Then check whether it may have come from saved memory or chat history, a public webpage, or work-system context such as connected files or retrieval tools. The answer alone does not establish its source—or prove a breach. Use the control or request that matches the likely source, and escalate promptly if the information includes a credential or sensitive business data.
What should you do first?
Record enough detail to make the issue understandable to the provider or your organization without spreading the information further. Before deleting a chat or changing a setting, save:

- The exact response and the date it appeared.
- The assistant or product name, and whether you were signed into a personal account or a work- or school-managed account.
- The prompt and surrounding context that may have led to the response.
- Any citations, links, or source names the assistant displayed.
Keep sensitive excerpts private. Do not post them publicly, forward them broadly, or prompt the assistant to repeat the information simply to test it. If you need to report the issue, share only what the relevant provider or security team needs to investigate.
Next, consider the type of information. An old preference or biographical detail calls for a different response from a password, access token, customer record, or confidential company document. If a credential or sensitive work information may be exposed, notify the appropriate security contact promptly; do not wait for a personal settings change to resolve a possible security incident.

Where might the old information have come from?
There is no reliable way to identify the source from a surprising answer alone. An assistant may combine information from more than one place, and its wording is not proof that it memorized training data or that another user can see the information.
Saved memory or conversation history
Some assistants use saved memories, past conversations, or personalization features to tailor later responses. A detail you shared long ago may therefore appear again even if it is no longer current. Memory and chat history are related but distinct: a saved memory may persist separately from the conversation in which you provided it. The controls and retention behavior differ by product.
Public webpages and search results
An assistant may retrieve or summarize material from a public webpage. Look for a citation, link, or named source in the answer, then inspect the page itself. The page may contain outdated, incorrect, or unwanted personal information. A missing citation does not rule out web retrieval, and a citation does not prove it was the only source.
Workplace context and connected systems
In an organization, an answer may draw on connected documents, retrieval indexes, cached content, connector output, conversation histories, or other system context. Microsoft Learn’s enterprise security article, “Sensitive Information Disclosure (Data Leak),” describes the risk this way: “Training-data memorization remains a valid concern, but for enterprise systems the more common and actionable risk is leakage from persistent memory and context plumbing: conversation histories, RAG indexes, cached embeddings, prompt traces, connector outputs, and orchestration telemetry.” In other words, a concerning answer can involve how a work tool retrieves or passes information, even if the underlying model was not trained on that material.

For a work-managed assistant, ask your organization’s IT or security team whether the tool connects to files, email, business applications, or other sources. They can check access and system context in a way an individual user generally cannot.
Which removal path fits the situation?
More than one path may be needed. A provider-side setting or request can affect what an assistant uses or returns, while the original information may remain on a webpage or in a company system.

Choose based on the likely source, the sensitivity of the information, and whether the account is personal or organization-managed. If you cannot tell, preserve the details and ask the appropriate provider or workplace team to help identify the source rather than assuming one.

How do you ask an assistant to forget personal information?
Start with the product’s memory and history controls if the issue appears to involve personalization in your own account. Read the control description before using it: deleting a chat, deleting a saved memory, changing personalization, and changing data-use preferences may have different effects.

Microsoft Copilot personal accounts
Microsoft Support’s published personal Copilot instructions describe asking Copilot, “What do you know about me?”, asking it to forget a specific memory, deleting all memory, and then asking again to check the result. The page carried an August 18, 2026 notice that its app instructions apply to an older version. Treat those as examples of the available actions, not guaranteed current click-by-click directions; confirm the current controls in your app. Microsoft also says the cited personal-account instructions do not apply to Microsoft 365 Copilot used with a work or school account. For that environment, contact your organization’s administrator or security team.
ChatGPT and other personal assistants
In ChatGPT, review memory, chat-history, personalization, and data-use settings separately rather than assuming one setting controls them all. OpenAI’s consumer guidance describes distinct data controls, and deleting a chat should not be described as deleting the original source everywhere. If your concern is that personal information continues to appear in responses, a privacy request is a separate route from ordinary account controls.
How do you request removal from ChatGPT responses?
OpenAI Help Center guidance says a person can submit a “Remove my personal data from ChatGPT responses” request through the Privacy Portal. The request is for review of personal information appearing in ChatGPT responses; it is not a guaranteed deletion mechanism for every record or source.

Provide relevant source links when available and be prepared to verify your identity. Sharing the exact date and account context you recorded can also help make the report concrete.

OpenAI says requests are assessed case by case, balancing privacy interests with other interests, and may be declined where there is a lawful reason. Do not assume that submitting the form guarantees approval, a particular response time, or a specific legal outcome. Applicable rights and deadlines depend on jurisdiction and circumstances.

No. Deleting a conversation or submitting a request to an assistant provider does not remove the original material from a publisher’s site or automatically clear search-engine results. OpenAI’s Help Center puts the distinction plainly: “No. Removing your personal data from ChatGPT prevents it from appearing in ChatGPT responses but does not remove it from external websites or search engines.”
If a webpage appears to be the source, contact its publisher or site operator and ask for correction or removal. If the page has changed or disappeared but a search result still shows the old content, check the relevant search engine’s removal or outdated-content process. The FTC’s business guide also discusses search caches in the context of improperly posted information. These steps address separate copies: an assistant provider cannot necessarily change a page or cache controlled by someone else.

Treat credentials and sensitive company information as a security issue, not just a personalization problem. If a password, key, or token may have been exposed, notify the relevant security contact and change or revoke the affected credential through the organization’s approved process. Avoid placing the secret into another assistant prompt or a broad email while reporting it.
For a business, the FTC’s “Data Breach Response: A Guide for Business” recommends securing operations, assembling a response team, considering forensic support and counsel, and updating credentials if they were stolen. Microsoft’s enterprise guidance supports investigating the surrounding system context—including retrieval, memory, connector output, caches, logs, and tool outputs—rather than focusing only on model training.
The FTC guide is business-focused, not individualized consumer or legal advice. Its specific caution about not turning affected machines off before forensic experts arrive applies to incident response: do not generalize it into a personal instruction to power down devices. Follow your organization’s security team or qualified responders.
How can you reduce the chance of this happening again?
For a personal account
- Review memory and chat-history controls periodically, especially after sharing information that later becomes outdated.
- Check personalization and data-use preferences as distinct settings; turning off model training does not necessarily delete memory or conversation history.
- Use temporary or history-off options if the product offers them and they suit the task, but read what each option does rather than treating it as a universal no-retention guarantee.
- Correct or remove personal details at their original source when possible, not only in the assistant.
For an organization
Microsoft Learn recommends limiting sensitive memory artifacts, separating user and session contexts, applying access controls and retention limits, and scanning prompts, outputs, and memory writes. Organizations should also review connected sources and their permissions, define approved-tool policies, and establish a route for employees to report unexpected disclosures. Those controls address context and access pathways as well as the assistant’s visible responses.
The FTC’s January 2024 commentary, “AI Companies: Uphold Your Privacy and Confidentiality Commitments,” underscores that people may disclose sensitive information to AI services and that companies should honor privacy and confidentiality commitments. For users, the practical implication is to avoid sharing information that is not needed for a task, particularly credentials, private records, or confidential business material.
What an old answer does—and does not—tell you
An outdated detail is a reason to investigate its source and adjust the relevant controls. By itself, it does not show that the model learned the detail during training, that the information was exposed to another user, or that a security breach occurred. Conversely, in a workplace setting, the absence of evidence about training does not rule out leakage through connected files, retrieval, memory, or other context systems. Preserve the facts, use the route suited to the source, and escalate sensitive exposure through the right security channel.
