How to Find Out Whether a Game Uses Generative AI

A practical, evidence-based way to check whether a game uses generative AI: read the disclosure, identify its scope, and corroborate specific claims.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the game’s own storefront disclosure, then check what it actually covers and who made the claim. On Steam, the developer’s Content Survey is the clearest starting point for AI-generated content that ships with a game and is consumed by players. A missing disclosure does not prove a game is AI-free, and a visual style that looks unusual is not reliable proof that an asset was generated.

The key is to distinguish content made with generative AI from other uses of AI in game development, and to separate assets created before release from content generated during play.

How can I tell if a game uses generative AI?

Use a simple evidence ladder: read the game’s storefront disclosure, identify exactly what use it describes, and look for a direct statement from the developer, publisher, performer, or a relevant union if the disclosure is absent or unclear. Record the date and scope of each statement. Treat anything beyond those statements as an inference, not a confirmed fact.

“AI” can refer to very different things. This guide focuses on generative AI: tools that create or help create material such as images, writing, sound, localization, or dialogue. A game may use other forms of AI—for example, systems that control enemy behavior—without generating player-facing content. A claim that a game “uses AI” is therefore incomplete unless it says what the system does.

If you are asking, “Does this game use generative AI?” the most useful answer is often narrower than yes or no. You may be able to confirm that the developer disclosed AI-assisted localization, for example, while finding no statement about artwork or dialogue generated during play. Keep the confirmed fact, the unaddressed question, and any suspicion separate. That makes the conclusion more useful than a broad label that collapses different tools and content into one category.

Step 1: Check the game’s store page

Start with the developer’s disclosure

On Steam, look for the game’s AI-generated-content disclosure and read the description itself, rather than relying on an icon, a search result, or a third-party summary. Steam’s Content Survey documentation describes the disclosure as part of the developer’s survey and Steam’s pre-release review process.

The survey is developer-provided information. It is useful evidence of what the developer says, but it is not an independent forensic audit of every asset or tool used in production. If the store page does not show a disclosure, record that as “no disclosure found,” not “no generative AI used.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you check the page, make sure you are looking at the game’s own listing rather than a publisher’s general page, a community post, or a search-engine excerpt. Read any explanatory text alongside the disclosure. The wording matters more than a shorthand badge: it may identify one category of content and say nothing about others. If you are documenting your finding, save the page address and the date you checked it so readers can understand what version of the listing your statement refers to.

Steam says its Content Survey helps customers understand product content and forms part of its pre-release review process. That does not turn a disclosure into a guarantee that every possible production use has been independently checked. It tells you what the developer reported within the survey’s scope and what Steam says it reviews before release. Keep those separate when describing what the listing proves.

Read the exact wording

Look for the content named, when it is created, and whether the statement describes material that appears in the released game. A disclosure may be limited to one type of asset or one feature. For instance, a statement about generated dialogue does not establish that the game’s artwork was generated, and a statement about artwork does not tell you whether the game generates new content while running.

Also check whether the statement is about the game itself, its store-page presentation, community material, or marketing. Those are different scopes. A claim about an image used to promote the game is not, by itself, a claim that generated images appear in the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask yourself what a reader could reasonably conclude from the exact sentence. Does it say AI tools helped make a shipped asset, or only that the studio uses such tools? Does it name a specific feature, or make a broad statement about production? Does it identify content a player encounters, or refer to work that is not part of the game? Do not silently expand a limited statement into a claim about the whole title.

Step 2: Identify when and how the content is generated

Steam’s current guidance separates two kinds of AI-generated content in its Content Survey. The distinction matters because a fixed asset created during development raises different questions from a system that produces new material during a session.

Type When it is created What to look for
Pre-generated content During development, before players encounter it in the released game. AI-assisted artwork, sound, narrative, or localization that ships with the game and is consumed by players.
Live-generated content While the game is running. Content produced during play, such as generated dialogue or other generated output. Steam asks developers to describe guardrails intended to prevent illegal output.
General workflow assistance During development, but not necessarily as player-consumed generated content. Tools used for general efficiency gains. Steam’s current guidance says these are not the focus of this disclosure section.

