If your Samsung Galaxy update is stuck, first identify whether it is unavailable, still downloading, blocked by storage, installing, or preventing the phone from starting. Resume an interrupted download or clear the storage amount shown on the phone; if downloads keep failing, use Samsung Smart Switch on a Mac or Windows PC. If the phone will not boot normally after an update failure, contact Samsung service.
Identify where the update is getting stuck
Different symptoms call for different fixes. Check what the phone is actually doing before retrying:

- No update is offered: availability may depend on the device, carrier, SIM conditions, region, or rollout timing.
- Download is incomplete: resume it from the update notification.
- Insufficient storage: remove files or apps until you have freed the amount the phone specifies.
- Installation or restart is underway: allow the process to continue; the phone may restart more than once.
- The phone will not start normally after an update failure: Samsung says service is required to reflash it.
Samsung menu names vary by model and software version. Look under Settings for Software update or System updates; the action may be called Download and install or Check for updates. Samsung’s software-update troubleshooting guide describes the recovery steps for failed updates.
If the update is not available
Connect to Wi-Fi and check again. Some carriers require Wi-Fi for updates, and newly released software may arrive in waves rather than reaching every eligible phone at once. Samsung suggests checking every few hours when an update is rolling out. Carrier release timing and SIM requirements can also affect carrier-branded and carrier-unlocked phones, so an update’s availability on another Galaxy does not guarantee it is available for yours. If the download is incomplete or keeps failing
Resume a partial download
If the download did not finish, use the update notification to resume it rather than starting over from scratch.
Fix an insufficient-storage warning
Free the amount of space displayed in the warning. Remove unneeded files or apps, then try the update again.

Switch methods after repeated failures
If downloads continue to fail, move to Smart Switch instead of repeating the same unsuccessful on-device attempt. Samsung supports updating a connected Galaxy through Smart Switch on a Mac or Windows PC.

- Open Smart Switch on a Mac or Windows PC. If it is not installed, download it from Samsung’s Smart Switch support page.
- Connect the Galaxy to the computer with a USB cable. Samsung recommends trying the cable supplied with the phone, where available.
- Allow the computer to detect the phone. If an Update option appears in Smart Switch, select it.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Keep the USB cable connected and do not use the phone until the update finishes; it may restart during the process.

- Check for PC updates and restart the computer.
- Remove and reinstall Smart Switch.
- When prompted on the phone, select Transferring files / Android Auto.
- Try a different USB port or cable, or connect the phone to another computer.
Samsung notes that Verizon phones’ USB system-update mode is not compatible with Smart Switch. For more detail, follow Samsung’s Smart Switch troubleshooting steps.
If installation appears to be taking a long time
A Galaxy device may restart several times during an update. For an update through Smart Switch, keep the cable connected and do not use the phone until the process is complete. Samsung does not provide a universal timeout for a progress display that appears frozen, so there is no reliable minute-count after which every device should be forcibly powered off.

If the phone will not boot normally
If the phone cannot start normally after an update failure, Samsung says it needs service to be reflashed. Contact Samsung Support or an appropriate service center. Do not try unofficial firmware packages or consumer reflashing procedures.
