visual choices from changes that could affect the building. Paint colors, styling, and movable furniture are generally different from removing a wall, changing a window or door, relocating electrical or plumbing fixtures, or altering fire or escape provisions. The second group calls for checks against the actual building and the requirements that apply locally.

This distinction is a practical screening approach, not a universal code checklist. The Institution of Structural Engineers warns that AI may make errors when designing structural elements and identifies review by a senior engineer as a mitigation. The American Institute of Architects’ AI guidance also emphasizes verification and quality control for AI-assisted work: Institution of Structural Engineers AI guidance; AIA AI Firm Toolkit.

Check the proposal against the room that actually exists

Use reliable measurements and records, not the rendering alone. Compare the proposed design with the room’s dimensions, doors and windows, visible services, fixed equipment, and routes to exits. If the image seems to move a system, conceal an opening, or create geometry that cannot fit, treat that as an unresolved question—not an instruction to build. A rendered image does not establish what is behind a wall or verify that a proposed feature will work.

  • Dimensions and openings: Check room measurements and the location and size of existing doors and windows.
  • Structure: Flag any wall, beam, ceiling, floor, or other element the design removes, cuts, or changes.
  • Building systems: Identify proposed changes to electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, or other fixed services.
  • Safety and access: Check whether the proposal affects fire protection, access to exits, or the route out of the room.

These checks help identify questions to take to a professional; they do not certify a design as safe or compliant.

Get the right review before consequential work

Ask a qualified professional to assess the actual proposed work and the available measurements, records, and other evidence—not just whether the image looks convincing. The appropriate reviewer depends on the change: structural uncertainty may call for an appropriately qualified structural engineer or architect; electrical or plumbing work calls for a qualified local trade professional; and uncertainty about building requirements or approvals belongs with the relevant local authority or building-control body.

For the England-specific situations covered by its guidance, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and Building Safety Regulator say designers should discuss design intent and necessary evidence with the building-control body before building work. Their Approved Document B FAQs also explain that common guidance may not be enough for unusual or more consequential fire-safety situations, where a detailed, evidence-based understanding of performance for the specific design may be needed: Approved Document B: Fire safety FAQs.

Building and fire rules vary by jurisdiction, project scope, code edition, amendments, and effective date. For example, California HCAI’s code index lists separate code parts and notices with their own dates, including 2025 building, electrical, and mechanical code material; it is not a universal remodeling guide. Check the current rules and approval process where the work will take place: California HCAI codes and regulations.

Compare alternatives by feasibility, not image quality

If an AI tool offers multiple versions, evaluate each against the same real-world questions. A more polished image is not evidence that a design fits, is safe, or meets local requirements.

  • Does it fit verified room dimensions and preserve fixed openings?
  • Does it alter structure or electrical, plumbing, or other building systems?
  • Could it affect fire protection or escape?
  • Which local rules and approvals apply to the proposed work?
  • What evidence is available, and has an appropriately qualified person reviewed the actual proposal?

Keep the image as a visual reference and revise it once feasibility constraints are clear. The NIST AI Risk Management Framework, released on 26 January 2023, is voluntary guidance for trustworthiness considerations in AI design, development, use, and evaluation; it is not a building code or a standard for validating room designs: NIST AI Risk Management Framework.

AI transparency labels do not certify a design

European Commission materials describe AI-generated-content marking and transparency obligations within the AI Act’s legal scope and subject to exceptions. The Commission states that relevant Article 50 transparency provisions apply from 2 August 2026. These rules concern disclosure or detectability of AI-generated content; they do not establish that a room design is structurally sound, feasible, or code-compliant: European Commission: Navigating the AI Act; Guidelines on Transparency of AI-Generated Content.