These categories help you describe a claim precisely. “The game uses AI” could mean shipped images created with an AI tool, dialogue generated in real time, or software used behind the scenes to speed up work. Those are not interchangeable descriptions.

For pre-generated material, the practical question is whether the AI-assisted output is part of the released game and consumed by players. The relevant examples in Steam’s guidance include artwork, sound, narrative, and localization. A developer’s claim about one of those does not automatically cover all the others. If you are trying to establish what players encounter, note the named content type and avoid implying that the whole game—or every version of it—was made with generative AI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Live generation raises an additional question: what can the system produce during a session, and what guardrails does the developer describe to prevent illegal output? Steam asks developers to describe those guardrails for live-generated content. If a listing identifies live generation but does not provide detail that answers a question you care about, say that the disclosure does not answer it; do not guess what protections are in place.

Efficiency tools are a separate case. A studio may use AI tools to speed up general development work, but Steam’s current guidance says “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” That sentence is about the scope of Steam’s disclosure section, not a claim that every such use is or is not disclosed elsewhere. If a developer discusses workflow assistance, report it as workflow assistance unless the statement also identifies player-consumed generated content.

Step 3: Check the scope and date of the claim

Store disclosures and policies can change. Note when you checked the page and, if available, when the developer made the statement. A disclosure captured at launch may not describe a later update; a current store page may also differ from an older announcement or screenshot.

Steam’s live documentation is the best source here for what its current survey says it covers. In January 2026, GamesRadar+ reported on a wording change that narrowed the focus toward content shipped with a game and consumed by players, drawing on Simon Carless’s observation of Steam’s backend. That reporting helps explain why older descriptions may not match the current scope, but Steam’s own documentation should take priority when describing today’s guidance. See the January 20, 2026 report for the reported history.

Keep separate notes for separate claims. A platform disclosure, a developer interview, and a news report may refer to different versions, content types, or time periods. Don’t combine them into a broader assertion unless they actually support it.

Scope is especially important when someone points to a store image or community material as evidence. The current Steamworks survey guidance focuses on shipped content consumed by players. GamesRadar+’s January 2026 account describes an earlier question as expressly including store and community material. Because the wording and scope have changed, identify which version of a policy or statement you are discussing instead of treating an old screenshot as a description of current guidance.

A useful note-taking format is: source; speaker or organization; date; game or version identified; content type; whether it is pre-generated or live-generated; and the source’s exact claim. If one detail is missing, mark it as unknown. That simple record helps prevent a statement about one build, one feature, or one date from being repeated as a universal claim about the game.

Step 4: Corroborate claims that matter

Prefer attributable statements

If the store page is silent or vague, look for an official production note, a named developer or publisher statement, or a relevant performer or union statement. Prefer material that identifies the game and the specific use. An anonymous post or a screenshot without provenance may be a lead, but it is weak evidence on its own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When evaluating a source, ask four questions:

  • Who is speaking? A developer or publisher can speak to its production choices; a platform explains its disclosure rules; a performer or union may address a covered voice or likeness agreement; a journalist may report or contextualize a claim.
  • What content is covered? Is the claim about in-game art, writing, localization, sound, live-generated dialogue, marketing material, or workflow tools?
  • When was it made? Does it refer to the current release, an earlier build, or a policy that has since changed?
  • Is it direct or inferred? A named statement is different from a conclusion drawn from an image or a rumor.

Corroboration means checking whether a second attributable source supports the same specific point—not merely finding another page that repeats a headline. If a news story reports a developer’s statement, trace the claim back to the named statement where possible and note what the report adds. If two accounts differ, compare their dates and scopes before deciding that one contradicts the other. They may be discussing different content or different versions of the game.

For a claim that has consequences for a player or performer, use a higher bar than for a casual observation. A source that establishes an AI-assisted art asset does not establish that a performer’s voice was replicated. A statement about consent or a contract does not necessarily establish the details of every feature in the game. Match the evidence to the question being answered.

