Do not submit a manuscript, accept publishing terms, or pay a fee based only on an AI journal finder’s recommendation. Treat the result as a shortlist lead, then verify the journal’s identity, scope, current indexing, editorial practices, and costs using official records. If an important claim remains unclear, ask a subject librarian or your institution’s research-integrity office to review it with you.
Why an AI journal recommendation needs a separate check
A journal finder can suggest candidates, but a recommendation alone does not establish that a journal is suitable, currently indexed, or operating transparently. No particular finder, journal, recommendation, or field is identified here, so it is not possible to determine why a tool produced a specific result or whether a particular journal is predatory. The useful question is not whether AI journal finders are all trustworthy or untrustworthy; it is whether the candidate journal’s important claims can be independently confirmed.

Keep separate questions separate. A journal may publish work in your general field but not the article type or audience you need. It may appear in one database without meeting a requirement imposed by your funder or institution. Indexing itself is not an endorsement of quality or a guarantee that the journal remains a good fit. Check each issue on its own evidence.

Before acting, save the recommendation and the details needed to check it. This is practical advice, not a formal universal procedure: records may change, and retaining the evidence helps an adviser assess the same claims you saw.

- Save the finder’s output, its explanation for the match, and the date you received it.
- Record the journal’s exact title and ISSN, along with the publisher and journal website.
- Keep any solicitation email, fee information, and relevant submission or publishing terms.
- Note which claims matter to your decision, such as a specific index listing, open-access status, or required readership.
Do not send a manuscript, agree to a publishing contract, or pay while material claims are unresolved. A match percentage should not be read as an acceptance probability unless the finder’s own documentation explicitly defines and validates it that way.
Verify the journal’s identity and suitability
Match the exact title and ISSN
Search for the journal by its exact title and ISSN in the official record for the index or directory it claims. Compare the record with the journal’s website: the title, identifier, publisher, and coverage should refer to the same publication. Similar names can make a real journal easy to confuse with another title. A logo on a journal website, a search result, or a third-party summary is not a substitute for the relevant official record.
Check whether the record describes current coverage or only historical coverage. A record’s existence does not necessarily mean that a journal is currently included in a particular index. Directory and index statuses can change, so repeat the lookup close to submission rather than relying on a finder’s cached result.

Decide whether the journal fits this paper
Compare the journal’s stated aims and scope with your manuscript’s subject, methods, audience, and article type. Read recent articles, not just the journal’s description of itself. Ask whether those papers resemble yours in the kind of research, rigor, and readership involved, and whether the journal publishes the type of submission you plan to make.

Also check whether the journal is known to you or colleagues, whether its latest papers can be found through normal scholarly channels, and whether its title is distinct from better-known publications. A broad subject-area match is not enough if the journal’s actual content or audience does not suit the work.
Check governance and practical details
Look for identifiable editors and an editorial board whose names and affiliations can be verified. Review the publisher’s contact information, the journal’s publication schedule, its peer-review description, and its policies on licensing, copyright, corrections, complaints, and research integrity. The pieces should fit together: for example, the stated review process should be clear enough to explain how a manuscript is evaluated, rather than relying on an unsupported promise of rapid acceptance.
List all author charges and the terms attached to them, including when a fee is due and what the publishing agreement says about copyright, licensing, and withdrawal. A fee is not, by itself, proof of misconduct; unclear or inconsistent costs are a reason to ask questions before proceeding.

Check each indexing claim in the database that owns it
Do not treat “indexed” as a single, interchangeable status. Look up the specific database named by the journal and check that the exact title or ISSN appears in the relevant record. If your institution, funder, or field requires a particular index, verify that specific requirement rather than relying on a general claim of visibility.

For a MEDLINE claim, check the NLM Catalog
Use the journal’s record in the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Catalog and inspect “Current Indexing Status.” NLM’s MEDLINE FAQ distinguishes among the NLM Catalog, MEDLINE, PubMed, and PubMed Central (PMC): an article appearing in PubMed does not by itself establish that the journal is currently indexed for MEDLINE or included in PMC, and a Catalog record alone does not establish MEDLINE inclusion. Check the exact title and ISSN, and distinguish current status from historical coverage.
NLM also states that the presence of an article or citation in its collections, including PubMed, MEDLINE, and PMC, does not constitute endorsement or promotion by NLM, NIH, or the U.S. federal government. Even a confirmed listing therefore answers a status question, not whether the journal is the right place for your manuscript.
For Web of Science, open-access, and other claims
For a Web of Science claim, search Clarivate’s Master Journal List and compare the result with the journal’s exact title and ISSN. For open-access inclusion, inspect the journal’s record in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), including the status and criteria shown there. For other indexing claims, use the named index’s own lookup system.

