If an AI detector flags your writing, treat the result as a signal to review—not proof that you used AI. Save the work and any authentic records of how you created it, read the notice and your institution’s policy, then ask for a human review that considers the writing and its development alongside the detector result. Follow the specific response instructions and deadlines in your notice; they vary by institution.
What an AI detector score does—and does not—show
A detector estimates whether text may have been generated or altered by AI. It does not establish who wrote a particular submission or prove misconduct. Turnitin says its model may misidentify human-written, AI-generated, and AI-paraphrased text, and that its result should not be the sole basis for adverse action against a student. Turnitin’s AI Writing Report guide describes the result as one signal for educators to consider, not a definitive answer.

A score is not the probability that your submission was written by AI. Australia’s Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) warns that a score alone is insufficient evidence for an allegation. Its example of a hypothetical 1% false-positive rate illustrates why even a low rate could flag a student in a group where nobody used AI; it is not a measured rate for any particular detector. TEQSA’s academic-integrity toolkit also advises caution with short, mixed, or edited text.

For Turnitin specifically, its current guide says the percentage refers to qualifying prose that its model determines could be AI-generated or AI-generated and modified using a paraphraser or bypasser. Qualifying text means prose sentences in long-form writing. The product requires at least 300 words of long-form prose to generate an AI Writing Report. Turnitin says it suppresses scores and highlights for results above 0% but below 20% to reduce possible false-positive misinterpretation; that display threshold is not an accuracy boundary and does not apply to other detectors. Reports generated before July 8, 2024 may still show a numerical score below 20%.

Detector limitations are not unique to one product. OpenAI says its own research did not find detectors reliable enough for decisions with lasting consequences. It reports that its attempted detector labelled human-written examples, including Shakespeare and the Declaration of Independence, as AI-generated, and notes indications of disproportionate impacts on English learners and formulaic or concise writing. Those are OpenAI’s statements about its research, not a universal performance measurement for every detector. OpenAI’s guidance for educators discusses these limitations.
What to do after receiving a flag
- Preserve what already exists. Save the submitted version and gather authentic materials from the process: drafts, outlines, notes, source records, and available cloud document version history. Keep records as they are; do not create or alter evidence after receiving the allegation. TEQSA notes that verifiable version history can show how work was compiled, and Washington University in St. Louis lists drafts, notes, outlines, and version history as material that may be discussed. These records can help explain your process, but none guarantees a particular outcome.
- Read the notice and the applicable policy. Identify what rule is involved, what response is requested, who is handling the matter, and the deadline. Ask the instructor or named office what material is being relied on and what steps are available. There is no universal deadline, appeal route, or guaranteed right to a particular report; follow your institution’s procedures. Turnitin likewise directs educators to their institution’s academic-integrity and generative-AI policies.
- Request a review that considers more than the score. Calmly state that you dispute the conclusion if you did not use AI in a way that violated the rules. Ask that the reviewer consider the submission, sources, drafts, writing history, and your explanation—not a detector result alone. Washington University advises instructors not to base an academic-misconduct accusation solely on an AI detection tool.
- Explain your actual writing process. Be specific and truthful: when you worked, how your argument developed, which sources you used, and what writing, grammar, translation, or AI tools you used. If you used AI assistance, explain what it did and whether you disclosed it as required by the course policy. Washington University suggests discussing work dates, drafts, resources, and writing or translation tools.
- Keep communication and meet the stated deadlines. When practical, reply in writing, retain copies of messages and documents, and use the process named in the notice. If the matter could have serious consequences, possible sources of support include an academic adviser, student union, or ombuds office, where available. These options depend on your institution; they are not a universal appeal right.
How to explain your work without overstating the evidence
Organize your explanation around material that already exists and facts you can describe accurately. A concise account can connect your process to the submitted work: how the question led to your argument, how your sources informed particular points, and how your drafts changed along the way. Offer relevant records through the institution’s process rather than sending confidential material to an unrelated service.

Do not present a detector’s score as a probability, or claim that a draft history conclusively proves authorship. TEQSA advises reviewers to consider evidence that could disconfirm AI use as well as evidence that might confirm it. The useful request is for a fair assessment of the whole context, including evidence that does not fit the detector’s conclusion.
What not to do
- Do not try to “beat” the detector. Adding mistakes or rewriting work that is already yours to change its style distracts from the authorship question and is not a reliable remedy.
- Do not treat another detector as a verdict. A second automated score does not establish authorship. TEQSA also cautions that unlicensed free or personal-subscription detection services may create IT, privacy, intellectual-property, or copyright problems.
- Do not ask ChatGPT to certify who wrote a passage. OpenAI says ChatGPT may invent an answer and has no reliable knowledge of whether it generated specific text. Its response is not verification.
- Do not ignore the notice while trying to resolve the score yourself. The applicable policy and the response deadline are the practical next steps.
If the flag is outside an academic setting
The same distinction applies at work, in publishing, or elsewhere: a detector result is not proof of authorship. Ask the organization how the result will be reviewed, preserve authentic records of your process, and follow its own policies. Academic procedures and student support options should not be assumed to apply in another setting.