For performer voice or likeness claims

Claims that a game uses an AI version of a performer’s voice or likeness need particular care. SAG-AFTRA’s 2025 Interactive Media Video Game Agreement, approved July 9, 2025, includes consent and disclosure requirements for AI digital replica use in covered work. Its FAQ says employers must provide a reasonably specific description of intended use, with details such as the project code name, genre, role, and whether the character will be used for real-time generated dialogue. The agreement also calls for usage reports intended to help identify possible employer non-compliance.

Those provisions are not a universal label for every game or every AI-generated voice. Their scope is the agreement’s covered work; they should not be generalized to non-union performers, all games, or every voice-generation feature. For a specific claim, look for statements by the relevant performer, publisher, or union and make clear what the source does—and does not—establish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The agreement and FAQ are most useful when the question concerns covered work and a performer’s digital replica. They describe information and reporting obligations in that context; they do not provide a general database that identifies every game with generated voices. If the source you find concerns a performer but does not identify the project, role, or intended use, do not fill in those missing details yourself. State what it confirms and what remains unanswered.

What counts as strong evidence?

Use the evidence to support only the claim it actually makes. This comparison can help keep a finding appropriately narrow.

Evidence What it can support What it does not establish by itself
A Steam AI-generated-content disclosure What the developer reported in the survey, within the wording and scope shown. That every possible use was independently verified, or that no undisclosed use exists.
A named developer or publisher statement The specific production use described by that organization. Uses or content types the statement does not address.
A performer or union statement Information about the relevant performer, agreement, consent, or covered digital-replica use. A general conclusion about every voice or AI feature in the game.
A news report The reported facts and context, particularly where it attributes observations or quotes a named source. More than the report’s evidence and stated scope support.
Visual clues or anonymous speculation A reason to investigate further. Reliable proof of AI provenance.

There is no need to force these sources into a single ranking that works for every question. The platform is the direct authority on what its survey asks; a developer is the relevant source for its stated production process; a performer or union can speak to covered agreement terms; and a journalist can provide reporting and context. The right source depends on the claim. A strong conclusion may combine sources, but it should still say which source supports which part.

When no source answers the question, the honest result is an unresolved one. The fact that a game has a disclosure does not mean every detail is public, and the fact that you cannot find a statement does not establish the opposite. You can report the limit plainly: “The store disclosure identifies pre-generated artwork; I found no attributable statement about live-generated dialogue.”

Why visual clues are not enough

Inconsistent details, unusual textures, or an image that resembles common AI-generated work may prompt a question, but style alone cannot establish how an asset was made. A human-created asset can look synthetic; an AI-assisted asset can be edited or integrated so that its origin is not obvious. Without an attributable disclosure or corroborating statement, describe the observation as a suspicion and label it unconfirmed.

Likewise, a missing store label does not prove the absence of generative AI. The available platform materials do not establish universal, exhaustive reporting across storefronts. Steam also says its content rules apply whether or not the survey discloses material: “Products on Steam must adhere to the content rules, regardless of whether it is disclosed in these surveys.” That is a statement about content rules, not a guarantee that every use will be disclosed.

These cautions work in both directions. A detail that looks unusual is not proof of generation, and a polished asset is not proof that no AI tool was involved. A visual impression can tell you what to investigate, but it cannot reliably identify the production history of an image, sound, or line of writing. Treat visual analysis as a lead, then look for an attributable statement that addresses the particular asset or feature.

A practical checklist for checking one game

  1. Open the game’s official store page. On Steam, locate the AI-generated-content disclosure and read its text.
  2. Write down the claim narrowly. Note whether it concerns pre-generated or live-generated content, which content type it names, and whether it refers to material players encounter in the game.
  3. Separate adjacent uses. Don’t treat a statement about marketing, community content, or development efficiency as proof about shipped in-game content.
  4. Record the date and version context. Note when you checked the page and whether a statement refers to launch, a later update, or a particular build.
  5. Seek an attributable source if needed. Check official production notes or named developer, publisher, performer, or union statements that address the specific claim.
  6. State the evidence level in your conclusion. Use wording such as “the developer disclosed,” “the publisher said,” or “I found no disclosure,” rather than presenting an inference as confirmed fact.

