Stop the conversation if it is distressing or reinforcing the advice, and bring in a trusted person or qualified professional. If anyone may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
What to do first
- Stop and create distance. Do not act on instructions that encourage harm. End the chat if continuing is upsetting or seems to reinforce the advice.
- Tell a person. Contact someone you trust. If the advice concerns health or mental health, consult an appropriately qualified professional rather than relying on the chatbot.
- Check consequential claims with a human expert. A confident tone is not proof that an answer is accurate. The American Psychological Association (APA) warns that AI can sound confident when wrong and lacks the context and clinical judgment of a mental-health professional. Do not make a consequential decision based only on chatbot output.
The APA’s June 2026 Guide to Navigating AI-Generated Advice Thoughtfully and Safely puts the boundary plainly: “Any advice from AI that points toward harm to yourself, others, or anything living is a clear signal to step away.”

When the situation may be a crisis
Do not try to resolve an immediate crisis by debating with a chatbot or fact-checking its answer. The APA advises seeking immediate human help for thoughts of harming yourself or another person, urges to self-harm, hallucinations, or strongly distressing beliefs. It says, “Important: Do not rely on AI in a crisis.”

If the advice is troubling but there is no immediate danger
Pause before taking action, especially if the chatbot made a health or safety recommendation. Ask a suitable human professional to assess it and consult authoritative information relevant to the decision. The APA’s guidance focuses particularly on mental health, but the practical limit applies broadly: chatbot output alone is not a safe basis for consequential choices.

NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework offers broader context for why AI outputs need careful evaluation: it addresses risks such as reliability, accuracy, robustness, context, and severity across the design, development, use, and evaluation of AI systems. It is voluntary guidance, not a personal crisis-response protocol, and NIST says the framework is being revised.

If you want to flag the output and it is safe to do so, use the service’s current in-product report, feedback, or safety contact options. Reporting instructions vary by provider; there is no universal consumer complaint channel established by the sources cited here. Do not assume a report will receive a particular response or result.
Rank #3
The Federal Trade Commission’s September 2025 inquiry sought information from seven chatbot companies about safety practices, disclosures, enforcement of rules, and data handling. Seven is the number of companies that received the inquiry—not a measure of how often chatbots give dangerous advice or cause harm, and not a finding that a particular service is unsafe. The FTC’s announcement describes an inquiry into company practices, not a reporting route for users.
Protect your privacy while getting help
When you contact a trusted person, professional, or provider, share only the information needed to explain the concern. The APA notes that chatbot providers may store or share personal information, including conversation data. If you save or submit an exchange, consider removing sensitive personal details that are not necessary to understand the safety issue.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The sources cited here do not establish how often dangerous chatbot advice occurs. The FTC’s inquiry count is not a prevalence statistic, and its inquiry does not establish that any specific chatbot is unsafe. WHO/Europe’s operational toolkit for managing dangerous health narratives in emergencies addresses institutional work such as social listening, coordination, and risk communication; it is not personal medical advice or a chatbot-specific complaint channel.