Directory membership and listings are useful evidence to examine, not a complete assessment of journal quality. The Think. Check. Submit. checklist recommends verifying relevant memberships or listings, including organizations such as COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, and applicable regional scholarly platforms. However, inclusion criteria and directory scope vary; a journal’s absence from any one directory does not, on its own, prove that it is predatory.

Assess transparency without relying on a single red flag
Look at the journal’s practices as a whole. DOAJ’s application guidance describes transparency expectations that include clear disclosure of fees and human oversight for automated processes used by journals. The joint Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing were developed by COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, and WAME. These are useful reference points for asking whether the journal explains how it works and who is responsible.
Investigate further if you encounter a fast-acceptance promise, aggressive solicitation, an unclear fee schedule, editors or board members whose roles cannot be verified, a false indexing claim, or a title that closely resembles a well-known journal. None of these signs should be treated as a definitive verdict without context. Check the claims and look for consistency across the journal website and independent records; do not label a specific journal predatory based on one ambiguous signal.
Think. Check. Submit.’s English-language journals checklist was last updated in March 2023, with further amendments in June 2023. It asks authors to complete the checklist and submit only if they can answer “yes” to most or all of its questions. Use it as a structured prompt to examine familiarity, scope, discoverability, publishing policies, and relevant memberships—not as a substitute for verifying current records.
Compare candidate journals on the requirements that matter
If the finder has suggested several candidates, compare them against your actual constraints rather than choosing by AI match score or impact factor alone. A short comparison sheet can make gaps visible:

| Question | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Scope and article type | Does the journal publish work with this paper’s subject, methods, and format for the intended scholarly audience? |
| Identity and governance | Do the exact title and ISSN match the publisher’s record, and can editors, board members, address, and contacts be checked? |
| Editorial practice | Is peer review described credibly, and do recent articles appear consistent with the journal’s stated standards? |
| Indexing and eligibility | Does the journal have the specific current listing required by your institution, funder, or field? |
| Costs and terms | Are submission and publication charges, licensing, copyright, and withdrawal conditions stated clearly? |
| Reach and practical fit | Are the readership, language, publication model, and likely timing appropriate for your goals? |
Mark claims as confirmed, unclear, or inconsistent and note where you checked them. If a required condition is unclear or fails verification, do not treat a strong score on unrelated dimensions as a reason to overlook it. A journal can be attractive in one respect and still fail a non-negotiable requirement.
Get an informed second opinion when evidence is mixed
If the records or policies do not resolve your concerns, send your saved evidence to a subject librarian, scholarly communications librarian, research-integrity office, or trusted senior colleague. Ask them to check the exact journal record and index status, review the relevant policies, and assess fit against your institution’s or funder’s rules. Explain which requirements are essential and include the specific claim that remains uncertain.
For a career-sensitive or regulated decision, keep a note of the checks and advice received. If the finder provider offers a feedback or correction route, you can report the recommendation with the journal identifier and supporting records; no particular provider or reporting process is assumed here. A report about the tool does not replace verifying the journal before you act.
If you have already submitted or paid
First, check the terms or agreement you accepted and contact the journal in writing so you have a record of the exchange. Ask your institution’s librarian or research-integrity office for advice promptly, especially before taking an action that could affect a submission, payment, or publication agreement.
There is no universal withdrawal, refund, or dispute remedy established for every case: the appropriate route depends on the contract, journal, payment method, and jurisdiction. If a journal demands additional money while citing an unexplained penalty, do not pay simply to make the demand go away; seek institution-specific advice and review the terms first.
A practical decision rule
Proceed only when the journal’s identity and fit are clear, material indexing claims have been checked in the relevant official records, and its editorial practices, costs, and terms are sufficiently transparent for your needs. If a key claim cannot be verified, or if the evidence conflicts, pause and ask an appropriate human adviser rather than letting the finder’s recommendation settle the question. The finder can help you discover a candidate; the decision should rest on checks you can explain and reproduce.