Before sharing a finding, check that the subject and evidence line up: the same game, relevant version, relevant content type, and a source with a clear date. If the wording is broad or ambiguous, quote the exact sentence or summarize it conservatively. If a source only supports a partial answer, preserve that boundary instead of completing the story with a guess.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This process is useful whether you are deciding what to buy, checking a claim in a discussion, or writing about a game. The outcome does not have to be a verdict. “The developer disclosed AI-assisted localization, but its statement does not address live generation” is a complete and informative finding when that is all the evidence supports.

How to report what you found accurately

A concise, reliable finding should name the game and platform, identify the source and date, quote or summarize the disclosure’s actual scope, and distinguish confirmed information from unanswered questions. For example, if a developer discloses AI-assisted localization but says nothing about images or dialogue generated during play, report the localization disclosure and say those other uses are not established by that statement.

Avoid broad labels such as “AI-made game” unless a source supports that exact scope. More precise language—“the developer disclosed pre-generated AI-assisted artwork” or “the store page has no disclosure I could find”—helps readers understand both what is known and where the evidence stops.

When summarizing a policy, identify whose policy it is and when you checked it. Steam’s current Content Survey documentation is the relevant source for its current disclosure guidance; a January 20, 2026 GamesRadar+ report can provide context about the reported wording change. For performer-related claims, name the 2025 SAG-AFTRA agreement and its limited coverage rather than implying that its requirements apply to all games. Attribution makes it easier for readers to distinguish a platform rule, a company statement, a reported observation, and your own inference.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Steam disclosure mean the game was independently verified to use AI?

It means the developer reported information in Steam’s Content Survey, within the wording and scope shown. Steam describes the survey as part of its pre-release review process, but the disclosure is not an independent forensic audit of every asset or tool. Quote or summarize what the developer disclosed rather than claiming that every possible use has been verified.

If there is no AI disclosure, does that mean the game does not use generative AI?

No. Record that you found no disclosure on the page you checked. Steam’s content rules apply whether or not material is disclosed in the survey, and the verified materials do not establish exhaustive reporting across every storefront. An absent label is not proof of no use.

Does a game use generative AI if its enemies behave intelligently?

Not necessarily. “AI” can describe systems that control enemy behavior, which is different from generative AI that creates or helps create images, writing, sound, localization, or dialogue. Ask what the system does before describing the game as using generative AI.

Can I tell from an image or a voice whether it was AI-generated?

Visual style alone cannot establish an asset’s provenance, and an impression is not conclusive evidence about how an image was made. For a voice or likeness claim, look for an attributable statement from the relevant performer, publisher, or union and be careful about whether any agreement cited covers the work. Treat clues as a reason to investigate, not as proof.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between pre-generated and live-generated content?

Pre-generated content is made with AI tools during development and ships with the game for players to consume. Live-generated content is created while the game is running. Steam’s guidance names artwork, sound, narrative, and localization as examples of pre-generated content and asks developers describing live-generated use to explain guardrails intended to prevent illegal output.

Does Steam’s disclosure cover AI used for development efficiency?

Steam’s current guidance says general efficiency gains from AI tools are not the focus of this disclosure section. That is distinct from a disclosure about AI-assisted content that ships with the game and is consumed by players. Report a workflow statement as workflow assistance unless it also identifies player-facing generated content.

Do SAG-AFTRA’s AI replica rules apply to every game voice?

No. SAG-AFTRA’s 2025 Interactive Media Video Game Agreement includes consent and disclosure requirements for AI digital replica use in covered work. Its FAQ describes intended-use details and usage reports in that agreement’s context. Do not generalize those provisions to every game, non-union performer, or AI-generated voice feature.

Should store-page art or community content count as proof that the game itself uses AI?

Not on its own. Store presentation, community material, marketing, and shipped in-game content are different scopes. Steam’s current survey guidance focuses on content shipped with the game and consumed by players; GamesRadar+ reported in January 2026 that an earlier version of the question expressly included store and community material. Identify the date and wording you are relying on, and do not treat a promotional asset as proof about in-game content.

The Bottom Line

To find out whether a game uses generative AI, read its storefront disclosure, identify the content and timing it actually covers, and corroborate important claims with attributable statements. Record the source and date, distinguish shipped assets from live generation and workflow tools, and treat missing labels or visual clues as inconclusive—not proof.
